This hotel is incredibly welcoming and the epitome of hospitality. Every request was promptly fulfilled. We were upgraded to a suite and while it was an inside room, with only a view of the courtyard perhaps that was best since Syntagma Square was extremely busy with concerts and a road race and other activities during our stay. Having a drink at sundown at the rooftop bar overlooking the Acropolis was absolutely breathtaking. This quickly became a daily activity.

The hotel has special private butlers/concierges for certain floors and guests in suites. This made the stay like a boutique hotel. The butler staff was excellent with their recommendations of restaurants, booking a guide and helping with a car rental. The staff was wonderful and by the end we felt like we were friends with all of them. (Perhaps that says more about us than them.)

The suite was spacious with a separate sitting room and bedroom. The bathroom was extremely large with a soaking tub and a separate shower. Hypo-allergenic pillows were provided upon request and the hotel has a pillow menu.

Anyway, the Hotel Grande Bretagne is one of the finest hotels that I've ever stayed in and is certainly first class.

We stayed in a Junior Suite at the Grande Bretagne for our Honeymoon. The room was absolutely stunning, large, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. (I left a jacket in the room while we went to the Islands for a couple of days and they kept it for me until we returned to Athens). The location is next to the tourist focused Platka district, which, as tourists, was exactly what we were looking for. I highly recommend this Starwood property.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Grande Bretagne on our way to Santorini for our honeymoon, and it was a great way to start our trip. The hotel is luxurious, beautifully decorated, and the staff is top notch. Our luggage was lost by the airlines enroute, and the staff went above and beyond calling the airlines and airport to try and locate it, while making our stay as comfortable as possible without our personal belongings. They sent amenities (wine and chocolate) to our room as the travel agent had informed them that it was our honeymoon. Our room was on the 2nd floor, and although other reviews indicate the high level floors have the best view of the acropolis, from our balcony - we had a great view of Parlament and the Acropolis. The bathroom was 1 of the biggest I have ever seen, certainly adds to the luxury and high scale of this hotel.
The hotel is located in the heart of Athens, convenient for sightseeing. The roof top lounge and restuarant provide a great view of the acropolis.
We loved Greece and will plan another trip there, will certainly make a stop at the Grand Bretagne again.

This is right in the centre of Athens and an absolutely superb hotel with great rooms, public areas and the super roof top restaurant with views to the Acropolis and the Parliament building. Its convenient for all facilities , sightseeing and the restaurants of Plaka and around. You dont need to use the hotels restaurants as these are more expensive and in the case of the celebrated GB corner a little dark and uninviting. The hotel is so well appointed it is used by VIP's when we were there the PM of the Czech Republic was staying there so we had airport style security in the foyer, and secret service people around, very James Bond!!
The hotel is also right next to the parliament so you can get to see changing of the guard when tour groups are not around, go on Sunday when the soldiers wear the full white uniform as in the post cards that you see.
There are so many good restaurants in 10 minutes walk from the hotel we tries Hermion in Plaka and a super one in Psiri not far from the Agora and these are well priced and tasty with many good Greek dishes , the salads are always great and sensibly priced Greek wine 12-18E not bad for a big city
The only moan ,we were here early in April , but the temperature was already up to 28C and the open air pool only just opened 11am to 4pm when we were out enjoying the city, so were not able to use when we would have liked at 5pm after a day out, presumably its open longer later in the season and the subterranean spa pool had little appeal on such days
Nevertheless we would not look elsewhere should we return, the touches and style of the hotel make it hard to fault

  • Liked — Bathroom , View over Acropolis from rooftop
  • Disliked — Traffic outside, careful crossing roads in Constitution Square

My husband and I stayed at the Grande Bretagne for 3 days during a trip to Greece. The hotel is very conveniently located in downtown Athens, an easy walk to the Plaka and Acropolis. While we took a taxi to the hotel from the airport, it is actually extremely easy (and much cheaper) to take the subway between the airport and the hotel, as there is a station immediately outside the hotel.

The lobby is fairly standard-issue "grand hotel" - very nice, but nothing all that memorable. However, the room was probably the best I have stayed in in many years. Very high ceilings, beatiful marble bathroom, gorgeous woodwork, wonderful mattress and bedding. There was some street noise with the windows open, but practically none when they were closed. In addition, the hallways in the hotel were not dim and depressing like most big hotels - they were painted a beautiful sunny yellow with interesting prints, lamps, side tables etc. There is a rooftop bar and restaurant with views of the Parthenon, which is especially beautiful lit up at night; however, the food is extremely expensive and, though an excellent breakfast buffet is served there, I don't think it is worth the price unless included in the room package.
