This hotel has earned my respect and continued patronage over the past five years, and has become my favorite while visiting Athens. I've travelled extensively throughout Greece for the past 34 years, so I can speak with some authority on the subject. I've tried the Athenian 5 stars which offer such ammenities as fluffy bathrobes, spas/pools, multi-course breakfasts, in-room jacuzzis, over-furnished livingroom areas, and gigantic beds...but keep in mind, they also come with "gigantic" rates (ie. 750 euros/night) and in spite of this, can't even offer a better location and in most cases, a better view than The Plaka Hotel!!
The Plaka Hotel is perfect for travellers who simply want to see the sights and enjoy the city of Athens! It is not a hotel for people who will be spending a lot of time in their room sitting on the balcony, taking a leisurely bath, ordering room service etc. The historic district is literally at your feet, within walking distance to all of the major sights. There's also a tourist tram that stops nearby if you want to get an over-view of the historic sites first. The hotel is conveniently located near the Monastiraki subway station, so for a few euros you can access the airport, outlying suburbs, and the port of Piraeus.
I agree, the room size is modest and the bathrooms are small, but furnished daily with plenty of clean towels, soaps and shampoo. The bath tub (which exists in many other Greek hotels) is indeed small and contoured, but it offers the choice of a shower or bath. The beds are twin, affording greater flexibility depending on the configuration of guests. Greek hotel mattresses tend to be a lot more firm than one might be accustomed to, but the extra pillows and blankets provided are very nice to have.
Our room has always been spotless. They are furnished simply and adequately with plenty of closet space, air-conditioning, in-room safe, television, and mini-fridge which allows you to stock up on your own choice of beverage....not those "mini bar" over-priced selections that many hotels typically offer. There are plenty of little shops in the Plaka which sell a nice selection of wine, beverages, food and snacks. Some rooms have a view of the Acropolis, which is illuminated until late at night....GORGEOUS! If your room doesn't have an Acropolis view, the rooftop is available to guests through out the day until 12 midnight. The view from the rooftop is one of the best hotel views in the city!
The breakfast selection is as varied as many 5-star hotels; the exception is that I do not believe that you can custom-order eggs or get fresh-squeezed orange juice........but why not try the Greek offerings?! The yogurt & honey, cakes, and the tomatoes/feta/olives are delicious. The coffee machine is the same one used by many hotels. If you don't like hotel coffee (a problem we've had throughout Greece AND Italy), there's a Starbucks with an amazing view of the Cathedral a few steps away from the hotel and numerous cafes in the area. The Plaka's breakfast room also has quite a useful brochure rack, with one of the best Athens city maps available.
Last but certainly not least, the Plaka Hotel's staff is welcoming and helpful whether you have a specific issue with your room or just need some general directions. From the initial booking to check-out, our reservations have always been handled in a professional and efficient manner. This is an exceptionally good-value hotel for an inner-city location...more than that....we have always enjoyed our visit and can't wait to go back next year!
