“Beautiful Views and Fantastic Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Sugar Ridge is a very friendly modern hotel with fantastic views over the sea and harbour. We booked this hotel through a travel agency having never had a recommendation from friends so we were hoping it would be as lovely as it looked online. The hotel is beautiful and our room was lovely with a huge balcony (the rooms with plunge pools have smaller balconies). The pools were very refreshing (you need it in that heat!) however not as big as they look on some of the published pictures.

The food is lovely and there are great little places to eat nearby.. highly recommend Perry's Pizza across the road! Carmichael's at the top of the hill is in a stunning setting with the infinity pool so you can enjoy cocktails before dinner. It's fairly pricy however the food is delicious and the wine is extremely good.. we dined up there 3 times as it was just so good we had to go back!

If you're looking for somewhere with lots to do at night I wouldn't say this is the place for you. Whilst the hotel and beaches are lovely we did expect to be able to stroll from our hotel and have bars and restaurants to choose from and there is very little around. Although, what is there is very nice.

All in all the staff made it for us, they were so friendly and welcoming!

Room Tip: Rooms 1-12 have a lovely outlook over the pool and sea, I've heard some of the rooms closer to...

We spent a week at Sugar Ridge and loved every minute. The villas at the top of the hill mean you get more exercise (or get a lift in a golf cart from reception), have great views, more privacy and quiet. We went half board and felt it was the right choice for us. Most nights we ate at Carmichael's where the food and service was excellent. During the day, many people are at the beaches of main pool below. There were only a few other people around the infinity pool at the top of the hill so it seemed nearly private (with the best views!). For lunch, you don't need to eat with many others in the main restaurant if you don't want. Carmichael's on the peak isn't open for lunch but we could order and it was brought up in a golf cart and served where ever we fancied (any table in the empty restaurant, bar or poolside). While we enjoyed all the space to ourselves, I couldn't imagine why so few others did the same. There was a wedding party setting up the day we left so we were happy the timing was just right. The only complaint I could make is the WIFI was complete useless. It was frustrating as it was promised, but mostly never worked. When it did, it was so slow that it just had to be abandoned. My complaint to the manager did bring an apology and complimentary treat (but no WIFI). It was likely a problem with the provider so not much the resort could do, but I had to wonder after a week if it EVER worked. Since Antigua is not in wine growing country, staff are generally less knowledgeable (rum is the local specialty) but we were never disappointed with the options. Now, the cocktails served from the bar next to the infinity pool were great!

Room Tip: The rooms are all the same except for location. For peace and quiet, get the slightly more expensive...

We just returned from a 10 day trip to Sugar Ridge. Overall we really enjoyed it and the staff were really good and helpful with booking a snorkelling trip to Cades reef and a jet ski for my husband. We went B&b and found that to be better value for money than half board or all inclusive. We ate in the hotel a few times which was good (Carmichaels is v pricey for what is basically gastro pub food) and sugar club offered different themes nights but only one would be open each night. We also enjoyed some of the restaurants in bolans and jolly harbour, particularly miracles opposite the hotel for amazing and fresh Caribbean food. The hotel isn't not on the beach but the hotel shuttle you to local beaches and there is a car rental place onsite if you fancy exploring the beautiful island on your own terms. A few niggles that prevent me from rating this place excellent are rather arbitrary rules about what breakfast combinations you can have, having to ask for fresh toiletries each day and I'm not sure how often the plunge pools get cleaned. One other tip would be not to pre book an airport transfer, taxis are cheaper and easier! Thanks sugar ridge for a great ten days, we hope to be back!

Nothing is more beautiful better than the views at Sugar Ridge! My wife and I have been to several islands. We had never visited Antigua, so when my brother decided to have his wedding in Antigua at another resort, we chose Sugar Ridge we did so because we like to go to places where you’re treated right. We stayed at the sugar ridge for 6 nights last week. The rooms were great overall, comfortable with all amenities, the hotel itself is well kept and maintained. The mountain top infinity pool and cabanas are spectacular. Being able to relax in the sun on the top of the mountain as you look down on the gorgeous beach and ocean were a highlight of our stay. We've told all our friends and family to go to Sugar Ridge and are already planning our next trip back. Lovely private rooms with amazing tropical plant life everywhere, beautiful pools, easy to use beach shuttle and extremely friendly & pleasant staff. I would feel comfortable recommending anyone to stay at Sugar Ridge! The Sugar Club and Carmichaels Restaurant was great. On the whole we found the staff helpful and attentive from the Jeannine (front desk), Von (shuttle service), “Cool” (taxi) ,O’Neil, Roger, “Prince” and Cordell (bartender) Kevin, the cleaning crew, Sugar Club crew was spectacular especially Carleen and Rose. Each staff member remembered us by name every day. We never waited for anything. Sugar Ridge is a Five Star Property.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have excellent views.

