We stayed for the first 2 nights during a 11 day trip. The reason we booked this hotel is because I am a Hilton Honors member and had enough points for 2 free nights. We were upgraded to the Executive Floor, which was nice because they had pretty much around-the-clock beverages (including some limited top shelf alcohol) and appetizers in the evenings. The breakfast was simple but nice. There was an amazing view of the acropolis from the lounge (and those rooms on that side). We had complimentary wine and fruit awaiting us in our room when we checked in.

The room was extremely clean, spacious, and comfortable. The king sized bed and high quality linens were a nice change to what were had at other hotels in Europe. We also got robes and slippers. Nice, brand-name toilettries were plentiful. We forgot our toothbrushes, and they were kind enough to provide complimentary dental kits. Separate bath and shower, large safe, in-room coffee/tea service, etc. I got ill during the stay, and so we asked if we could check out at 6pm since that was the time we needed to leave to make our flight to Santorini. They were quite accomodating and allowed us to do that with no hassle!

I have two negative comments. The location could be better. It is 1 block from the Evangelismos metro station (walk 1 block east from the station and you will arrive at the large hotel), so only 1 stop from Syntagma. But, despite how close it is to everything, you still need to take the metro to get there. We stayed in the Plaka at the end of our trip, and the proximity to everything there was great. Secondly, the internet access is cost-prohibitive. We brought our own computer for the trip, and was told that it was 9 euros for 1 hour or 27 euros for 24-hour access. Or we could use the business center which was even more expensive. We ended up using an internet cafe for 1.80 euros/30 min near Syntagma square.

  • Liked — Feel of an upscale American hotel, high-level of service and hospitality of the staff
  • Disliked — Nothing much negative to say, except location could have been better and internet too expensive

I had a regular room with an acropolis view, which was very comfortable, well maintained and with its own balcony. Great Shower, but stock standard Hilton toiletries are a bit of a let down.

Bar on the top floor of this hotel is a great place to unwind and watch the sunset, although food in the bar is expensive and average at best.

The hotel is in a pretty good location, but traffic noise is high by the pool. That said, not sure there is anywhere quiet in central Athens. Taxis in Athens are inexpensive and plentiful, so no problem getting around if you dont count the traffic.

The receptionist at the executive floor who checked me in was not exactly what you would call welcoming. So wasn’t a good start. Executive lounge is comfy, has a great view, is well stocked with drinks and has an reasonable breakfast. Lounge is let down by only having expensive wireless internet.

  • Liked — Views from bar and nice room
  • Disliked — Not a very welcoming welcome

We travelled here for a short half-term holiday with children, so other reviewer issues with Internet access didn't affect us as we weren't working!

I was actually very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It's not perfect, but I thought it offered good value and services for a European capital city.

Unlike some other recent reviewers, I found the service to be helpful and every request I made was responded to. The restaurant reservations I asked them to make prior to my arrival (and arranging airport pick-up) were done and confirmed to me via e-mail. Talking of restaurants, I wasn't going to try Byzantine (owing to previous negative reviews) but I ended up dining there one evening and, again, I couldn't see what these negative reviewers were on about ; the food was actually very good, well presented, we were seated away from any smokers, the linen and glassware is very good quality etc.

The lobby is elegant, large and minimalist in design, the Galaxy rooftop bar is stupendous. The bedrooms are not large but are uncluttered, so they feel comfortable. The marble bathrooms are also well-designed and accommodate a bath as well as a separate spacious walk-in shower. Housekeeping and turndown were perfect and our towels/ bath products always replaced - morning and evening.

We stayed on the Exec Floor - breakfast was adequate but offerings at other times of day were frugal! However as we had always planned to dine out at night, this stopped us over-eating!

My boys loved swimming in the indoor pool and all the staff at the spa were charming. There is also an excellent outdoor pool, which was still open as the weather was excellent.

The Hilton's location IS noisy - my husband had to use ear plugs to sleep at night! But the whole of central Athens seems to be like this - horns blaring, cars accelerating up the streets at 2am - so I'm not sure that staying in another central hotel would be very different (unless you stayed in pedestrianised Plaka, but then you'd probably be kept awake by people leaving bars in the middle of the night).

The Hilton is very close (about 3 mins' walk) to the Evangelismos underground station and the Athens Metro is excellent, clean and easy to use. We also found the taxis cheap - none of the fares cost us more than about 8 E.

Finally I'd like to praise Athens; it's fascinating with superb museums/ sites; I found most Athenians charming and really helpful. It's a city that is well worth a visit and I think the Hilton delivers well.

Other restaurant tip for a splurge: Orizontes (the smart restaurant not the cafe - excellent).

Close enough to the major sites of Athens, this hotel makes a great place to stay if you are cashing in Hilton Honors points. If you are paying the full price, you may be disappointed in both the customer service and the overall look and feel of the hotel. The rooms are small yet decent, but on the whole, the hotel is less shiny and luxurious than one would expect. The staff is lukewarm and not eager to assist even with check-in and luggage storage. On two occasions front desk staff gave us erroneous information about which of the hotel’s own restaurants were currently open for dining. Though the Hilton website says there are views of the Acropolis, the Plaka and Acropolis are a good 20-25 minute walk or several metro stations (including switching lines) away. This is worth 39,000 Hilton Points, but not $335 USD.

The Hilton Athens is located near the city center of Athens, and a 35-40 Euro cab ride from the airport, or a 6 Euro subway ride and a short walk from the station across the road from the Hilton. One downside to the subway is it only leaves the airport every thirty minutes.

The hotel is clean and modern, and is close to many of the tourist areas of Athens. The executive floor on 11 offers a good view of the city and a typical executive lounge fare of drinks and continental breakfast. The rooftop bar on the top floor offers a great view at sundown.

Although high quality hotels are relatively limited in downtown Athens, and the Hilton is one of the better properties, I can suggest three things that one should consider when staying at this property.

1) The internet at this property – rots. There is a system for wireless (WiFi) which works in the lobby and on the 11th floor executive lounge. There is another DIFFERENT system that works in your room. At a “mere” 29 euros per day, at a business hotel, one should expect an integrated system that allows the use of wired and wireless internet. And, one should expect a system that works! At this Hilton, you get the “privilege’ of buying two services if you are going to do any work in your room – and outside of your room. In addition, the internet in the conference rooms downstairs didn’t work at all. Complaints to the management were met with a bit of puzzled looks, and when informed that I was a frequent traveler they suggested that they might look into it, but then again, who knows.

2) This property is near two major roads. I have attached a photo from our balcony to show the view and the traffic. Even being on the 12th floor, the road noise at night was more than one would expect. There isn’t much the hotel can do about this, but you should be aware if you are a light sleeper.

3) Taxis in Athens continue to be a challenge for me. Apparently, if you have the doorman wave a taxi to pick you up, there is a 3 euro surcharge. In addition to being ripped off coming from the Airport on prior trips (hence the suggestion of taking the subway) and being charged 37 euros to go to the Airport from the Hilton in spite of the meter reading 23 euros, I can only offer the suggestion of “buyer beware”.

Overall, the hotel itself is fairly nice, and the location is convenient to many locations downtown, as long as you don’t need the internet (or can afford to spend a lot on two internet purchases) this can be a good place to stay.
