“Great romantic getaway boutique-ish hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Hotel was not located on any beach, but we knew this before we made reservations and rented a car at the airport for our 5 day stay, which was perfect as it allowed us to visit over a half dozen of the best beaches on the island (the best one was at Half Moon Bay). Staff are extremely pleasant from check-in to breakfast to assisting with services. Plenty of free parking. In-room free wifi is slow and temperamental, but there's an in-lobby computer with fast internet. The infinity pool was nice and quiet with few other guests. Rooms come with electronic safe, stocked mini-bar (expensive items), LCD TV's, iPod dock radio, hair dryers, and decent bathroom amenities. Rooms are clean, with floor tiles throughout. Getting ice was a problem as there's no ice machine and they put coolers out on the main walkway filled with ice for the guests but most nights the coolers were not there so we had to go down to lobby or the restaurant to get ice. Electrical outlets are the 110V North American 2-prong standard. Good cold air-conditioning in every room. Every room has a view out to the ocean. Make sure you bring mosquito spray for when hanging out on your own huge private balcony each night. There are free hotel buses to a few of the local nearby beaches but we drove ourselves everywhere. There's a full-size American style supermarket just a minute up the road in the Jolly Beach complex area. The Aveda spa was okay, but we've had better experiences at other spas on our travels. Lots of young couples at Sugar Ridge. But not a honeymoon destination hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view of the ocean. The lower level rooms have the plunge pool which didn'...

We were greeted at reception w/ a glass of refreshing juice. Our room was incredibly romantic w/ mosquito netting on our canopy bed and a private sect with our own private pool. The grounds are well kept and beautiful unlike other reviews here the staff was very helpful and wonderful to work with. Sugar club had good well priced brkfst food carmichaels resteraunt has a good view but the food at Dennis's or OJ's down the road a mile or two was much better. This hotel/resort is highly recommended by these two travelers

First and foremost the staff is what makes this place GREAT! We developed great friendships here. They are extremely friendly and helpful they will work to ensure your stay is perfect. The owner will visit the bar and carry on conversations with you for as long as you like. You would never know he was the owner. The food is great and the chefs will take the extra effort to make your meal an experience. They could not have taken better care of us. The went to great care to prepare a meal for the two of us by the pool side with candle walk way and a meal made just for us. It was just fantasic! The rooms are simple but just right for the islands. All have great views. The infinty pool at the top was never busy we even had it to ourselves several mornings The locals in town were great never pushie. We did one tourist adventure and that was the Zip line sea kayak tour. Two words Great time. We will return again and again.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Views vary by room. Room 21 was great. The bunglows at the top of the hill 58-6...

THis resort is very high class, beautiful on the inside and out. We went there for my Beautiful wife's Birthday. The food is phenomenal. The service was phenomenal. Hard to walk around the resort at night. The Beaches they brought us to were some of the bluest water we have ever seen. The only gripe I have is a Antiguan on the beach by the name of Sammi. He hangs out on Eagles Nest, and the surrounding beaches. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS MAN. He will rip you off, and if he says he won't, tell him "remember Nancy" That scumbag will remember.

We visited Sugar Ridge towards the end of May, having done a lot of research on where to stay in Antigua. We choose the hotel because of the excellent reviews on trip advisor and the value for money compared to other hotels on the island.

The hotel is very good but what made our stay was the friendliness and attentiveness of all the staff. The food at both Sugar Club and Carmichaels was excellent, the rooms are very clean and are a decent size. The hotel gym and spa were also first class. Of the three beaches, Nest is the most picturesque and you can walk there within 10 mins while Turners has better facilities.

The only negatives are small and could be improved easily. These are mainly that we could not work either the iPod dock or coffee machine (and there were no instructions) and the wi-fi in our room never worked. We also found that our minibar was never restocked with water and on a couple of occasions we had to request this more than once before it was received.

Finally, we were on the all inclusive tariff, which we think was excellent value, though the plunge pool was not worth bothering with.

In short, very enjoyable stay, great staff, good location just a few small improvements needed to give this 5 stars.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up the ridge for better reviews.

Just to explain we have stayed in quite a few All-inclusive resorts and this is the smallest.
We stayed for 10 nights for our friends 50th Birthday,we had 2 rooms. All I need to say is don't listen to those complaining as we could not fault anything, except the weather and you cannot blame staff for that.
Yes it is set up on a cliff and not on the beach, but you do get a shuttle run via Vaughan(he's great)to 3 different beaches,we visited Gibsons & Nest,Nest was our favourite. We ate at both beaches and the food was good,Nest was just a bit better, but that's a personal thing.
The rooms were nice we had King plunge pool rooms & couldn't fault them, the rooms had a seaview.
The quality of the food was excellent, there is a good choice at the Sugar Club Restaurant & up at Carmichael's,both had specials of the day which you must try.I still think my Favourite dishes were the coconut shredded shrimps & the Crab lump Cakes. So much of the food is pepared in-house,the soups, bread rolls, pizzas and they've started to make their own jam.As mentioned we went AI and it was definately worth it.We ate at Carmichael's quite a few times, yes there are supplements for certain dishes, but not all and it isn't much for what you are getting.
Their is a good range of drinks available and quite a few decent brands are included,Jack Daniels being one which is normally a premium at other resorts.
If ever we had to ask for anything it was never a problem and the service was quick, you sometimes build up for a little wait as we have experienced before at other resorts in the Caribbean and it would be done, not that we were ever in a rush as we were just relaxing, and you certainly do that here.
The Aveda Spa is really good & visited it a few times, never used the gym but it seemed popular.
Keith is the General Manager and he comes round to get to know the guests, very approachable.
All the staff were great, you do get a few characters and those stay with your memories, they are a few quiet staff but they were just as helpfull.
There is a lovely infinity pool by Carmichael's giving you lovely views, drinks are served from 3pm,but you can get a drink beforehand if the staff are present.
There are mosquitos & the hotel do go around spraying, just take some OFF repellant with you if you suffer.
We visited Nelson's Dockyard again and went back up to Shirley Heights for the views, both worth a visit.
I could just go on,if you do like Hot Sauce then the Head Chef Marvis(who also likes to meet guests) makes a great sauce, you have to ask for it,highly recommended.
If you want to ask me any questions please feel free to and I'll try and help.
Overall it is a wonderfull resort, and wonderfull Staff who really make a difference,we will definately return.

The Sugar Ridge is a classy yet practical resort located on the West side of the island of Antigua, 30 min drive from VC international airport. We really had a great stay at the resort! The highlights were its location, the large and beautiful room and the great service.

I thought the food (Sugar Club) was very good for an all inclusive. We particularly liked the mahi mahi (available on the seafood nights only) and the sesame seeds crusted tuna (available every day, lunch and dinner). The desserts - the pineapple bread pudding in particular - were very good and worth trying.

As I mentioned, the service was very attentive: we stayed at the Sugar Ridge with our young daughters and the staff were really patient and tried to accommodate all our needs and wishes.

Our room was large and had a view as great as the one enjoyed from the celebrated Carmichael's Restaurant.

If I had to find something wrong with the Sugar Ridge it would be the AC which was a bit noisy for my taste. But I am probably a bit too sensitive to noise. As for the Sushi menu go for the sashimi, the sushi rice they used when we tried sushi was so sweet we couldn't finish our rolls.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the rooms in the last cottage at the end of the path. It was really quiet and th...
