We only stayed here for one night, as we had a stopover in Athens on our way back from Crete. I'm sure that there are cheaper hotels in Athens, but it's worth the extra expense for the convenience of location -- just a couple of minutes walk from Monastiraki Station in the city center. It's great to arrive at night (as we did) because you walk out of the metro station and the first thing you see is the Acropolis all lit up on the mountain and you can't be mistaken about where you are.
Athens, as you may have heard, is a rather dirty, trash-strewn city, but it is also very lively and exciting, and there is ancient archaeology on every street corner, so there is a great deal of charm exuding through the crumbling buildings (the modern Athenians, like their ancestors, appear to prefer to let their old buildings age and crumble rather than knock them down and build new ones!). But it's all a part of the charm, really! Athens is exciting, and I wish I had spent more time there.
As of October 2007, Monastiriki Square is completely torn up and walled off, so when you exit the station it is difficult to get your bearings to find your way to the hotel. We had to wander around for a few minutes before we pulled out our map and oriented our position. The best thing to do is, after exiting the station at the square, find your way to the other side of the square and make a right on Metropoleos and make a right. The hotel is just 2 or 3 blocks down on the right, past the section of restaurants with people trying to drag you in for a meal.
The staff and reception are, like all the other Greeks we encountered, very nice and accommodating. The hotel itself is clean, the rooms were nominally comfortable, adequately sized, and the typical European layout -- nothing really exciting, but definitely adequate for the price. Our room was on the 6th floor with a view of the Acropolis, which was really nice. You absolutely cannot beat the location of this hotel – it is worth the money, believe me. Especially if you are going to spend a few days in Athens. The breakfast is completely forgettable, but there are so many restaurant options that it doesn’t matter. There is enough to get you going if need be.
If you are looking for a decent hotel at an acceptable price with a GREAT location in Plaka (the very lively city center with tons of restaurant options and easy access to the Metro/airport), I highly recommend Plaka Hotel.
