“Good hotel centrally located.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2009

The Fenix Porto is a very nice hotel. Stayed only for one night with work colleagues, but enjoyed very much. Rooms are clean an spacious. Attentive and friendly staff. My colleagues also enjoyed it.

We were to stay here 3 nights, then visit Braga, but we loved the hotel and loved Porto so much we stayed for 8 nights instead. The Fenix considers itself to be 4-star, but it feels 5-star in every way. The price was great for value received, including a huge buffet breakfast. Location was super, next door to an upscale shopping mall and a couple of blocks away from a park and the Casa da Musica. Walking 10-20 minutes would bring us to the "old" Porto or to wonderful parks. We're anxious to return to Porto and to this hotel.

We checked into this hotel for two days and instantly the service seemed a bit under-par. The staff there did speak slightly better English than in Lisbon, which (maybe it's just me) seems to be the case in Porto, but are not very friendly. Even when calling from the train station for directions, they proved unpleasant.

Our room wasn't quite ready, so we had lunch at the Bom de Succeso mall which is right nxt door. This proved to be helpful during our trip.

Once we got into the room, it was quite average. The wood fixtures were aging, there was no decor to speak of, and the furniture was sparse and not well thought out. The bathroom wasn't as roomy as those we experienced in Lisbon, and felt a bit dark, although not horrible. The storage space wasn't too abundant, although it was somewhat comparable with other hotels in Portugal. The room itself wasn't at all tiny, but the carpets were thin and cheap and I felt like I was in a basement more than a nice hotel, with a tiny window in the corner. The bed wasn't comfortable at all, and I wound up with bug bites the first morning. The real issue with the hotel was it's cheap-looking, dark nature. The hallway to our room was quite dank. The lobby of hotel seemed plastic-y, with the obviously fake stone and other touches that made it look cheap.

We did get a breakfast included, which wasn't bad. Overall, the big problems with this hotel are its staff, of whom we could only seem to find one helpful, pleasant person out of 4 or 5 people, and the decor. I don't have to have a great ambience, but I don't want to trip on the way from the elevator to my room.

If you're looking for a somewhat inexpensive hotel in a decent location, this might be for you. It is located about ten minutes from the Casa de Musica metro stop, which is a piece of cake to get to from anywhere. It's once you get off at the stop that proves confusing, including which way to walk, and how to find the hotel's street on the nearby roundabout. Once you figure that part out, it's not too difficult. You would then walk the opposite direction into town, which isn't exactly a short walk (nor certainly an easy one to figure out), but we like to walk, so we didn't complain. Just make sure you have a good map handy if you plan to walk anywhere.

Bad service, marginal rooms, and a location many would have trouble figuring out. I stayed in a couple great hotels in Portugal; this wasn't one of them.

The room was astonishing, exceptionally large and comfy. The bed was the best ever.
The location was not central but since the city centre felt a bit dodgy we were pleased to stay in a residential area.
the hotel had a parking charging 10euro per day.
On saturday at th bar there was a bossanova concert which was delightful.
The breakfast was very good and with a variety of food.

We stayed at Fenix for one night. The hotel is ok, may be not 4 stars (need refurbishment) but clean and good value for the money. Also, convenient as location -4 minutes by tax to Ribeira. The breakfast was also good.

I'm not too picky with hotels and have stayed in even a few 2 star hotels and never had any major complaints... but this hotel was very disappointing.

I knew about the 1970s decorating from the other reviews, but overall, the reviews were positive so I thought it would be pretty nice. But from the moment we checked in it was one disappointment to another:

- They assumed we wanted a smoking room and put us in one
- When we asked for a non-smoking room they were pretty cold about it (until we spoke in Portuguese). The non-smoking room they gave us was a room with no view, just a wall behind the window.
- When asked to change the room with one with a view, since we were staying there for 3 nights, they were very cold and openly expressed their frustration.
- Many of the staff only speak Portuguese. If you speak in English they're not very responsive. They were far more helpful when spoken to in Portuguese. My partner had to do most of the talking this being the case.
- Everything looks and smells old! The air is stale and left me feeling sick. The furniture looks like something taken from your great-grandmothers house and the beds were stiff.
- If you want ice, you have to go to the bar, but the bar only had one bucket to spare..... so they hesitantly gave me ice in a small cup....
- If you ask for an iron, they will not give you one, for safety reasons. They told us to go to the laundry room and pay them to iron our clothes, but they close early.... so then they told us to go the mall next door to get it done there! Wow, great service!
- The shower head is not a shower head. It is an extension of the tap so taking a shower is not comfortable.
- The keys to the room suddenly stopped working in the middle of the night. When I went to the front desk, no one was there and I had to wait around for several minutes.

The only thing I really enjoyed was:
- The breakfast is good and has a lot of selection
- The rooms are huge! I think they were originally made as suites with kitchens as the backsplash tiles and oven fans are still in the rooms

I probably just came across as a snob, but this was a very unpleasant experience and I hated staying here. Perhaps if they were just a little more friendly and helpful it would've made it better.

Very large triple room, comfortable beds, very nicely decorated. Front desk very helpful. Breakfast was fabulous, so many things to choose from. Quite a walk to the historical center, and the river, however. 5 minute walk to the metro station (Casa de Musica). Shopping mall and grocery store next door. Restaurants in the area tended to be pricey, but did find an excellent one - Rotunda - at the roundabout/plaza.
