This hotel made out trip to Athens really enjoyable. The hotel has fairly recently been refurbished and from the moment we arrived on a boiling hot day to be offered glasses of ice cold water and Greek sweets everything was lovely.
The bar and restaurant on the roof has the most wonderful views, in front of the hotel is Hadrian's Gate and at the back what must be one of the best view in Athens of the Acropolis. There is a Metro station just behind the hotel and plenty of public transport including a Hop On Hop Off bus stop nearby so getting around is easy.
The food and service in the restaurant is excellent. What could be nicer than a breakfast starting with fresh fruit salad and creamy Greek yoghurt gazing at the Parthenon.
All the hotel staff where very helpful with our every request, I shall stay there again when I next visit Athens, I hope it will be soon!

pros
1) views: what I liked about the hotel the most was the views (on my 1st night, across from the temple of zeus) & at breakfast (quite a view of the acropolis)
2) location: walking distance to acropolis museum, the acropolis, the subway
3) hotel has been upgraded and could pass for a hip hotel

cons
1) service standards can be improved, i.e. when I asked one of the front desk staff for help, he answered "what's the problem" ... it was not just the words used (not a big deal, could be language barrier) but just the lack of a smile, this was the case w/all the frontdesk staff I met except for the man that worked the midnight shift
2) lack of cleanliness: the hotel is a hip hotel, but my room had hair on the floor, on the hand towels (red strands of hair), ditto for glassware & cutlery & etc.

The Athens Gate Hotel is centrally located and affords a great view of the Acropolis (we requested this view). It was amazing to see the night view from our hotel room. We definitely recommend this hotel if staying in Athens for only a few nights!

I booked this hotel in May 2008 based on the reviews on this site. While is was a nice hotel with a great location, I do not think it merits rave reviews given here.

Cons:
1) Uncomfortable bed. The mattress and pillows were dense, lumpy, hard and most uncomfortable.
2) The staff was a bit impersonal, not particularly helpful and sometimes bordering on standoffish. I accidently left something in the room of a time sensitive nature. When I called first thing the next day to try to arrange that it be sent to me, I was told to call back in the evening because they were busy. When I finally did call, they didn't know what I was referring to and didn't seem to have even looked in my room to try and find it telling me "nothing had been turned in."
3) No bathroom outlets and no door on the shower. No place to plug in a curling iron or razor and counterspace was very limited.
4) No free internet. I have stayed in many little boutique hotels which provide free internet access. When there is a laptop in the bar area, you must buy an internet card to use it. ,

Pros
1) Location, location, location, can't be beat, walking distance to Plaka, Olympic stadium, Parthenon, Temple of Zeus.
2) Every room has a great view
3) Breakfast was very good
4) Rooftop restaurant was a nice touch
5) Clean, new furnishing in Ikea style
