“Paradise - perfect anniversary get away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

Wow! Sugar ridge exceeded our expectations! The staff were helpful, friendly and outstanding. We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary and it was the perfect place. Food at both restaurants was fresh, delicious and kept us coming back. Highly recommend the chicken cobb salad and seafood for dinner. The rooms are very clean, inviting and relaxing. Our private plunge pool is a really nice touch and nice to cool off in the heat. The views are spectacular and we enjoyed watching the sunset every night with a glass of wine right from our balcony. We are not close to the beach, but it was not a problem to get there. There is a free shuttle that takes you there in no time.

The resort has so many amenities..the pools, the aveda spa, fitness club and the best restaurants. We highly recommend you stay and we will definitely be coming back.

We sincerely thank all the wonderful staff that made our experience so memorable and special. Thanks to Marcia, Kevin, Carleen, LaToya, Von, Glaive, and many others which names we cannot remember or know how to spell.

We just returned from a stay at the Sugar Ridge Resort. As a positive, the staff for the most part were kind. Everyone was quite friendly, especially Nafuna at the front desk. We did, however, incur some problems. The hotel is not on the beach which we were aware of prior to going. They advertise that they have a shuttle, which they do. The problem is that the shuttle came late and you must sit in the truck bed of the Land Rover that they use. It is not enclosed and the safety factor of it was concerning. The shuttle driver, as well as being late, stopped to pick up a friend of his who was walking on the street while he had us and another couple in the car. I am a patient person and if we were not already 40 minutes late being picked up I wouldn't have minded so much but it truly was unacceptable.

The housekeeping in the room was a problem which we had to speak to the staff about. While the housekeeper is cleaning the room he/she leaves the doors open and when we came back the room would have some mosquitos in it. Because of the area the hotel is in, it is more prone to insect/mosquito issues than other hotels. The hotel balcony of the rooms have a plunge pool, (which is not exactly a pool). It would be a great hot tub if it had the capability of getting hot. One afternoon we were out there and all of a sudden the maintenance guy climbed over the balcony from the other room, startling us, so that he could clean the plunge pool. Housekeepers or other staff as well were an issue simply because there were no, "Do Not Disturb" signs for the doors. The other issue with housekeeping is that we had to call multiple times at first for the bathroom to be replenished with shampoo and conditioner. Finally the problem got corrected after we made a complaint at the front desk. In the room the A/C is very loud and the bed extremely hard. Probably nothing much can be done there but one should make note of it.

The other problem with this hotel is that the walk from the front desk/pool/restaurant/gym, which are all located in the same area, is pretty darn far from most of the rooms. The terrain is also uneven and the walkways are not adequately lit. We ended up using flashlights but it was quite dangerous and areas slippery when wet.

The food here was average. Breakfast was included in our plan so we ate all of our breakfast meals at the hotel. The location of the hotel is pretty secluded so in order to leave the hotel grounds you must either rent a car or pay costly taxi fares. We would like to highly recommend the small-local restaurant called "Miracles," which is located right outside the hotel grounds on the way to Jolly Harbor. The food is excellent...we had dinner there every night. Best grilled and jerked lobster I have ever had! We each had a massage and the spa was very nice and both of us had excellent massages. The service and tranquility of the spa was lovely.

This hotel is not comparable with any luxury brands I have stayed in. The hotels in Antigua are definitely very expensive so for a budget hotel it is acceptable. It is a "no-frills" property so you really do get what you pay for. We stayed at this hotel as part of a special package from a loyalty company. When I return to Antigua I would not stay here again, just not up to my standards.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the main area to avoid having to hike to your room in the dark.

Keith M, General Manager at Sugar Ridge, responded to this review, November 21, 2013
Although I was very pleased to read that you were happy with our staff and the service they provided, I was concerned to read of some of the issues you raised. I am sorry the shuttle to the beach was late in picking you up, made worse that the driver picked up a friend. Clearly, this was wrong and the matter has been taken up with Vorn the driver. Just to clarify for the benefit of other readers the Landrover has 8 seats with seat belts and although it is open there is a canvas top for shade and protection from the occasional tropical shower. Your comments concerning housekeeping leaving the entry door open when servicing your room, together with your comments relating to being startled by the appearance of the technician servicing your plunge pool has resulted in a review of procedures in this regard. I am sorry that you had to make several requests for bathroom amenities to be replenished, but am encouraged to read it was subsequently resolved. As Sugar Ridge is located on a hillside it does make for steep terrain in places, but most guests seem to consider the views more than make up for it. I was sorry to read that you chose to eat out for dinner as we have an excellent reputation for our food in both restaurants. Although, we have to respect your opinion we would not agree with your comments as to the standard of Sugar Ridge which we do consider to be and indeed has earned a reputation as a luxury product with service to match.

Sugar Ridge is a very friendly modern hotel with fantastic views over the sea and harbour. We booked this hotel through a travel agency having never had a recommendation from friends so we were hoping it would be as lovely as it looked online. The hotel is beautiful and our room was lovely with a huge balcony (the rooms with plunge pools have smaller balconies). The pools were very refreshing (you need it in that heat!) however not as big as they look on some of the published pictures.

