“Good location but thats it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

This hostel is centrally located- close to the shops and local markets etc. Unfortunately that is the end of the good things about this hostel.
- When we arrived into our fully booked private room there was a random bag left in there from the previous person that stayed there. We then removed this bag out into the corridor and the receptionist knew nothing about it and assured that everyone that stayed there previously had returned the keys. After we came back from dinner we found that our room door was wide open and someone had been in our room and touched our stuff. We have no idea who it was and how they got in. The receptionist and hotel manager assumed it must of been a person that was there before us and that didnt hand their key in. This was very dissapointing as they had just informed us that no one else had a key to our room. Needless to say we did not feel safe in our room that night.
- The shower didn't drain up every time someone had a shower.
- The bathroom was old and smelly.
- We were not provided any sheets, only a bottom sheet which covered the mattress.
- Finally the "free breakfast" is a cup of corn flakes.

Veyr disappointed with this hostel, the staff were not very helpful either.

I had a pleasant time at Athenstyle. It is just near Monastiraki Square and all the shops and ages and restaurants in the area. The Roman Agora is a 2 minute walk, the Ancient Greek Agora is a 3 minute walk. The Acropolis is about a 20 minute walk through a nice part of the city. Monastiraki station is a minute away, so you can easily get around the city as well as to and from the airport.
Taxis line up at the end of the street (30 seconds away), so you get one right away if you need.

I stayed in the main building in a single room, and it was very simple, but good enough for me. They don't have a laundry service, there is an elevator, they have a free breakfast but its pretty limited, there is free wifi that works in the lobby, but I was on the first floor and it reached there.
The rooftop is awesome, a restaurant and bar, with a spectacular view of the Acropolis and the rest of the city.

Overall, a funky hostel in an awesome location

AthenStyle was a fairly horrible experience. My friends and I had stayed at a sister hostel in Rome, Alessandro Palace, and we had a very good experience there. However, AthenStyle did not meet the expectations that they advertise, and I am surprised more people do not give bad reviews of the hostel.

We stayed in a 10 bedroom all female dorm in a building adjacent to the main building. I wonder if this wing of AthenStyle is the lesser wing and if the issues we experienced would not have happened in the main building. When we arrived in the room, it was uncomfortably hot (it was about 95 degrees in Athens that day). We tried the AC and it did not work. We let the desk clerk know; she went to check it and turn it on (the hostel does not allow the remote to stay in the room). When we returned later that night, the room still felt like a sauna, and we once again talked to the desk clerk. She said the temperature "seemed fine to her" and she "didn't want to make other people in the room cold," but she turned it down a little. We went up to the roof bar, which is one of the saving graces of AthenStyle with its great view of the Acropolis, to allow the room to cool down. When we went up to the room, it still felt like a sauna. We talked to another desk clerk who also went up to the room and did nothing to fix the heat. We asked for a fan, but he said they did not have any. We spent a very uncomfortable night in the room and did not sleep much. Additionally, the bathroom was grungy and dirty, the shower had no water pressure, and there was no hot water to speak of (not that we needed it with the heat in the room).

We were not expecting fancy accommodations, but if a hotel/hostel advertises AC, they need to be able to provide it. One of my friends has a medical condition that makes extreme heat dangerous for her, so it was unacceptable for the hostel to not do more to help us out. The staff was not exactly rude, but they were not nice either, and they did not seem to care about our issue. After one night, we decided to move to another hotel because the room was just too hot and dirty. When we checked out, a new desk clerk was very apologetic and asked if we had been offered another room--we had not. She offered us a free beer on the roof deck, and we accepted. The bartender asked us why were leaving, and we explained the room's uncomfortable heat. He asked us what room we had stayed in, and we told him; he then told us that girls had complained about AC problems in that same room three days before, so the hostel clearly had done nothing to fix the ongoing problem, which is definitely a strike against the way the hostel is managed.

Again, we did not hope for fancy accommodations at AthenStyle, but we at least expected the minimum of bearable air conditioning, relatively clean rooms/bathrooms, and a staff that is more accommodating to these issues when minimum standards are not met. I would recommend that you avoid this hostel at all costs if you have these minimum standards.

Stayed here for two nights with a friend at the end of July 2013 (aged 21/22). Having stayed in a lot of hostels in the past, we were generally both very unimpressed with the standard of service offered by staff and by the standard of the dorms. We stayed in the building next door to the hostel, which can only be described as a crack den. Graffiti everywhere, syringes on the floor and generally just a mess.

We stayed in the room "Crete" which was a total disappointment. We found out very quickly that the air conditioning was so weak it was barely worth having it on. When another girl in our dorm brought this to the staff's attention, a woman walked in and said "it is not broken, it just doesn't circulate- I can't do anything."

There were also multiple powercuts when we stayed and we were told not to use our adapters in the sockets or we would be fined. Call me ridiculous, but I don't think expecting to be able to use the power to charge your mobile phone is over-ambitious. Constant powercuts proved to be a complete nightmare as it meant our doors weren't secure (it is a keycard that is used) and when I asked if we could be moved elsewhere as I didn't feel comfortable sleeping in an unlocked room, staff were unhelpful and told me it was too much of a "hassle" to move.

In addition, the bathrooms in the dorm were filthy and the shower only worked by keeping your hand on the button... Even then I question whether it was even worth having.

Internet only works in the lobby. Not a particularly social hostel either.

Breakfast proved also to be a disappointment, offering only bread, jam and watermelon. All and all a complete rip-off for 22 euros. This hostel completely ruined our last two days in Greece. The only positive I can offer would be the location.

My advice? Stay elsewhere.

This hostel was really great. The location was perfect, just around the corner from ruins, markets and restaurants. The room it self was perfect for 3 girls. Very clean and spacious with a kitchenette. The staff were very helpful and although we never got the chance to go up, the hostel has a rooftop terrace for dinner and drinks with a night view of acropolis! We only stayed 2 nights but not consecutively though wish we had.

My only criticism is that it was hot and our aircon did virtually nothing to cool the room down and that this hostel is a base point for bus-a-bout and of course these people have know courtesy to anyone else in the building, so we were awoken at almost every hour of the morning to screaming, laughing and thumping around, so if your a light sleeper good luck!

My friend and I and her 3 teens stayed for 4 nights and had a great time. Location is within walking distance to all things in old Athens including great eats, ancient sites and city life. The rooftop bar had a great view of the Acropolis. The breakfast was adequate, not great, but filling. The room was clean and comfortable and quiet with lockers and an in-room bathroom (8 person bunk room and we had it to ourselves. The AC was minimal due to their "green" policy of the AC being 10 degrees less than outside- and Athens is HOT, but it was bearable. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was a computer room, kitchen and air conditioned lobby with wifi We would stay again. Not as sure how it would be if we were sharing with strangers due to the one small bathroom for the 8 beds.

First i would like to say that i have been backpacking Europe and staying in hostels for 7 weeks now. Athens Style Hostel was not the worst, but it certainly wasn't the best. This hostel has a nice environment, it feels safe,it has running water, and is in a great location. If you are looking for a hostel that meets basic needs than Athens Style will be fine for you. On the down side, the internet here is horrendous- disconnecting every couple minutes. The bathroom was covered in mold and the air conditioning barely works. The kitchen is small, smells of rotten food, and the stove burners take a good 15-20 mins to heat up. You are not allowed to eat your own food outside of the kitchen (which would be fine if it wasn't so hot and smelly). For those staying in Athens for longer than a day and a half beware that the hostel concierge is not very knowledgeable about anything besides the main tourist sites. Id only recommend this place for people staying 2 nights or less.
