stayed at amarilia for four days with my wife and 12 year old after a week in the islands

it's close enough to see athens (30 euros in a taxi) but on the beach. best beach is the one in fromt of the astir palace hotel- you need to pay to go on but it's excellent

the beach in front of the hotel is good too and the restaurants on this beach offer decent food with great views. compare prices though because one of them is mega expensive!

hotel clean, staff helpful and rooms have great views (speak to them direct to get a high floor as these have best views). breakfast pretty good but no food is available in the hotel in the day or evening so make sure you plan accordingly

there are no shops nearby- nearest one in vouliagmeni a short cab ride away but there is a fridge

pool is ok although it's tucked away round the back and sun goes at 4pm. no real pool atmosphere either but the beach is only 50 metres walk away anyway

new airport (which is very impressive) 30 euros cab ride away

only negative for me was that we kept the room until 6pm and they insisted on charging us half the day rate which i thought was a bit cynical given that they were half empty

all in all a decent place to stay. we found it by googling their website and got the rate down by a bit of haggling. it's not a hotel for a week or two week stay but if fine for chilling out

  • Liked — location and view from room
  • Disliked — being charged half day rate for late check out

Dear Sirs,

I recently stayed at this hotel and found it to be an extremely
pleasant experience all round. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the owners and staff were always helpful and went that extra mile to make my stay enjoyable.

The hotel was in a great location close to the beach and taverna's and the room rate was very reasonable.

I will return and can recommend this place
very highly.

Kind regards,
Don Soutar, Florida

We (2 adults, 2 kids, aged 9&11) stayed six days in Amarilia at mid of June. We chose the hotel as the website description and pics looked promising for us. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite (+EUR 300,-/night) that was worn out and incredibly small; I have seen bigger bathrooms in 1 star hotels. The air conditioning was also repaired 3 times during the week.

When checking in on Monday evening the problems started: According to the hotel homepage there are 2 restaurants and a poolside tavern. So we asked where can we have dinner? Answer was appalling: all the restaurants are closed as the hotel is not fully booked and it is still low season! Incredible - is it customers fault that they have been unable to attract more visitors? During the week however, they had 3 "private functions" like weddings etc and then the restaurants provided food, but not for the hotel guests...

Same explanation went for the poolside tavern: only toast available as hotel is not fully booked. Also hotel guests were forced to leave the pool as another private party had dinner there.

If you wonder why the pics of the pool are hard to find, the reason is that it is pathectically small - 3x10 meters with 8(!) sunbeds available.

Amarilia claims to have 4 star rating, I'd give them max 2. It is easy to compare as next door is the true 5 star Divani Apollon where we went for lunch several times (appr. EUR 100,-/each time, but great service and food). You can also use the large pool area of Divani but it costs you EUR 35,-/person on weekdays and EUR 50,- on weekends, so not cheap.

Hotel staff at Amarilia was helpful (specially the lady) and clearly embarrassed by their management policy. The owner of the hotel stayed in the hotel every day but never greeted customers or talked to them.

Hotel's location is somewhat problematic, in the neighbourhood there are only 2-3 very expensive fish taverns, nothing else. No supermarkets or other facilities.

All in all, avoid this hotel, specially if travelling with kids.

I returned to Athens for a business trip and stayed at Amarilia's again as I was very satisifed from my previous stay. Things got even better! I was hosted in a newly renovated room at 6th flloor, with corian bathrooms and LCD TV screen and great sea view from the balcony. There is free wireless high speed internet access in all hotel areas, the staff is friendly, quick service, relaxing atmosphere, very helpful staff at the front desk
The hotel is located in Vouliagmeni which is one of the nicest areas of Athens (green, by the sea and -easy access to the airport and downtown Athens)
GO THERE if you happen to be in Athens.
