“Taxi Caveat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

The location of the hotel was superb. Our 7th floor room overlooked Syntagma Square and had a view of the Acropolis. Most of the major sites, including the Acropolis, were within walking distance, weather permitting (it was 40degrees while we were there). The rooms were well maintained, albeit dim, and the roof top restaurant where breakfast was served, again had a fantastic view of the Acropolis.

We had one hiccup at the end of our stay. The driver, organized by the hotel, who took us around town the previous day, offered to take us to the airport on our departure day. The flat rate to the airport is 35 euros. He billed us through the hotel for 48 euros and when we inquired, we were told it was because we were being driven specially in a Mercedes and many taxis are not Mercedes and will "not have aircon, have their windows rolled down...". We didn't see any of this during our two day stay in Athens, and many of the taxis waiting outside the hotel were Mercedes. My husband asked a second receptionist about the charge and this time the reply was that the driver had told the butler that he was taking us to several different places before taking us to the airport. The butler did not inform or confirm this with us and we came away questioning the integrity of the hotel staff and wondering whether they were safeguarding the interests of their guests. For this reason, fours stars only from us.

Note that the Greek restaurant in the hotel is only open Monday to Friday. And the pool in the afternoon is crowded so don't count on cooling down there after sightseeing in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Acropolis.

Don't be put off by reviews describing the Grande Bretagne as expensive. For a luxury hotel with the best location in Athens, it is worth every penny! The view of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant is spectacular. The food and service is top notch. Rooms have all the amenities, although ours was on an interior courtyard. However, all the views you want are right outside your door. We stayed here pre-cruise and were very pleased. If we return to Athens, we will stay at the Grande Bretagne!

Room Tip: Inside courtyard rooms are quiet, but have no views.

This is an old, historic hotel with charm and a very regal feel to it. It is quite expensive but worth in my opinion. My friend and I were looking for an oasis at the end of our trip and this hotel was definitely it. Our room was comfortable and roomy. The rooftop restaurant was beyond superb, delicious with one amazing view.

I would recommend and make reservations for the restaurant should you choose to dine there. The hotel will provide transfer from the airport but it is about twice the cost if you just take a cab yourself.

We stayed on our last night of our 3.5 week European holiday. The hotel is old school and the room we had on the butler floor overlooking the corner of the parliament was great, if a little noisy on arrival but then we never heard the noise at night. Agree that Internet should be included for at least Starwood SPG members. On check out I noticed we were never charged for 2 device codes- happy with that!

The French champagne on arrival to recognise our special occasion was pure class.

The restaurant on top was pricey and the view a little bit side on compared to others so we did not dine there.

Found staff to be friendly enough and loved the chubby dog on the front steps of the luxury hotel and that on the 45 degree heat day they let him relax on the marble stairs in the shade. Called the Butler service to arrange diner reservation and the service from that individual was terrific (12th July 2012). When we arrived at the restaurant, we had the best table and it was packed so they must have some influence to book at 3pm for 10pm!

Location is perfect and walking distance or a 4 euro cab ride. We were worried about the riots and the position of the hotel and whilst we saw a protest by the elderly on pensions that day on TV, we saw none of it at the hotel.

Definitely find your way to the changing of the guards not only at the parliament house but also at the presidents residence as that was even better with 2 soldiers having a dual!

Grande Bretagne Hotel in Athens is one of the most historic hotels (it was the German headquarters during World War Two) and one of the best hotels in town …. also one of the most expensive. It’s located right on Syntagma (Consitiution) Square, in the centre of Athens, diagonally opposite the Greek Parliament.

As a result, you get a fine view of the Evzones changing the guard every hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (The Good), and a close-up look at almost every demonstration and riot that occurs in the city because most occur at the hotel’s front door (The Bad). See my photos for some examples.

Sometimes these disturbances are just local protests, or fairly peaceful demonstrations. Sometimes they are serious riots with protestors throwing Molotov cocktails and police throwing tear-gas. At all times, they’re noisy. This is why the Grand Bretagne recently installed metal anti-riot doors and shutters. If you’re caught in a riot here, just duck into the Grande Bretagne before they roll down these excellent metal doors and you’ll be safe.

The Grand Bretagne also has an excellent view of the Acropolis from its roof-top bar and restaurant. You can take your friends up there for a drink at sunset, without being a guest in the hotel, to enjoy the vista.

But don’t get carried away by the view, and shout your friends Midori Cocktails like I did. The bill for just 4 cocktails came to 120 Euros! (I’d call that The Ugly).

Room Tip: Ask for an Acropolis View room on a high floor.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for posting your comments after your recent visit to the Hotel Grande Bretagne. We are happy that you enjoyed our GB Roof Garden Restaurant & Bar with your friends, but were surprised to read that you paid such an amount for 4 cocktails. Please be informed that our most expensive cocktail is priced at €21, as it is the most exclusive cocktail on the menu containing Champagne. Overall, we have reduced all our prices in the hotel outlets, including our cocktails and drinks. Hopefully we will have the pleasure to see you again, maybe this time in the brand new GB Roof Bar with views of Lycabettus Hill.

What a beautiful. property. My only negatives are no free Internet in the rooms and drinks so expensive you are forced to walk 200 yards to buy beer and wine at a local supermarket for a third of the price of what the hotel charges. We where there July 7 to July10 and it wasnt busy at all Such a shame no one is keeping tab on how much the bars are losing by letting people go elsewhere to drink for next to nothing versus what the hotel charges.

Spent a couple of days here before start of our cruise and vacation, and must say this was a real treat. The roof top pool has great views of Athens and a killer greek salad. And the restaurant / bar on top of the building simply can not be beat for views of the Acropolis. We also had a room with small balcony facing the Parliament building (312), the square and the Acropolis, and had a ringside seat to the demonstrations (quite peaceful) being held the night before the latest Greek national election (round 2). Exercise facility in lower floor is first rate, and spa is world class. Large department store is directly behind the hotel and many important sites in Athens are in easy walking distance. We definitely will be staying here (for a longer stay) next time we are in Athens!
