“Potential to be a very good resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

This resort has the potential to be a very good resort; however it suffers from identity crises, is it the Deva Samui the Outrigger or the Destination?

The name on the resort says Deva Samui the credit card receipt and the locals say it is The Outrigger and the towels and reviews posted on the walls say Destination. Please make it the same I am sure then that even the staff would take a bit more pride!

In its hay day this would have been a five star resort, now I can only give it a three and a half stars. It is showing its age, it needs some overdue painting and room refurbishment. The stained wood in the room badly needs to be redone, as does all the wood work, the outside rendering is fading and in places chipping. This resort is rather expensive for what it is, but do the things that need doing and yes it would represent good value for money.

The staff in general are friendly and helpful but there is a need for front desk staff to have a better understanding of English and to put a smile on when first greeting guests, first impressions go a long way. It would seem that a lot of the staff are new to the Deva and I would suggest to the hospitality industry, some are lacking the skills required for a quality resort, having said that they do appear to be learning fast.

As the Resort is some way from Chaweng Beach shopping area a more frequent shuttle service would be helpful. Give thought to free pick up and drop off at the airport, as a 450 bht fee seams unreasonable.

Would I stay again or recommend the Deva? Yes but would like to see some improvement.

well what can we say........we loved it so much last year we went again this year and most certainly will be going back next year hopefully with a few friends......on arrival we were greeted by the friendly reception staff, O,Pat, and Ju. we were early due to our flights so we went down to the restaurant and relaxed with a few drinks. we caught up with the hotels hostess , sarah, who we had spoken to on the phone from australia...... she and a few of the staff organised a welcome back message made of tiny flowers on our bed.... it was overwhelming....our room was perfect with a direct pool access from the ground floor... loved it. we enjoyed the buffet breakfast every morning with the friendly staff and the chefs....we loved that it was not in the main strip and if we wanted to go anywhere we got on a hired scooter and went where ever and when ever we wanted.... the hotel also organised a shuttle bus to markets and shopping strips....they also organised many tours that are available if needed.. we also met the new owner of the hotel who organised a beautiful private dinner on the beach for us..... she was lovely... we have to mention , again , all the wonderful staff from the ladies who made our rooms to all the staff we became friends with ,, we know all their names but so many to mention and would hate to leave any out.... they know who they are.... loved the whole experience....

Room Tip: would always choose a floor pool access room....

We (my husband and I)stayed at the Outrigger in February 2012, on a Cudo voucher which cost $790. Except we did a room upgrade which cost $300 to a ground floor suite with a swim up pool. This made our week there just amazing. We enjoyed breakky, our WiFi reception was excellent the staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed being out of Chewang, just hired a moped for trips away and sight seeing. Family Mart on the corner was very handy and closeness to the airport was excellent. Have hightly recommended to my friends and family this resort since our return home. It truly is the most memorable visit and accomadation we have had in four visits to Thailand in Three years.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and do the swim up pool option.

For the price, the rooms are very nice and the pool is great but the beach front isn't swimmable. The wifi in the rooms is a joke, such low signal, doesn't work. Only in the lobby and restaurant. Breakfast is just average and the coffee is pretty bad, perhaps Nescafé. Rooms look great at first glance, lots of windows, but there's no privacy so you must keep the thick blinds shut, creating a dark box effect. The random tacky decorations are bizarre. nice towels and sheets. There was either no hair conditioner or it was bad. Nice gym. Within walking distance to just a handful of places. Not much.

I stayed here with my boyfriend back in January 2012 when it was Outrigger (hence the nautical themed decorating) with a voucher. It was $790 for 5nts and we were very happy, though we probably would view things differently had we paid full price.
The best feature was the rooms - they were huge with a big bathroom, lounge and balcony and very clean. I LOVED the bath on the balcony with the Led lights, candles & frangipanis everywhere, which made it feel very special. The villas behind the main pool looked amazing - completely self contained with their own pool (great for a family or honeymooners).
The service we recieved was excellent, from booking via email to our contact with staff while at the resort. My boyfriend especially like the valet to park our bike for us.
The biggest downside might be the location - it isn't walking distance to any restaurants or bars and it is on a pretty uninspiring part of the beach on the north side of the island (with a small wharf/jetty right infront of the hotel). The location wasn't a big issue for us as we hired a motorbike to get around (5mins to fishermans village and 15mins to Chaweng), but might be a downside for some.
It's the kind of place to lie and sunbake, maybe take a dip in the pool - as the beaches around here are shallow and rocky. The pool bar is nice, and had some good looking cocktails and good prices at happy hour. There is another pool near our rooms if the main pools too busy (it is only small) but it doesn't get quite as much sun.
Breakfast was 5star - everything you could want - toast, fruit, pastries, omelettes made for you. Note that in Thailand you will rerely get much, if any, bacon/ham. Otherwise the restaurant and spa were very expensive - I think pretty normal for resorts (and ok when converted to $AUD), but we'd been travelling for a few weeks and were used to how cheap food is in thailand generally.
Overall it is a lovely resort, probably best tailored to people who want a short getaway at a high star-rated property and aren't fussed about nightlife or want to be away from the noise/tacky main parts of the island.

Room Tip: Studio suites are big and have the bath on the balcony.

The view from our room was glorious, which we could see from our balcony and bedroom. We enjoyed a spa bath every night after spending each day travelling around the island by their complimentary bus.The big buddha and markets were within walking distance.Breakfast was included(which was a feast to behold) you really didn't need lunch! Then when evening came we endulged in a themed banquet and entertainment, dining almost on the beach front.Experienced an amazing thai massage Aah! Probably a resort for couples rather than singles.Very friendly staff.Kophan kar (thankyou) A word used often between both staff and guests.

We stayed at Deva Samui Resort for 3 nights which we bought it via Groupon Voucher. At first, we have some difficulty to locate the resort due to the secluded area. The staff are really helpful and friendly, greeting us whenever we bounced to them in the resort. The room is clean and spacing, and the bed is comfortable enough for me to dozed off easily. The breakfast is good with variety of choice. The infinity pool is an attractive and fun area, I'm really having fun in the pool. Overall, I'm really have a pleasant stay in this resort. The only weakness for this resort is the location, you really need a transport if you wish to move around.
