“Some rooms are better than others”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2009

I stayed at this hotel over 2 nights at the beginning and end of a trip to the Greek Islands with my girlfriend.

The first visit was incredibly disappointing. We were given a room on the second floor which just had two single beds pushed together and the room decor was like something from a cheap motel. Incredibly dated with no sense of style.

For an expensive hotel it was extremely shabby.

I was going to change my hotel for the return trip because i was so disappointed, but never managed to.

On my return visit i made sure to ask for a room with a proper double bed for me and my partner. This time our room on the third floor was a vast improvement. It was like a different hotel. A massive king size bed, new decor and bathroom, with a balcony overlooking the street.

Much more befitting of the price tag.

It's a great location, but really is a complete gamble whether you get a good room or a shabby one.

The major thing going for it is the nice roof deck where you can have a drink and see the Acropolis.

And also, a common gripe for expensive hotels - you have to pay for internet and can't do it from the room. You have to get a card from the lobby.

We were upgraded to this Hotel prior to our arrival having been booked for a quad room in the nearby sister hotel Phillipos. We we placed in a low floor quad room which was most comfortable. The two single rollaway beds were most comfortable with good mattresses and were separated by a sliding door from the main bedroom area which consisted of two single beds pushed together. There was a small balcony and adequate bathroom. The all day restaurant served good quality reasonably priced food ranging from snack to full meals and the breakfast was quite adequate and good choices. Staff were helpful and internet is available for a small charge. The acropolis is within easy walk and is veiwable from the rooftop lounge area of the hotel and is also within 100mtrs of the newly opened Musuem of the Acropolis ( which is well worth a visit). It is also short walk to Plaka.

overall, our stay was nice. great location thats not too noisy but within 5 minute walk of acropolis and plaka. the staff is incredibly nice - our luggage was lost and they stayed on top of everything to make sure we got it back. view from the roof deck is exceptional with a close and clear view of the parthenon. the included buffet breakfast is one of the best ive had in my travels through Europe. the room was nothing special but we weren't in it that much anyways - average with great air conditioning. the decor of the entire place was beautiful. the place could definitely use a swimming pool, although they do have jacuzzis, but athens is way too hot for them at any time.

We had an enjoyable stay for 3 nights at the Herodion Hotel in Athens.
The hotel is perfectly located, right next to the Acropolis and Parthenon, the new Acropolis museum and a few minutes walk from Plaka (the only beautiful part of Athens worth visiting due to the neo classical buildings).
The room that we had was absolutely tiny but well decorated and with good clean facilities. If you want a decent sized room, then ask for a street facing room instead of an Acropolis facing room. The roof sun deck is a breath of fresh air, with 2 jaccuzis and a phone in case you need a drink brought up. There is a newer 2nd roof deck on the 4th floor also with good views and very relaxing.
The Atrium restaurant serves lovely fresh, well seasoned and perfectly cooked food. The prices are reasonable too, given that all over Athens you can spend up to 30euros for lunch for 2 people without alcohol. Athens has many sights to see, although a lot of old neo-classical buildings were destroyed to make way for apartment buildings. We found the modern tram system to be a great way to get around, although it takes 1hour each way to get to the much nicer Voulla beach. Also when you get there you will pay 6euros entry and 4 euros per person for sun loungers. But the sea is worth it. The island tours booked from the hotel are very expensive but really good, including the food served.
We also enjoyed visiting Constitution Square, or "Syndagma" Square, to watch the changing of the guard (this happens on the hour). Most worth while places are within 20 minute walk from this hotel, so really was a good choice for us.

We stayed at the Herodion in July this year and found the place to be well above average, close to all the nice restaurants in the Plaka, close to the Acroppolis and the new museum. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was great with a balcony view of the Acroppolis. This is a very nice hotel for the price, it was a part of a very well priced packaged tour through Greece. We found the rest of Athens to be quite dirty (we took the subway/tram to the beach and was very disappointed with how filthy it was. To me, once you have seen the Acroppolis there is not much else to see in Athens. The Greek islands are fantastic though, well worth a 4-5 days in Santorini and Mykonos each.

The location is perfect and the hotel has been renovated recently. However, I think it is absolutely unnacceptable to make people pay for services which have to be free of charge in a 4 stars hotel. The price of a room in July, without discount, is 160 euros. Albeit it is pretty expensive you will have to pay one extra euro per day for the safe box and 6 (!) euros for the wifi. This is unsane.
