“Good atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2010

This hotel has a great atmosphere, the staff is warm and dependable. Yet I was checked into a smoking room without asking me, until I asked to switch rooms, and then I found my room had a stuffed sink. I also wish the internet would be free and not 15 Euros a day, or at least in the lobby, and that the little modest gym were not 12 Euros a visit, and the the business center didn't charge 0.50 Euros for each printed page. On the other hand, the hotel has a beautiful rooftop pool, sunny and full of views (the Acropolis right in front of you!), pleasant area and great way to relax. I found my self going up to the pool just to open my lungs at least three times a day! Couldn't resist the temptation.

Not a bad hotel, but not a five star and overpriced compared to analogous competitors in Athens. The good. The hotel is within walking distance to several restaurants, the service is friendly, the rooms comfortable, but at the prices of this hotel you would expect nothing less. The bad. The hotel is quite expensive for what it does offer. Some examples. Internet will cost you 15 euros a day but consider that there is no wireless access at least in my room (it's incredible to charge the internet so high without offering an wireless access in the year 2010 ). It is the only place in the world that I paid 12.00 euros for a small bottle of Coke and 7 euros for a 125 ml Perrier bottle from the minibar. Guests are allowed to use the swimming pool but had to pay an unjustifiable extra 12 euros for the fitness and wellness center! In brief I believe that there are better options for the same price in Athens.

I was originally going to title this review 'only go to this hotel if someone else is paying', but the message is the same. Is the Divani 5*? Well it meets all the technical requirements, and has its 'Leading Hotels of the World' plaque clearly in view, but the Divani lives and operates in a parallel universe where money is not an issue and where is it a privilege for the customer rather than the hotel. Compare the Caravel and the Grande Bretagne or George II and you will see what 5* should really mean, ie not just that you have the biggest chandelier in Greece.

If you stay at the Divani, no matter what deal you have found on the internet, you will have a sizeable bill at the end. Breakfast costs an eye--watering 29 euros, unjustifiable even if it were in Paris. The pool, thank goodness, is free and one of the highlights of the hotel, but internet will cost you 15 euros a day, the health club ('open to guests'), a mere 12 euros per entry (not even per day), a small beer will knock you back 9 euros and a small kit-kat from the minibar 6.50 euros.

I don't mind price when I feel I am getting something for it (eg in the hotels mentioned above), but this is Balkan-style 5* brashness. What irritated me most was that the hotel clearly did not care if few people took breakfast or used the health club. There was no sense of moderating a stance to reflect today's reality. The Divani is blind to today's market forces.

Of course service was friendly, the rooms quiet and comfortable, but at these prices you would expect nothing less.

You should also be wary about location. The hotel is billed as 'central'. This is not in itself dishonest, but it is a 20 minute walk to Syntagma (not recommended in summer), and another ten to the Acropolis. There are better more central hotels for the same price or less. The Divani is, however, less than 10 minutes from the airport metro.

I left the Divani disappointed by its attitude rather than by what it had to offer. I will not go back to the Divani group again unless it adjusts this - but I am not hopeful

high quality - impressive rooms and excellent service. Prices for food and drinks are high and fitness room is at an extra charge, which I do not understand for this kind of hotel. Location is interesting, 15min by food to the city center.

Staff does everything to make you feel at home. Very friendly

First - the Not So Good New. Some search engines indicate that this hotel is in the Athens City Center, near the Plaka. It is NOT! Please double check a map, it is approx. 1-2 miles away.

Now for the Good News. This is a Beautiful Hotel, 1st Class all the way. This is definitely at least a 4 Star (plus) Hotel. From the minute we walked in and saw the Huge marble floored reception area to the rooftop view of Athens, to the business class people and socialites coming in and out, you knew this was a classy hotel.

The rooms were a comfortable size, by European standards, they were clean, well cooled by the air-conditioning, nice evening turn-down service, and maid service everyday. The reception staff usually had 2 or 3 knowledgeable and well trained staff members on duty and gave good directions and were helpful when we needed a pharmacy late one night. The train station was about a 7-10 minute walk from the Hotel and we usually went only 1 or 2 stops to get to the Plaka.

We found not only the staff in Athens to be very helpful, but also the entire city. The people are very kind and trusting, and were always willing to help us get around.

We absolutely loved Athens, from the city to the people, to the food (with reasonable prices). The Acropolis and the Parthenon is a must see for everyone once in their life!

Conveniently located hotel in the centre of Athens but slightly away from the noise and bustle. Rooftop pool with views over Acropolis, St Lycabettus etc. Great service. Worth staying on the Executive Floor for the very friendly and helpful ladies manning the desk on that floor. Only downside is that the food provided in the restaurants is not very good at all but there are plenty of good places to eat nearby.

The hotel was conveniently located to the subway, which is easy to use. Also near great shopping behind in the less posh area and across to Kolonaki. We were on the executive level, which meant that we had a woman there to help us as if she were a front desk right on our floor. The view out of our room was the Parthenon, which is lit beautifully at night. The best part was the toiletries - heavenly Bulgari Green Tea soaps and shampoos. The smell is awesome. Usually I save the soap to send to Clean the World (www.cleantheworld.org - this is the best thing going in the world of hotels. They collect the bars of soap and toiletries that guests use and don't finish, and sterilize and re-form them to send to impoverished countries. Since handwashing can prevent the spread of disease rampant in these countries, they're doing a great thing. Also prevents the horrendous waste of all the used soap and shampoo going to landfills, which is what happens if a hotel isn't signed up with Clean the World!). From this hotel, I hoarded the fragrant toiletries for myself!

Health club was good, but an extra charge. Also doesn't open early on weekends. Pool is attractive but we didn't go in.

Lovely breakfast buffet.
