I spent six nights at the Elektra Palace in September, 2005. The hotel is in the best location in Athens. The hotel is the only high-end hotel in the historic and charming Plaka district with lots of shops for tourists and restaurants. The hotel is walking distance to the flea market, the Acropolis, the Zappion building, and the downtown area near Syntagma Square. The Elektra Palace is modern, which is a contrast to the old neighborhood that it is in with narrow winding streets. The hotel has a very large lobby with authentic Greek designs that was empty most of the time I was there. I requested a room in the back of the hotel to avoid street noise from the many motorcycles that fill the streets of Athens. I was in Room 301 and I never heard a single noise from the street. The room was small by American standards, but adequate. The room contained a large safe that could hold a large laptop computer. The television showed CNN-Europe and many other stations in Greek and German. The only thing about the room that I really disliked was the shower, which was very small. The air conditioning system was just barely adequate. The hotel has wireless internet which can be accessed by purchasing a fresh 24-hour card from the hotel front desk every day for access. The service was spotty in my room and I was kicked off the internet and had to log back on many times. There are two computer terminals in the lobby that are hard-wired to the internet and they operate with the same fee access cards and those computers never kicked me off. The breakfast buffet that came with the room was excellent. I recommend the yogurt with honey, and the fresh squeezed OJ that came from a special juice squeezing machine filled with oranges - that's fresh! Everyone on the staff was extremely friendly. Taxi cabs do not routinely wait at this hotel, so it is necessary to arrange in advance for a pickup and it would take at least 15 minutes for a cab to be summoned by the bellman - longer during rain. I walked about five short blocks to "Daphne" one evening, and this is a great and expensive restaurant with outdoor eating in a backyard of a converted house. Get very precise directions how to get there because the restaurant is totally unmarked when you arrive. On my last day, I had planned several quick stops before going to the airport. I was planning to return to the hotel as my last stop to get my luggage before going to the airport. The bellman assured me that my luggage would be safe in the cab even if I were to get out at several stops and have the driver wait for me at each stop. That way, I would not have to return to the hotel for my luggage, and then I would have more time at all my other stops. He was right - I loaded up my luggage into the cab and then made the rounds - my driver waited for me at each stop and then drove me to the airport. I loved Athens, and I felt very much at home at the Elektra Palace.
