“Go to Oceans Restarant Nearby...Amazing Food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

Sugar Ridge is Beautiful but there is so much more to explore in the local area. Take a left out of the property gates and drive or walk a short distance to the Oceans Restaurant. It has just opened and serves local seafood dishes, including live local lobster. Every dish we had was amazing and the owner took the time to meet us and share some of his passion for food. A little further up the road you will come to Darkwood Beach, the pineapple farm and a beautiful drive up to the views from Shirley Heights. Antigua is quite small and many of the attractions are not far and well worth the time.

My daughter and I had planned our four-night getaway for months, so we were really looking forward to it. Sugar Ridge is a resort without the touristy feel. The place itself is gorgeous, an open layout decorated in warm tones. We visited in October, so we knew we were taking a chance weather-wise. But even with rain on half of our trip, we have nothing but great memories. Rather than tell you about the pros and cons, I'll share celebrations and challenges.
Celebrations:
Vorn - (I'll get to the rest of the staff in a minute) He was the reason why our two rained out days were the brightest days of our vacation. Vorn knows the island like no one else, and let us experience its beauty and history in a real way. From roti and lobster to Devil's Bridge, Vorn is himself an Antiguan gem.
Sugar Ridge Staff - Everyone (with the exception of one staffer) was incredibly friendly, helpful and pleasant. They really define hospitality and go out of their way to make you smile.
Infinity Pool - Wherever your room is, make sure you get to Carmichael's to see the view and sit by the pool there. In a word, breathtaking.
Challenges:
Food - The food was OK, not terrible, not great. For what you're paying, the meals should be of better quality. If youre lucky, Vorn will take you on a trip where you can get local cuisine - awesome food for an unbelievably reasonable price.
Shower - The temperature never got warmer than warm, but the sink water could burn you. Never quite figured that out.
Plunge Pool - We were really looking forward to that feature of our room, but we didn't use it while we were there because it was pretty dingy. The pool guy came to clean it the day we left. Another head-scratcher...
Despite the challenges, I'm looking forward to a return trip!

Room Tip: The higher the better in terms of views, but the steps are steep no matter where your room.

I stayed for just one night at the end of a week sailing in search of some luxury. The rooms were clean spacious and inviting. The view from the balcony stunning. However the overarching memory of this visit was the truly exceptional staff, friendly fun and professional - a rare combination. My evening meal at Carmichaels would have done credit to many a fine restaurant in London. Would I go back? Definitely.

This was our honeymoon hotel and we could not have found a better place. Everything was fantastic, from the relaxed but yet incredible helpfull staff down to the breakfast. Dinner in the restaurant overseeing this part of the island was an incredible experience and thus became our favourite place to eat, a few hours after relaxing with a few cocktails in the infinity pool. The waiter promised the best mojito on the island... and he delivered!

Having read other reviews praising the staff: they are right. The staff absolutely makes this resort what it is, as long as you can adjust to the antiguan way of life: 'hey mon... no problem'. The sugar ridge resort sets itself apart through a personal touch. If you need anything, just ask and you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised the efforts the staff will make to sort you out.

Make sure to have champagne breakfast delivered to your apartment, as well as try the local breakfast and don't forget to order a nice white with some sushi whilst floating around in the lower pool.

We had a ground floor apartment with plunge pool. A very welcome cold pool to counter the tropical heat!

Room Tip: Although the upper floor apartments have a bath, I would always choose the ground floor apartment wi...

Dazzled by the receptionists smile, being handed a refreshing cocktail within 2 minutes and asked how we were feeling, I knew instantly we were going to love Sugar Ridge. The contemporary furnishings and crisp appearances of the very polished staff were a recipe for a great start to our holiday. We were driven to our accommodation set in the hills of the resort (not for the feint hearted or weak kneed) we were impressed with the beautiful bed, cleanliness of the rooms and the beautiful hibiscus flowers showered over our bed.

After freshening up we walked round the resort which is fab, lovely pool area, excellent quality outdoor furnishings and fab views of the sea and booked dinner in Carmichaels that evening. Beautiful location but for the money we were a little disappointed with the quality of the food. We were then informed that because it was out of season the other restaurant and bar in The Sugar club would be closed every evening. There was no central social area for the evenings. Other all inclusive guests resorted to room service some evenings and we went in search of entertainment elsewhere.

Kevin Thomas we felt was an absolute asset to the staff. He drove us to beach and picked us whenever we wanted always with a 'no problem' and a smile.

Breakfast was the highlight of our day fabulous choice well cooked but sometimes the service was a little slow.

I have to agree with another guest in that the air conditioning was deafening loud in the rooms but as it was 100%. Humidity we had to have it on. We met the manager on our first day and also received a thankyou email as soon as we had landed back in Uk.

So tips for the new Sugar Ridge Resort

- in low season close Carmichaels not The Sugar Club as when guests visit your beautiful island they want a relaxed atmosphere not stuffy as most of us felt about Carmichaels.

Pay some attention to the handrails and brighter lighting on the steps to the villas, there is an accident waiting to happen there.

Try and improve the wi-fi there were several people on business and complaining about the connection which is a must these days.

Congratulate whoever is in charge of staff training because they have done an impeccable job.

The fundamental question (which is missing on the customer questionnaire) is 'would you come back' because at the end of the day that's what you need to know.

Tips for visitors

Phone to make sure all facilities are open? We didn't know this even though we were visiting in low season.
Take tons of bug spray - we were eaten alive in the outdoor restaurants in the evening.
Be sure to get some treatments in the spa - it's wonderful - being a massage therapist myself they have some very talented staff.

Book a villa near to the reception area because the steps are steep and tiresome.

I will return if I know that all the facilities are open, it really is a lovely environment to spend your well earned break.

Room Tip: Near to the club house/reception

We stayed here in Aug 2012 and it was very nice. Not much to do, so upgrading your room is worth the money. Service was good but slow. The food was good and a "fair" price. Room Service was faster than the restaurants.
The hotel has no mini market, so buy before you get there if you want snacks in your room.
The hotel has a shuttle to take you to the beach ..... no need for a taxi to take you. If all you need is R & R .... nothing loud .... this is the place!

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can and get a room high up to get a great view.

I hate reviews that start by thanking the staff, but in this case I have to- they we the first and last impressions of the hotel and it truly makes a world of difference! So let me start with the fact that the staff goes out of their way to make the golf carts trips a breeze (left to my own i would rather walk than wait for anything, and because they were SO effecient i never made the hike)... the reception staff was wonderful (when American airlines lost our beach umbrella they volunteered that they keep one for guests!!!), breakfast service was fast ( i hate not being on the beach in the AM and they made it fast and fantastic)... and the cart drivers were darling.. how's your day, did your enjoy this or that, loaded our stuff ( and i have LOTS!!!) on without asking..so a special shout out with thanks to Dana, kevin (both of you), and the spa staff....because of you all, the service at the Hermitage looked less than impressive and we can't wait to come back in november.

OK now to the other stuff- the rooms . The beds and linens were a joy... we slept like ROCKS....the bathrooms were beautiful, toiletries were first rate, i can't imagine what anyone (seriously) wouldn't love... ice was brought up with no problem, and i LOVE that they fogged the resort...because of that i never got a single bite the entire stay.
the pool at Carmichaels was CLEAN and super beautiful... and the spa services were in line with some of the best i have ever had, and i am PICKY about massages... its actually worth going inside and leaving the beach for...a rare thing for me when i go to the carribean...thanks to you all for a lovely stay and we will see you in 11 weeks!

Room Tip: higher is better.. really!
