“Outstanding view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

This pousada has an unbelievable view of the Portuguese coastline. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Be sure to check out the ruins of the Iron Age village that found as you approach the entrance to the hotel.

I’ve been there during a work trip (2 days) and has a great view.
Nice beds!
Really quiet and refined. The staff is gentle very professional.
I advise this hotel to have a good experience around Viana.

I had a room facing the Santa Luzia church, a true heaven. The service is absolutely a 5 stars, the beds are incredibly comfortable, the breakfast buffet is delicious, and the hotel facilities are well mantained.

Room Tip: get a room facing the church

Where do I start to praise this hotel? The view is MAGNIFICANT! The staff were PERFECT. The food was FIRST CLASS. I had absolutely NO complaints about anything in the hotel and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting something special without breaking the bank.

Never stayed at the Hotel as we have a home nearby, but love to eat here each time we visit. The service is excellent, restaurant and bar areas are early modern in a typical slightly faded bygone Portuguese way, and is very clean and nicely decorated. It is not very busy as Portugal is suffering due to the Financial situation and the Hotel is quite expensive. The menu is limited (again due to lack of visitors) but we always manage to find something good. If steak is on, my Husband usually has this, it is cooked in the room and served with a wonderful brandy sauce and the potato and veg of the day. I usually go for Lombo de Porco, which is a beautifully tender pork tenderloin again with the veg of the day and usually comes with an apricot sauce. They often have a buffet for appetizers and desserts or you can choose a la carte. Some reviewers have complained about the service ( that the staff don't speak English) true, some of the staff don't (the manager does!) but for heavens sake you are in Portugal not England, take a dictionary with you or have the decency to learn a few basics in Portuguese. The views are wonderful daytime or evening and we think it is quite a romantic place, we sometimes have desert outside or taken in the bar with an aperitif. slightly behind the times but it is Northern Portugal, not yet spoiled by mass tourism, so we happily excuse what some reviewers complain about and give a definite thumbs up!

Neat location on top of the hill. This pousada is an old hotel and feels like something out of a grande tour story. We went in November and so had a choice of rooms and can negotiate (within reason). We got a room on the corner with the river out of one window and the sea out of the other. The river view also had a fantastic view of the basilica. Pretty basic room as far as pousadas go (which is nice but not over the top - some pousadas have more spectacular rooms), but the views are amazing. Restaurant is spacious and tasty. Great service in the the restaurant. Because we were there off season, there was only one table of diners at dinner.

Room Tip: Request a corner room so that you can have views of both the river and the sea (and the church).

We had a second floor room, overlooking the rear of the Santa Luzia Basilica, and with great view from our small decks to the downtown area, the port and even to the Atlantic coast beaches, south of Viana. The room was very comfortable, the location so peaceful, and after a few trips up and down from/to town, the narrow access road was no problem. Very efficient and helpful staff. Good food in the restaurant.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Basilica and downtown - fabulous views, even when it's clouday, and the...

The Pousada de Viana do Castelo, Santa Luzia, built in 1918, is fruit of the remodelling of the old Santa Luzia Hotel, maintaining the impressive characteristics which set it apart with the high majestic granite walls and the wide archways. A few hundred metres from the city stands the Mount Santa Luzia, dominating the metropolis and the Lima estuary up to the Atlantic, where our eyes are fed by the luxurious panorama. There lies the Pousada de Viana do Castelo, offering its guests from the moment they arrive, a magnificent view of the city which according to history has been occupied since the remote Mesolithic times; testimonies state numerous archaeological findings from the pre-Roman citadel. Viana do Castelo offers a superb panoramic view. It's a tourist city for its excellence, where perfect harmony of progress and wealth meet, a true living museum of ethnography and folklore. The heritage of Minho has a unique richness, with striking landscapes, churches, convents and beautiful palaces. The feast in honour of Our Lady of Agony, which runs from the 17th through to the 20th of August, stands out as the most colourful of Portugal.
