“Not beach front, but perfect otherwise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

I just stayed at this property (June 2013) during my first trip to Antigua, and I loved it! I had a one king bedroom (no pool) and I purchased the package that included breakfast. Room #11.

Pros:

Beautiful modern, decor
Large rooms
Clean and pest free
Air-conditioned and ceiling fan
Free Wi-Fi
2 Free bottles of water
Aveda hair & skin care products in room
Huge workout room (with water cooler, so you're able to refill your own container for free!)
Mini-bar can serve as refrigerator
Large deck with lovely view
Beautiful pool
2 Restaurants onsite (although I only visited the Sugar Ridge Club & it was sufficient)
Free shuttle to nearby beaches daily (I even walked some days - not far, but hot)

Cons:
Not on beach (but very closeby)
Stairs - the rooms are hillside and have to climb sets of stairs to reach them (not really a bother but could be negative for some)

That's about all I can think of for cons. It is a lovely property. While many oceanfront properties have a rustic, open feel (with sand everywhere), this property was very modern, clean, and sleek. The staff was friendly and seemed helpful (I am a very low-maintenance guest so I didn't require much). In addition to the large gym, there is room for group classes and there appeared to be one class of yoga or pilates everyday. I visited the Aveda salon/spa for a pedicure and facial treatment, and it was nice. Some of the salon services were pricey, but I think the average traveler could afford at least one or two of the services.

A taxi from the airport was $24 US and takes about 30 minutes.

This was our first trip to Antigua, we did not know what to expect in terms of accommodation or how friendly the locals were.

Upon arriving we were more than pleasantly surprised. The people are marvellous. Very friendly and eager to give a good impression of their island. You'd expect hotel staff to be courteous, it's their job. But the local islanders, on the beach, in the shops and residents were all lovely.

The Sugar Ridge was an amazing place to stay. The decor was very chique and stylish. Both restaurants served wonderful food. Especially Carmichael's at the top of the ridge. The service is out of this world. We missed the managers welcome cocktail party, we tend not to attend such formal affairs... But the next morning the manager came over to our breakfast table and welcomed us personally, he'd realised that we were not there at the previous evening event and had taken the trouble to make sure we were happy..

The accommodation was also very nice. The room was clean and well appointed. Nice walk-in wet room/shower. The little plunge pool on the patio is a nice touch.

We looked at some of the other hotels advertised when we were here. We were glad that we had chosen the best as far as we could see. The only downside (for some) not for us, the hotel is not right on the beach. But this added to exclusive feel. There is a regular shuttle bus (land rover) which will take you to any one of the numerous beaches.

I'm sure that you will not be disappointed with this hotel.

Room Tip: Didn't see the rooms with a upper floor but I'm glad we chose the ground floor one with plun...

Had a wonderful week at Sugar Ridge..... The staff cannot do enough for you but are distant enough for you to have the privacy of this 5 star resort. It is very hilly however there are golf buggies on hand if you wanted to use them.
Def make sure you go to Carmichaels, have Cordell mix you up a cocktail then treat yourself to the fillet steak ..... Delicious.....

We stayed for 3 nights after earning 50,000 Pure Privilege Aveda points (over 9 years of saving up!)
The boutique hotel experience was wonderful! We loved our room, enjoyed the included breakfast very much, savor end every minute of our Aveda couples massage, and loved the staff!

A highlight was visiting with the managers at the Monday night manager's reception and mingling with guests over light snacks and strong rum punch! Keith and Kafi were great! I won a sweet bracelet in a raffle. Lots of fun to be had.

Another highlight was the hike we took with a local tour guide (Von) who wowed us with his knowledge of edible and medicinal plants, and even picked ripe mangos and other tropical fruits for us to sample on our walk. We looped around the backside of the mountain that the resort is perched upon and walked through a rural farming area, into a neighborhood in the town of Bolans, and finally to the local post office/rum runner/pharmacy/cigar shop where we bought island-made "hooch" rum for $6. :)

The pools were nice, especially the one at Carmichael's with the great view and decadent lounge chairs! The other two were smallish, but modern and very upscale. Beautiful lounge chairs made this pool a great hang out.
We loved our room... The bed was comfy, the decor was state of the art. I'm already saving up my Aveda points to return!

Our only complaint about the stay was that the location is off a busy major road. Instead of truly enjoying our balcony, we looked out over power lines and listened to loud traffic zooming by. For such a serene sanctuary, we wished for a closer proximity to the Caribbean sea and less traffic.
If you are not a fit person, this steep cliff side resort might not be the best choice.... Lots of stairs and steep inclines. However, friendly staff will happily shuttle you places if you don't mind calling on them to do so. Anytime we needed shuttling, we had someone there for us in just a couple minutes!
Enjoy and be sure to book a massage!

Room Tip: Perhaps a high room instead of a lower room would've solved our power line woes?

This is the first time we have ever felt compelled to write a review but just felt it was deserved.
We have just returned from 10 days at Sugar Ridge (end May to early June 2013) and only have praise for the hotel. This is the first time we have ever felt compelled to write a review. Our room was great with beautiful views out to the blue waters of the Caribbean. Some people may hesitate because the hotel is not on a beach but the reality is that with the fantastic free shuttle service driven by the ever entertaining Vorn you have a choice of beaches. For poolside relaxation there is a further choice of 3 locations including the beautiful infinity pool at Carmichaels. Bartenders own recipe Cocktails at sunset from the Infinity pool overlooking yachts in the harbour below, get the picture? We stayed on a Bed & Breakfast basis and tried the restaurants in Jolly Harbour but the best meals we had were at Carmichaels and the Sugar Club restaurants within the hotel.
The biggest plus for the hotel is the staff themselves. Discretely attentive staff who couldn't do enough for us and who were always happy and smiling. Too many to name but special mentions for Janine and Marcia in reception, Carleen and O'Neil at Breakfast, Jackie in the modern well equipped gym, Romeo round the pool and Keith the General Manager, the list goes on.
For a good day out try the speedboat tour round the whole Island which we booked through reception. This includes; swimming with stingrays, lunch on a deserted beach, snorkeling and of course rum punch.
If you are looking for complete relaxation and want to get used to living on "island time" then Sugar Ridge will fit the bill

Room Tip: Keep fit, do the walk for a higher room number, views are great.

I travel all over the country for a living and this has to be one of the best places I have stayed. Rooms were great with great views. All staff was very helpful and friendly and went out of their way for us. Both restaurants were great with excellent food. Carleen at the restaurant and Keith, the general manager were fantastic. Local shops with local handmade items. Short walking distance from the grocery store. If you visit Antigua, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor have a great view. The rooms on the bottom floor has a hot tub.

We stayed at Sugar Ridge for 4 nights at the start of our honeymoon.
We went for the all inclusive option, which I would highly recommend.
The facilities and options at Sugar Ridge appeal to all sorts of customer. If you want a quite beach escape then there are two within walking distance and another a short shuttle away (provided by the hotel).
If you want more of an active holiday then the gym on sight is a great way to start the day before heading out for the day.
We hired a car which is without doubt the most cost effective way of getting about to the main sights of the island (English Harbour, Nelson's Dockyard etc). Taxis were quite expensive.
Both restaurants at Sugar Ridge serve excellent food. We mainly chose Carmichel's only because of the better views from the top of the resort.
