My husband and I stayed at the Grande Bretagne for 3 days during a trip to Greece. The hotel is very conveniently located in downtown Athens, an easy walk to the Plaka and Acropolis. While we took a taxi to the hotel from the airport, it is actually extremely easy (and much cheaper) to take the subway between the airport and the hotel, as there is a station immediately outside the hotel.

The lobby is fairly standard-issue "grand hotel" - very nice, but nothing all that memorable. However, the room was probably the best I have stayed in in many years. Very high ceilings, beatiful marble bathroom, gorgeous woodwork, wonderful mattress and bedding. There was some street noise with the windows open, but practically none when they were closed. In addition, the hallways in the hotel were not dim and depressing like most big hotels - they were painted a beautiful sunny yellow with interesting prints, lamps, side tables etc. There is a rooftop bar and restaurant with views of the Parthenon, which is especially beautiful lit up at night; however, the food is extremely expensive and, though an excellent breakfast buffet is served there, I don't think it is worth the price unless included in the room package.

This hotel is one of the nicest I have ever stayed at. I've done a bit of traveling to Europe and found this hotel one to be the best so far. Although a bit on the small size, the room was to die for. The decor, the bathrooms and bedding was amazing. The hotel restaurant had the best truffle rissotto I have ever tasted. We were hosting a very large conference during my stay and we couldn't have been happier with the service.

There's probably no point writing this review as everyone seems to agree that this hotel is superb, but anyway! I'm very bias as I am 100% pro-Greece after spending many years going backwards and forwards to Athens and the islands. To me it is undoubtedly the coolest and most friendliest country on the planet so I had very high expectations of this hotel and I was not in the slightest bit disappointed. Stayed here for 4 nights - got a pay for 3, stay for 4 night deal on their webpage which was great. Compared to other luxury hotels around the world this hotel is very inexpensive. Location is brilliant. right in the middle of everything. Few minutes walk to Plaka and the wonderful restaurants and cafes that beautiful Athens has to offer. The sumptuousness of this place hits you as soon you enter the revolving door - after the super relaxed and friendly doormen help you with your bags. We booked a Junior Sute and were told we'd been upgraded to a Grand Suite on arrival and so therefore we could do our check-in on the 5th floor. When we got up there we had instant check-in organised and our "bulter" was arranged to come and meet us in our room. She was so friendly and sweet and showed us everything in the room and gave us 2 chilled glasses of champagne. The room was divine. So elegant and absolutely spotless and immaculate. I absolutely adored the complimentary hand made chocolates and sweets that were replenished every day aswell as countless bottles of free water left in each of the rooms, as well as an enormous fruit bowl replenished daily. The marble bathrrom was gorgeous with large mirrors, 2 sinks, beautiful toiletires, cosmetic mirror with its own light and the best robes we've ever come across - such that we purchased 2 when we left. The bed was the most beaufitul I've ever slept in and it was hard to drag myself put of it each morning. We had 2 large windows opening out onto Syntagna square with a great view of the Acropolis. The room was just so compfy and homely and was so great to just relax in. The Winter Garden lounge downstairs quickly became our favourite spot to hang out in every afternoon. No matter how bustling and busy it was with businessmen, chic Athenians and in-house guests we were always found a table. This is such a wonderful place to while away the afternoons. Large comfy couches, pianist tinkering away in the corner, the clatter of crockery and cutlery and the soft hum of chit-chat. Every afternoon we had high tea of caviar, finger sandwiches, sensational hot scones with clotted cream and jam, champagne and handmade sweets. Service was impeccable and staff so accommodating and always with a smile. The breakfast buffet on the roof boasts amazing views of the Acrolpolis - you cant take your eyes off it! Well, maybe just for a moment while you go and work out where you're going to start with the sensational food! A large cold cuts and cheese selection, cereals, traditional hot cheese pies, great selection of fruit, the usual eggs, bacon, sausages but my favourite area was the bakery area. So many muffins, friands, croisssants but best of all - hot jam donuts! For Breakfast! They were divine. In-room dining was wonderful and everything came as we ordered it. I asked for vanilla icecream with my pancakes which was not on the menu but of course it came just as requested! Their hot chocolate is just that - smooth, milk chocolate melted, oh so decadent! We also had dinner one night in the restaurant on the roof and it was a very elegant experience. Beautiful soft lighting and beaufitul fresh ingredients. We had a massage at the Spa and the girls were so professional. I've had many massages but can honeslty say that was the best we've ever had. Afterwards we were taken to a relaxation room and could help ourselves to tea and just relax on the couches reading magazines for as long as we liked. We also swam in the indoor pool and used each of the magnificent steam rooms. Overall the whole experience couldnt be faulted. When we left there was a demonstration in Syntagma Square and we were told we wouldnt be able to get a taxi for the airport as they were all on strike but the concierge made a few phonecalls and then dragged our bags for about 5 minutes through the streets to get us safely on our way. Certainly one of the absolute best luxury hotels of the world.

  • Liked — So luxurious, so professional, afternoons in the Winter Garden
  • Disliked — Leaving (seriously, it was very hard to do!)

The best hotel I have ever experienced. Top notch luxury which is somehow affordable. Best location in Athens. Get a room with a view of the Acropolis, it is incredible. Great spa. Phenomenal breakfast buffet in the rooftop restaurant. Absolutely incredible hotel.

My stay at the Grand Bretagne was one of the most pleasant and luxurious hotel experiences I've enjoyed in my life. The property is beautiful, centrally located downtown, next to parliament, shopping ares and old town neighborhood Plaka.
Athens is a bit more chaotic then the rest of southern europe so beware. It's all rather dusty and noisy, and a bit arid. Definitely more Cairo then Lisbon. It was relatively hard to say the hotel's name to the cab driver, but eventually he got it, and we were there.
The hotel lobby is grand and impressive, luxurious without being too heavy or over-the-top. Really tasteful, bright and comfortable. The bar is one of the most stunning rooms I've ever seen: a relatively small side-wing of the living room, with a dramatic high ceiling, a magnificent tapestry on the wall behind the green marble bar and dark oak-wood paneling on the walls. Again, it manages to overwhelm you and at the same times feel like home.
We stayed in two different rooms on two different nights, as we were spending the week in Mykonos.
The standard room was exquisite but small. White, black and brown marble bathroom, with walk-in shower, tub and double vanity, an excellent king-size bed, a small desk with chair and a LCD TV cabinet, overlooking the courtyard.
The deluxe room on the second night was much more spacious: wider bathroom and sitting area, with a desk and two chairs and a banquette at the beds feet. Period furnishings (a light take on french empire), very comfortable and efficient. Classic plump luxury.
The breakfast at the hotels rooftop was a marvelous experience. Enormous variety of hot and cold dishes, bread, desserts, marmalades, etc, with a stunning view of Athens all around you. Absolutely worth the 36 Euros.
The Spa in the basement is also quiet remarkable. Huge pool, an array of showers, turkish baths and saunas, and a complete menu of massages and therapies.
There is also a lovely rooftop pool, with 180º views of Athens, with a bar, wich we found ideal to spend our last few hours in town.
We didn't try the restaurant, but the concierge was helpful enough to book us a table at a uber-trendy place we adored.

  • Liked — The spa, the breakfast, rooftop pool, the bar, the deluxe room
  • Disliked — the pricetag on the small standard room could be a bit smaller.
