“Amazing Hotel (and don't forget the spa!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2009

Right from when you pull-up it is obvious this hotel is all about luxury. The rooms were amazingly detailed with tall ceilings and lots of gold touches. The bathroom was nice as well (huge tub!). We had a room overlooking the street which was really nice. One of the best things about this place though was the spa downstairs. When you walk in there is a tea bar where you can just take a pot with you to your room or wherever you want. The workout room in there is nice as well. The thing I liked the most though is that they give you free use of the steam-room, locker room and beautiful indoor salt-water swimming pool and spa! Oh, not to mention the breakfast is on the rooftop from where you have a perfect view of the Parthenon.... AMAZING!

You don't need to spend this much to have a nice stay in Athens. That said, this is an extremely high quality hotel in an unbeatable location. If you find a nice rate online (i found a rate on expedia a solid 40% below the hotel website) then go for it if you can swing it. Just be careful about eating/drinking in the hotel. It's massively overpriced, especially as Athens is full of wonderful places to eat and drink for amazing prices.

One other tip: go to a place called Thannasis a five-minute walk from the hotel for ridiculously good souvlaki :)

We moved to the Grande Bretagne after a not-so-great experience at another hotel, and it made us sad we didn't stay there from day one. The staff were absolutely perfectly gracious and service was flawless. The only thing is that this hotel is not for the faint of wallet. All extra amenities and meals are exorbitantly high. You can easily pay over 50 euro for breakfast and it was 12 euro for a cup of tea for room service. So, while this hotel is wonderful, make sure you are prepared for the bill as well.

Also, the view from the top floor bar is incredible--as a treat in Athens, whether you stay there or not, that should definitely be experienced.

Wonderful stay. The location and the view from the roof-top restaurant are not to be missed, nor are the ornate and comfortable rooms.

I would like to be able to write something critical of this hotel, by way of a thorough review, but I couldn’t find anything bad to say about it! It ranks among the best hotels that I have ever stayed in, anywhere in the world. In the final analysis it is not opulence that makes a great hotel but the staff, and at the Grand Bretagne I never found them to be anything other than pleasant, helpful, and eager to please. It was a pleasure to interact with them. When we arrived, exhausted from our overnight flight and with our luggage lost by AirOne, our room was not quite ready, and so the reception offered us complementary refreshment in their WinterGarden Restaurant. Check out their tea, served in silver teapots with real leaf tea (not fannings) and tea-strainers! And if you really want to be old-world decadent, check out their High Tea!
The décor of this hotel is C19th with ample use of the Greek Key motif, and many fine, old, original paintings and prints. We booked a fairly ordinary room (with a window that overlooked the pedestrian street at the back of the hotel); the room was adequately quiet, the furniture was elegant and refined, and the bathroom was beautiful, with 3 different types of marble (or marble + Corex perhaps). In addition to the WinterGarden, there are 2 other restaurants in the hotel: the Grand Bretagne Corner, off the main lobby, and the Roof Garden restaurant, which is also where breakfast is served (I particularly liked the fact that this hotel starts serving breakfast at 6:30am, so you can get an early start on the day). We enjoyed the GB corner for traditional Greek dishes; the Roof Garden is an Italian restaurant, but check out the view of the Acropolis at sunrise and sunset! Next time I go to Athens, I will definitely stay there again! Might even splurge for a room with a view of the Acropolis!

This is an amazing hotel. We booked the hotel on Starwood Points and stayed for 2 nights... when we arrived at the hotel we were upgraded to a suite on the top floor. It was amazing with its own sitting room, front entrance and huge bathroom. THe room also had fresh flowers a fresh fruit basket, complimentary chocolates and local liqueur. Because we had a suite, we also had our own butler which we never did use. Although everything at the hotel is exceptionally pricey - we cant complain about our stay. We thorougly enjoyed using the rooftop pool as well as spa in the basement of the hotel (both complimentary). The location of the hotel is also great, just off the Metro line and in Syntagma Square - so within walking distance to most sights in Athens. We would definetly go back again although I am not sure we would ever pay the prices they are asking to stay there. It was well worth our Starwood points though.

We stayed 6 nights in November(fortunately left 1 week before the riots) and loved all of it. The hotel is quite well located at the Syntagma with the metro subway station directly in front of it. Taking the subway will only set you back 6euros if you're coming from the airport (blue line). The Acropolis station is one more stop away (need to change to the red line) but walking is just as easy.

Traveling with a 6yr old and infant in tow is never easy but the hotel did accommodate for us. We got upgraded to a deluxe suite which when combined with sheraton's buy 4 get 2 nights free promotion, worked out quite nicely. The suite was very spacious, clean and well appointed. The bathroom with separate shower and bath was excellent. Slight pity the bath tv wasnt working but then again, we dont watch much tv. The previous reviewer lamented on the lack of cupboard space and this is true if you are traveling with lots of clothing requiring to be hung. Drawer space however is good.

Internet access is available via both LAN and WLAN but is not free. You can buy access for 1 hour (5euros) or by the day.

We couldnt try out the main pool as it was closed for the winter but there is a very nice heated 20m pool with adjacent saunas at the basement level. You should have at least one dinner at the rooftop restaurant as the food and view is very good, and prices though expensive were not exorbitant.

Overall a fine hotel which deserves 5 stars.