What a welcome change to the white wicker furniture & floral curtains we are so used to on a Caribbean island. SR has been styled very well, with all of the finesse and chic touches that you would expect on a city break in Europe or NYC.
Although the rooms are not huge they are comfortable, however the plunge pool on the terrace really is just for dipping in as it's almost non existent & very chlorine heavy.
Most of the staff on resort are very cool, happy, helpful & friendly with a willing to help in anyway you desire. At times service can be slow, especially if asking for something to be brought to your room but this I'm sure is just Antigen time and not a hotel issue...
The nightly entertainment at the Sugar Club restaurant in my view is not needed and actually forced us to order room service on the live band night as it was to loud - and seeing as I work in live music I know loud!
Overall I would highly recommend Sugar Ridge and having tried the all inclusive package for my first time ever it was well worth it.

Room Tip: The rooms with no plunge have a larger terrace.

Nothing could have been better than the views at Sugar Ridge! The mountain top infinity pool and cabanas are insanely beautiful. Being able to relax in the sun on the top of the mountain as you look down on the gorgeous beach and ocean were a highlight of our stay. My husband and I have been to 10+ islands in the area and when we decided on Sugar Ridge we did so because we don't like to go to the same place twice. Would love for there to be another restaurant on site. Food was fantastic but when staying for a long period it would be nice to have an additional option beyond the 2 restaurants. That said, everything was still good enough that we didn't leave the resort to dine elsewhere (we were not all-inclusive). Not really even a complaint - just wishful thinking for our next visit!

Room Tip: Make sure you're on the 2nd floor (only 2 total) and that you get a mosquito net! We were tip...

We stayed at the sugar ridge for 8 nights last february, family of 3 in 2 interconnecting rooms.
Rooms were great overall, comfortable with all amenities, however we did end up having to buy our own bottled water as it wasn't always provided. Not something which you expect to do for a 4 star resort. Also, don't expect to use the plunge pools on the balconies of the ground floor rooms- they're very small, and not maintained whatsoever.

Hotel itself is well kept and maintained although does lack any such ambiance or atmosphere, something which you could put down to the fact it is a relatively new hotel. 2 pools, great views at Carmichaels, only thing i would point out is that both pools are very small, more plunge style than swimming pools, which was a let down for us. On the whole we found the staff helpful and attentive apart from one blip. 2 of our party decided to use the spa, and the service we received here was appalling, the worst I have ever experienced, both beauticians were rude, blunt and quite frankly seemed as if we were a bother to them. A matter which I would be keen to follow up with the management if I didn't feel the manager Keith suffered the same such downfalls. It always surprises me when the staff/managment's people/service skills are appalling as with tourism a main source of spending, you'd think it was something they'd want, or need to at least, thrive upon. But I maintain the fact that these were the minority, on the whole we received GOOD service, waiters and grounds staff were always particularly friendly.

Breakfast was average, breads, yoghurts etc and you could order off the menu too, generally good, if a bit limited.

We made great use of the hotel shuttle, didn't always stick to an exact timetable but you're probably holidaying in the wrong place if you expect things to all run on time! This is a gorgeous island, so being at an equally great beach for 30 mins more than expected, isn't such burden!

We were on B&B, so went out most evenings, we ate a fish restaurant a few minutes walk from the hotel and also at a wonderful traditional little cafe opposite to the hotel. The harbour itself is ok!

Overall we had a great time, we really enjoyed the beaches - Crows Nest was our favourite! a really picturesque beach, with a fab little beach cafe. Always beach boys around to help with deck chairs etc.

Would without a doubt return to antigua just not this hotel.

Keith M, General Manager at Sugar Ridge, responded to this review, October 18, 2013
Thank you very much for your post . Im sorry you are so late in posting as it makes it more of a challenge to follow up with staff . We were pleased to read that you would return to Antigua but we were all very sorry to read that Sugar Ridge was not to your liking. The plunge pools are small, but are very popular especially in the summer months when it is hotter. The plunge pools are normally serviced daily, but if for some reason this was overlooked on a particular day, it could have been quickly rectified. You also remarked on the size of our swimming pools. Carmichael’s infinity pool and the Village pool are very much intended for chilling out whereas the 25 meter lap pool is for those who want some serious swimming. We have the only Aveda Concept Spa in the Eastern Caribbean and are also the only Aveda Pure Privilege resort. We therefore normally pride ourselves on maintaining a very high standard of treatment and service and I am only too sorry this was not your experience when using the Spa. We were however, all very encouraged to read that you otherwise enjoyed good friendly service in all other areas of the hotel. Thank you for making your comments known.