The food is lovely and there are great little places to eat nearby.. highly recommend Perry's Pizza across the road! Carmichael's at the top of the hill is in a stunning setting with the infinity pool so you can enjoy cocktails before dinner. It's fairly pricy however the food is delicious and the wine is extremely good.. we dined up there 3 times as it was just so good we had to go back!

If you're looking for somewhere with lots to do at night I wouldn't say this is the place for you. Whilst the hotel and beaches are lovely we did expect to be able to stroll from our hotel and have bars and restaurants to choose from and there is very little around. Although, what is there is very nice.

All in all the staff made it for us, they were so friendly and welcoming!

Room Tip: Rooms 1-12 have a lovely outlook over the pool and sea, I've heard some of the rooms closer to...

We spent a week at Sugar Ridge and loved every minute. The villas at the top of the hill mean you get more exercise (or get a lift in a golf cart from reception), have great views, more privacy and quiet. We went half board and felt it was the right choice for us. Most nights we ate at Carmichael's where the food and service was excellent. During the day, many people are at the beaches of main pool below. There were only a few other people around the infinity pool at the top of the hill so it seemed nearly private (with the best views!). For lunch, you don't need to eat with many others in the main restaurant if you don't want. Carmichael's on the peak isn't open for lunch but we could order and it was brought up in a golf cart and served where ever we fancied (any table in the empty restaurant, bar or poolside). While we enjoyed all the space to ourselves, I couldn't imagine why so few others did the same. There was a wedding party setting up the day we left so we were happy the timing was just right. The only complaint I could make is the WIFI was complete useless. It was frustrating as it was promised, but mostly never worked. When it did, it was so slow that it just had to be abandoned. My complaint to the manager did bring an apology and complimentary treat (but no WIFI). It was likely a problem with the provider so not much the resort could do, but I had to wonder after a week if it EVER worked. Since Antigua is not in wine growing country, staff are generally less knowledgeable (rum is the local specialty) but we were never disappointed with the options. Now, the cocktails served from the bar next to the infinity pool were great!

Room Tip: The rooms are all the same except for location. For peace and quiet, get the slightly more expensive...

We just returned from a 10 day trip to Sugar Ridge. Overall we really enjoyed it and the staff were really good and helpful with booking a snorkelling trip to Cades reef and a jet ski for my husband. We went B&b and found that to be better value for money than half board or all inclusive. We ate in the hotel a few times which was good (Carmichaels is v pricey for what is basically gastro pub food) and sugar club offered different themes nights but only one would be open each night. We also enjoyed some of the restaurants in bolans and jolly harbour, particularly miracles opposite the hotel for amazing and fresh Caribbean food. The hotel isn't not on the beach but the hotel shuttle you to local beaches and there is a car rental place onsite if you fancy exploring the beautiful island on your own terms. A few niggles that prevent me from rating this place excellent are rather arbitrary rules about what breakfast combinations you can have, having to ask for fresh toiletries each day and I'm not sure how often the plunge pools get cleaned. One other tip would be not to pre book an airport transfer, taxis are cheaper and easier! Thanks sugar ridge for a great ten days, we hope to be back!

Nothing is more beautiful better than the views at Sugar Ridge! My wife and I have been to several islands. We had never visited Antigua, so when my brother decided to have his wedding in Antigua at another resort, we chose Sugar Ridge we did so because we like to go to places where you’re treated right. We stayed at the sugar ridge for 6 nights last week. The rooms were great overall, comfortable with all amenities, the hotel itself is well kept and maintained. The mountain top infinity pool and cabanas are spectacular. Being able to relax in the sun on the top of the mountain as you look down on the gorgeous beach and ocean were a highlight of our stay. We've told all our friends and family to go to Sugar Ridge and are already planning our next trip back. Lovely private rooms with amazing tropical plant life everywhere, beautiful pools, easy to use beach shuttle and extremely friendly & pleasant staff. I would feel comfortable recommending anyone to stay at Sugar Ridge! The Sugar Club and Carmichaels Restaurant was great. On the whole we found the staff helpful and attentive from the Jeannine (front desk), Von (shuttle service), “Cool” (taxi) ,O’Neil, Roger, “Prince” and Cordell (bartender) Kevin, the cleaning crew, Sugar Club crew was spectacular especially Carleen and Rose. Each staff member remembered us by name every day. We never waited for anything. Sugar Ridge is a Five Star Property.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have excellent views.

What a welcome change to the white wicker furniture & floral curtains we are so used to on a Caribbean island. SR has been styled very well, with all of the finesse and chic touches that you would expect on a city break in Europe or NYC.
Although the rooms are not huge they are comfortable, however the plunge pool on the terrace really is just for dipping in as it's almost non existent & very chlorine heavy.
Most of the staff on resort are very cool, happy, helpful & friendly with a willing to help in anyway you desire. At times service can be slow, especially if asking for something to be brought to your room but this I'm sure is just Antigen time and not a hotel issue...
The nightly entertainment at the Sugar Club restaurant in my view is not needed and actually forced us to order room service on the live band night as it was to loud - and seeing as I work in live music I know loud!
Overall I would highly recommend Sugar Ridge and having tried the all inclusive package for my first time ever it was well worth it.

Room Tip: The rooms with no plunge have a larger terrace.
