Athens was the last stop on an almost three week Greece adventure with friends. We were lucky enough to book and pay for the rooms on Expedia last summer when the dollar was a little stronger. That made a huge difference as The Electra Palace was our most expensive hotel of the trip.

You couldn't have asked for a better location. Because it is a quick walk from Syntagma Square we were able to further optimize our travel dollar by taking the metro and the airport bus instead of cabs.

The breakfast buffet was very very good. Complete with a fresh orange juice machine. The service was very friendly and my husband has hair down to his waist and looks like a member of ZZ Top...and sometimes causes strange stares. But surprisingly, not there.

The rooftop patio overlooking the Acropolis was an added plus. Every night we bought our own wine and appetizers and watched the sunset.

My only real complaint is that they charged over 6 euro per half hour to use the internet...wireless and their own. It should be FREE! Every other place we stayed at was.

All in all I was really happy there. If you can afford it with the state of our dollar, I suggest it!

  • Liked — Location and breakfast
  • Disliked — Ripoff internet charge...It should be FREE!

Wonderful hotel. North American standards. Beautiful hardwood floors. Had an Acropolis view -- breathtaking. Staff was excellent. We came back after visiting the islands and they upgraded us to a suite, complimentary. Can't say enough about this gorgeous hotel.

The Electra Palace has everything you can want from a European Hotel - the service is very good, the hotel is immaculate (great lobby design) and the room is reasonable in size considering the good sized balcony. Request an acropolis view and don't settle until you get it! It's magical sitting on the balcony listening to the sounds of the city and being amazed every day at the view of the acropolis. I'd recommend dinner at the restaurant (not the poolside cafe). The view is superb, our server was phenomenal and the food is very good. The halva, if you haven't had it before, is worth a try. Breakfast is so-so, but worth it if you are going on a day long excursion because lunch is usually later in the day.

  • Liked — The view of the acropolis
  • Disliked — The thin walls, I could hear the entire phone conversation of the next door occupant

This hotel is in an excellent position for visiting the ancient sites and Plaka but perhaps our expectations were too high or we had not read the reviews carefully enough because we felt it was a disappointing three night stay.

We should have insisted on a room high in the building and not accepted one midway (room 312 with balcony and Acropolis view) as the road noise was excessive until the small hours. The garbage was collected just before midnight and on two mornings we were awoken at half past six by cement lorries negotiating the narrow road. The window glazing in this five star hotel was not effective and being close to the elevator shafts the room was also inflicted with continuous surging and rattling during most of the day and night. . Perhaps in the summer the air conditioning fan would mask this noise. Plumbing was also a problem which meant showers were the only option as drainage from the bath was very slow. If we tried to increase the flow the bathroom floor flooded through a floor drain. When we reported this fault we were told it was of our own making. The hotel is next to a school so a visit during school holidays is advisable as the children arrive early and make a great din.

The roof top bar had not yet opened during our stay but the restaurant was and had fantastic rear views over the Acropolis. Breakfast was good but not exceptional (hot food was at best tepid). We also noticed that the form of dress of guests was varied – from flip flops and shorts to smart suits. As someone else commented this hotel is more four star than five.
