“Wow! Will recommend to anyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2007

I was in Athens for 2 days and this hotel was fantastic especially for the short time i was there. Central to all the attractions, walked to everything within 15mins. Location is fantastic, bars, restuarants, shops and markets all surround the hotel. Had a view of the Acropolis from my belcony. Room was just as shown on the website, only disappointing thing was the bathroom - the shower nozzel had to be held and shower doors didn't close. Breakfast was great - croisants, bread, sausages, egg, cereal, fruit, jam, cheese and cold meat., coffee, tea..kept me going the whole day. Receiption staff were very helpful, organising tours and area info etc.
The metro is just around the corner and if coming from the airport its the last stop - Monastraki, only costs EUR 6 single from airport. Metro is easy to use too although, if staying in Plaka hotel you can just walk everywhere.
Definately recommend doing a 1 day cruise to the 3 Islands - Aegina, Hydra and Poras - was beautiful. Personally you can do the ruins in Athens within a day.
I'd stay at this hotel again and recommend it to everyone...no regrets.

Great location a few hundred metres from Monistiraki station-direct from airport in a beautiful, immaculate ,punctual train.
Front desk staff the best I have come across in my extensive travels.Good breakfast.Clean rooms. The rooftop bar was closed for the winter but we went up every day & night to enjoy THE view.
Acropolis side rooms were all taken so we stayed in noisy side of hotel-quiet until about 2a.m. -then a lot of street noise until about 5! Double glazing is required.Beds too hard -extra,extra firm. All up a very good ,reasonably priced hotel I would stay in again-in a quieter room.

This a nice and practical hotel near the pedestrian areas of the old town.

  • Liked — The position.

Took the metro from the airport to Monastiraki, which was quick, efficient and cheap. The hotel was close, but the map on their website was unhelpful, though we found it OK.

Check-in staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, in contrast to reports in other reviews. Yes the room was small, the bathroom especially so, but it was clean and comfortable. I've never yet had a room in any European capital city which was large, even at much higher rates than this one, so I didn't expect anything different. Although we had a room at the front, we didn't get any noise at all.

The location is fantastic. The view from the roof bar of the Parthenon is tremendous, especially at sunset. It was a modest walk from most of the sights and close to the tourist restaurants and shops. Also easy to use the metro to get elsewhere.

We'd definitely recommend it for a long weekend. Great value for a great location.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Plaka Hotel for 1 night on our return from the Greek Islands. We were not impressed! Admittedly it has a great location, only a short walk to the Acropolis, Plaka, Sygmata Sq etc -however this is about all it has.

The staff on the front desk were not very welcoming, after a long ferry journey and when we asked about the time breakfast was served he didn't know! So we had to make sure we got up a bit earlier to make sure we didn't miss it.

We were very disappointed with our room- it is literally the narrowest hotel room I have ever seen and felt like we were sleeping in a corridor! It was approximately 6ft at the narrowest point. And the shower-room/ toilet was tight at 4ft by 4ft. The room decor was ok, but not as good as other hotels of equivalent class we had stayed in throughout our holiday.

All in all, I suppose it served its purpose as a place to bed down for the night, but at approximately £95 for a night I expect a bit more. On our way to the islands we stayed at a different hotel around the Ommonia Square Area. It was only a couple of stops on the metro to get to the acropolis and was easy to use. Hotels like the Hotel Plaka, rely on their location and feel they don't need to make an effort. If you want better service and value for money it's worth considering staying a little further out of the plaka district.

Kind of torn in regards Hotel Plaka. The location is amazing. Really, can't do any better than this. Great roof top view of the Parthenon. Right by lovely square where you can relax and have a drink in the evening. Moments walk from the Parthenon. Decor is fine and despite other reviewers' complaints I found the bathroom size adequate and fine. But the beds! Oh my word, the beds. Seriously, prison issue. I'm not a fussy sleeper or particularly given to physical ailments but I actually had a back ache after sleeping two nights in a row on these slabs of concrete. Truly bad. I think the noise level depends on what room you are assigned. The noise level in our room was very, very high. Luckily, neither my traveling companion nor I care that much (apartment livers all our lives, so can tune it out). But for those who are sensitive to street noise, best to ask for a room off street. Breakfast was awesome - wonderful spread. We looked forward to it every day. I would have given this a much better star rating if it weren't for those awful, awful beds. Interestingly, all the other positives are strong enough that I would consider staying here for a day or two again (not long term though).

  • Liked — Location and breakfast.
  • Disliked — Horrible, hard beds.

Close to the Plaka Market and the Acropolis. Reasonably priced with friendly staff. However, the beds and pillows are crap. Also, the bathrooms are small but are clean..which is more important to me then size! I'd stay here again for a night but long term. Its not a luxury hotel more like a Holiday Inn.
