“Do not stay on the 7th floor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

My husband and I recently stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel, I thought I would get the only suite in the hotel which is on the 7th floor. Unfortunately the restaurant is right above your bed. By 6am in the morning and until about 1am in the morning you will not be able to sleep. All you will hear is the chairs moving on the hard floor above you.
Overall the hotel wasn't bad but due to lack of sleep we will never stay there again.
My husband did complain, but we felt we never were really offered any explaination or even felt like the staff cared. At the rates we paid a little apology would have been nice.

Room Tip: Maybe if you don't stay on the 7th floor you would be fine.

Check-in was fast & the staff at the reception desk were really friendly and helpful, especially Michael, We were given welcome drinks & Greek sweets that looked like Turkish delights. Our room on the 8th floor was nice & cosy. I like the modern design of the bedroom & bathroom & the air-con worked great in our room (very important as the temperature in Athens was 35-37 degrees when we were there). The best part of the hotel was the rooftop restaurant with fantastic Acropolis view. We had our buffet breakfast here every morning and started our day just admiring the Acropolis as we ate our breakfast. In the evenings, we also went up to see the Acropolis lighted up at night.

Location of the hotel was great. It is 5 minutes walk from the nearest metro station 'Akropoli' and there are many shops & cafes nearby. We espcially liked the gelato stall "Ice Queen" and the pasta cafe called "Spezie pasta" (we love their bacon & cheese pizza/pita cone) just opposite the Akropoli metro exit. The entrance to the Acropolis (south slope entrance) is just around the corner & the New Acropolis Museum is also nearby. Very convenient. We even walked to Syntagma (about 10-15 minutes walk) to see the changing of the guards at Parliament House, followed by a short walk to the shopping street Ermou Street.

The hotel has 2 computers with a printer at the lobby area for guests to use. Alternatively, if you brought along your laptop or mobile phone, you can have free wifi access at the lobby area (just ask the front counter staff for the password).Athens Gate even allowed us to leave one of our luggages with them when we left Athens for island hopping to return a few days later for our check-in. We were really grateful for that as we could travel light when we went to the islands.

To get to the hotel from Akropoli metro station : look for the exit nearest to the statues (inside Akropoli station), go up the escalator, then walk straight until you see the busy main road with lots of traffic. Turn left on the main road. Walk a few more steps and you will see Athens Gate Hotel on your left. About 5 minutes walk. Hope this helps.

We booked this hotel because of the pictures on the internet but the pictures don’t do justice to the amazing views of the Acropolis and the rest of the city. You get up to the roof restaurant for the first time and you are speechless. The location is great too, close to Plaka, Acropolis, Temple of Zeus, one block from the hop-on-hop –off bus.
The rooms are large, clean and well equipped. The décor is modern and simple, which we prefer. Breakfast was delicious and had a variety of options.
The staff at the reception desk were a little hectic when we checked in and it seemed like the person who was helping us was trying to get out of there and missed a few things, like the welcoming glasses of water and sweets that everyone else was getting.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is travelling to Athens.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the Temple of Zeus

We were extremely pleased with our recent stay two weeks ago at the newly remodeled Athens Gate hotel. The entire staff speak excellent English, are very friendly and helpful. We had a room on the 4th floor facing Zeus's Temple / Hadrian's Gate and we LOVED IT!

The hotel is within five minutes walk to the Plaka, and just across the street from Zeus's Temple and easy walking access to all major sites in Athens (within 10 - 15 minutes).

Our room was a great size, had beautiful light, was clean and had a terrific bath/shower.

Best of all, by far, was the beautiful rooftop terrace where breakfast is served and the stunning view of the Acropolis. The breakfasts were abundant and delicious consisting of: eggs, bacon or sausage, yogurt, cheeses, breads and rolls, sweet treats, dried fruits and other odds and ends. It was a wonderful way to start each day.

Without a doubt I would stay here again - I can't think of anything to improve our stay, it was delightful from beginning to end!

Room Tip: If you want a fun view, ask for the side that faces Zeus's Temple. Even though it faces a busy s...

Just stayed for three days at the Athens Gate. Can't imagine a more perfect location -- easy walk to the Acropolis, Temple of Zeus is across the street, and Plaka area with lots of shopping, cafe, and restaurants is steps away. Staff was tremendous, we enjoyed speaking with Jon (who was very helpful), and everyone was friendly, warm, and welcoming. Great breakfast with amazing views from the rooftop. Our 6th floor room also had a Parthenon view and a small balcony. Clean, modern decor, comfortable beds and pillows. Great place to stay; will definitely stay here again.

We only stayed here one night and purposely chose this Hotel because of the location. You also had two great views of the city. One from our room and one from the roof top restaurant. The elevator was so small we almost didn't fit with our luggages, ha ha. Over all the room was clean and sufficient not very big, but hey its Europe.

Travler tip if you are trying to Greece on the cheap one way to save money is to order food to go and not eat at the restaurant they charge you a lot to stay and eat and since it took us a little while to figure that out we also were tipping on top of that . . . .

There was lots of shopping, restaurants and stores in the area. Just go exploring! I would definitely come back to this hotel again.

The Athens Gate Hotel is in a great location, with the Acropolis and Temple of Olympian Zeus a stone's throw away. There are great views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant, where breakfast is served. We also requested a room with an excellent view of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, on the 6th floor, away from the busy main road below (but soundproofing is good). Staff were friendly and helpful. The offer of breakfast to take away early on the morning of our departure for the Greek Islands was much appreciated. Rooms are compact but comfortable and well maintained.
