I recently stayed at the Philippos Hotel in Athens, which was the first stop of my 10 night trip to Greece. Overall, I had a good experience. On the positive side, there was a free continental breakfast every morning. Even though the choices were limited, the meal was free. There was internet service available in the lobby of the hotel at a charge. I believe the rate was either 2 or 2.5 euro per 30 minutes. The room itself was comfortable, nothing fancy. The bed was adequate. As with all the hotels I stayed at in Greece, the bed contained a single mattress on a wooden frame. It was a far cry from the Sealy Posturepedic pillow top mattreses I'm accustomed to sleeping on at home and at most major U.S. hotels, but again was adequate. The bathroom was small, but functional. The shower was also adequate. It contained a hand held type of shower device that had to be placed in a holder. The room contained a small refrigerator, that was full of for sale drinks and snacks. Unfortunately, there was no room for me to place my own bottled water and snacks in the refrigerator. The hotel had two big positives. First, the room had a large private balcony with a view of the Acropolis. It was wonderful to sit outside at night with a cold beer on a hot night and look up at the well-lit monument. The other big plus was the location of the hotel. It was located in a nice, quiet middle class neighborhood near the Plaka. I actually walked from the Acropolis back to the hotel in a short time. Also, the closest metro stop, the Acropolis station, was nearby (about a 5 - 10 minute walk). By the way, Athens has an awesome subway system. It will get you about anywhere in the city. I had two negatives about the hotel that I want to share. First, during our 3 night stay we came across 3 or 4 ants in the room. Second, and most significant, was the quality of service in the hotel. I would best describe the service as efficient, but not friendly. I can not recall receiving even one smile or greeting during my stay at the hotel. I can understand that this is not a 5 star hotel. However, a little courtesy can really go a long way. As a customer service trainer, this had a real impact on my experience and on my future plans to stay at this hotel. After travelling halfway around the world to stay at this property, a smile would have really been appreciated when I arrived at the hotel. Overall, I had a good experience at the hotel and would recommend it to anyone who is more concerned with location than with the quality of service.
