For the price this hotel is fair value. The rooms are tidy, comfortable and a good size. The pool is great as long as you get up early to claim your sun lounger with a towel ( i hate this practice!).

Whats missing? Service - surly bar staff and abrupt reception staff (I suspect over worked and under paid). Very average food.

At the price paid the access to Povoa de Varzim and the pool mean that this is fair value as you can eat out at lots of good restaurants along the sea front as well as hit the beach in front of the hotel. Just don't expect the four star wow factor as you will be disappointed!

We stayed here for a week. The room was clean and tidy if rather bare. The food was Ok but not much variety. They seem unable to cope with large numbers of guests. For example on our first night the hotel was full (400 guests) and only one line/guy serving soup. We tried leaving dinner until later the next night but the food was tepid and most of the sweets had gone. Get down to dinner early and tolerate the crowds. Not much to do near the hotel, just a windy beach, not a problem for us as we were out most of the time. Pleasant if inexperienced staff.

Room Tip: Request a sea view.

We recently stayed in this hotel for one night. My parents were staying there on a package holiday and we joined them I found booking directly with the hotel group was cheaper than using discount sites, especially as I paid for the cheapest room and on arrival was up graded to a family room with sea view and balcony. The hotel was well organised and the rooms well fitted and spacious. Although the food was a buffet it was good. There was a good selection and it was freshly prepared. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. My parents stayed in this hotel for 6 days and really enjoyed their stay. The swimming pool was good and the hotel is virtually on the beach, through a gate from the garden and you are there. There was plenty of parking in the hotel grounds.
There are plenty of interesting places to visit in the area including, of course, Porto which is well worth a visit especially if you enjoy port wine!
If you are looking for a quiet non tourist centre where you can mix with the Portuguese people and enjoy a good hotel, this is the place for you!

We stayed here for a conference my husband was attending. We should have done our own research and picked our own hotel. Our room on the 11th floor did not overlook the beach or the swimming pool, but instead the parking lot. I tried to upgrade our room after we arrived, but there were no rooms to be had. The woman at reception acted annoyed we didn't like our room, as it was one of the recently refurbished rooms. The dung coloured paint, even the ceiling was covered with it made the room seem even smaller. There may have been things to do in Povoa de Varzim, but you wouldn't know from the hotel staff, as they seemed to go out of their way NOT to be helpful. The lady at reception, who we nicknamed 'the prison warden', even made a huge deal out of giving us two room key cards. The food was inedible. They even ruined orange juice. Most of the clientele at the time we stayed were with over 60s packaged tours. I don't have anything good to say about the hotel, except some of the bar and catering staff were very nice.

Room Tip: If you choose to stay here, request a room with a balcony that overlooks the beach.

A few words of praise in favour of the Axis Vermer Hotel and our tour operator, Newmarket Holidays in the UK.during our stay from 10-17 June 2013.
We had a recently refurbished room with a balcony on the 12th Floor overlooking the beach and the seaThe accomodation and view were superb, the food and service excellent and although we were on a half board basis with buffet meals catering for about 400 guets, my partner`s dietary requirements were freshly cooked with a minimum of delay.
Staff at all levels were polite and attentive and the Maitre D ensured everything in the restaurant was as smooth as a precision watch.
I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone wishing to use it as a base from which to tour the many historical placed close by.
Opporto is only a 50 minute metro ride away and well worth a visit.
As for our tour operator, extremely good value which was inclusive of 3 sightseeing trips within the area.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the upper floors and well worth paying slightly more for a balcony/seaview

Just back from a 1 week holiday at the Axix Vermar. Room was clean and adequate for our needs. Some people had free tea and coffee in rooms so we asked and got it too. View of the beach from balcony but sadly didn't use balcony due to chilly winds. Remember we are talking about mid-June and the wind was enough to blow you over. Rain and cold winds on 1st day and each day thereafter was dry but not warm enough to use pool.

Food was adequate but often not hot enough. Meals were pretty much the same every day. Would have loved a fried egg or omelette or pancake for breakfast but it was rubbery scrambled eggs, streaky bacon and tinned sausages. How I longed for some mushrooms and grilled tomatoes too. There was also cereal, fruit, bread, cakes etc though.

Evening meal never varied. It was ALWAYS a pasta dish, fish and a choice of 2 meats (usually pork or turkey/chicken) but the veg was never hot enough. Plenty of salad available and soup (ALWAYS veg every single night) but it was OK. Desserts were fresh fruit or a variety of spongey cakes. Never saw cream, creme fraiche or icecream all week which would have made a pleasant change.

There was no entertainment whatsoever - we did see a keyboard but no player. Too cold and windy in the evenings to go for a walk because we didn't bring coats so we sat around and had a drink and then went to bed early. That was all there was to do and we did miss an evening walk.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and if we needed anything we found the staff helpful. Just felt the samey food and it not always being hot enough let it down. Some nights there was a huge queue for food and this was also a bit off-putting but we managed. I'd score this hotel and facilities 7/10.

Situated amongst a concrete jungle. Cross between E Berlin & Famagusta!
Buffet meals were okay but quite mundane.
Rooms clean but small.
Pay extra for sea view, otherwise car park & bland concrete are all you get to look at.
2 miles to Metro ( for Porto ) as nothing going on in locality.
Had to rely on organised trips to see anything of note.
Would I/we book again? No

Room Tip: Pay extra for sea view, a must!
