In the heart of downtown. Less than 10 minute walk from downtown terminus of bus #40 (bus runs from Akti Xavireou at Pireaus Port to Syntagma Square). Tickets for the bus can be purchased on board and were about 3 Euro each.

Hotel is across the street from Temple of Zeus and great view of Acropolis from other side of the hotel. If you have a view of the Temple of Zeus then you are on the busy traffic side of the Hotel. The view of the Acropolis is on the quite side of the Hotel.

Hotel is about a two block walk to the South Western Entrance to the Acropolis site. (Entrance to Acropolis was 12 Euro per person, but included the Agora Mueseum, the Theatre, the Acropolis, the Pantheon and others). Roof top restaurant had great view of Acropolis and simple menu with good food.

We only stayed one night at the Athens Gate after our cruise landed in Pireaus. Cost us 26 Euro $ from The Athens Gate to the Airport which took us about 35 minutes and there was no traffic at 6:30am on Sunday. There is a 24 hour express city bus from Syntagma Square to the airport, but didn't try this as to the early hour of our flights.

Room was clean and certainly adequate for spending the night - TV, safe, mini-bar. In room bathroom was North American in design.

  • Liked — Location. Clean. Friendly staff with good english language skills.
  • Disliked — Traffic sounds on busy side, which goes with the great central location in the heart of the city.

Great hotel. Excellent location and good service. Roof terrace restaurant/bar has fantastic views. Rooms aren't huge but nicely furnished and what else would you expect in a city centre hotel?

We picked Athens Gate Hotel based on the wonderful reviews from Tripadvisor. Lo and behold, we arrived and didn't have such a wonderful time like most of the travelers had. We arrived two hours past check in time and our room still wasn't ready. Having read the reviews, I requested a room facing the Acropolis due to the noise of the street traffic, and was told that we could not be accommodated. Oh well, that was fine; and sure, sometimes rooms are not ready...so the hotel comped our delayed room with two free drinks at roof top bar. Now the roof top view is marvelous, particularly at night when the city and its monuments are lit up. Plus, the breakfast there is a nice touch for a full day's agenda of sightseeing.

Okay, to the bad stuff. Approximately 12:30am, winding down from a long day of sightseeing and a large greek dinner, a strange woman holding her suitcase entered our room! As I am sure she was just as mortified as we were, she quickly left the room. Apparently she went down to the front desk to explain the situation faster than we could call and as my husband shared what had just happened the reception desk replied, "Yeah, we know about that", click. There was no "our apologies" nor "I'm sorry" just a "Yeah, we know about that."

So, the following morning, we went down to the reception to reiterate what had happened just a few hours earlier and to ensure that it would not happen again, and we received a rather chilly and aloof response. The manager replied, that coincidentally, a woman in a business suit had happened to mention that she walked into someone else's room. Uh, DUH, that was us! Again, no apologies just an apathetic look from management.

Well, we are giving this hotel two stars. One for the location (admittedly, it is wonderfully situated) and the other star for the friendly staff at the roof top bar/restaurant. Three stars eliminated for the terrible attitude of the reception and management staff. For shame Athen's Gate Hotel's crummy hotel management.

We stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel for 4 nights and found it the perfect location for our exploration of Athens. The reception staff were very helpful, graciously fulfiling our request for a move from a room with a view facing the Acropolis to a room facing the Temple of Zeus (the inevitable bit of street noise was worth it). The restaurant staff were pleasant and the breakfast nicely prepared, with excellent choice. Will defintely stay there again.

We stayed at Athens Gate for two nights prior to a cruise. It was perfect for our needs. We took at taxi from the airport for 30 Euros and were there in about 30 minutes. The hotel is modern and minimalist and reminded me of a hotel you'd find in Manhattan. Everything was new and clean and the bed was very firm. We were able to walk to the Acropolis and the Plaka district in less than five minutes and the view of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant was spectacular. Our room didn't have a view because it was in the back but it was very quiet there. Yanni the bellman was exceptionally helpful in explaining the room and giving us directions. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel because we preferred to eat at a traditional Greek restaurant so we ate at Platanos Taverna, only a ten minute walk from the hotel and an excellent choice if you'd like to dine like the locals. Breakfast at the hotel, included with the room, was very good. Two days provided just the right amount of time to see the major sights of Athens before the cruise. We took a taxi to the cruise port for 16 Euros. We would definitely stay at Athens Gate again.
