“If price is low...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Old furniture in rooms... Slowest elevator, I had seen... Workers who don't know to read (If I hang "Don't disturb", please "Don't Disturb!", "Don't get into my room!"...)... Very light breakfast and dinners... I don't know prices of other hotels in Porto, but if you will not spend time in Hotel, then preferable just for sleep... (Don't try to work via Wifi, because it is accessable just near door...)

I went for the upgraded Privilege room on the next to top floor. This is supposed to be larger than regular rooms, and as it really wasn't that big, I would certainly opt for the upgrade (only a few euros extra). My view was open, but not spectacular. Wrong side for the ocean which might have been nicer.
Wifi was excellent. Room was clean, although bathroom shower a little hand-held-basic. Breakfast was adequate with items quickly replenished.
There didn't seem to be any restaurant open in the hotel.
Front desk service was excellent: friendly, informed, helpful.
The hop-on/hop-off buses run through an adjacent street, a 48 hour ticket is a good investment. There were always taxis outside the hotel, but often finding a taxi to get back was not so easy.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view

The staff is fine, very helpful. Sushi-bar waiter very helpful too. The bedrooms are very wide. The hotel is very close to "Casa da Musica" (Porto Music Auditorium) and very well connected to main underground and bus lines. Good and cheap restaurants nearby. BUT:

- Some rooms (specially the ones opposite to the elevator) are very noisy. I asked to get a more quiet one (there was no problem).
- The bathroom was a bit neglected, the WC cap was broken.
- The breakfast is too limited, tetra-brick orange juice, non 0% fats yogurt and/or milk, bad quality marmalade, not a good wholemeal bread for toasts.
- Only two elevators
- Overall, is a bit neglected hotel from the nineties.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the elevator

I was looking for a "family-friendly" hotel, for the first time, as this was the first hotel experience with a baby (my son is 2 months old now).
I did the reservation via bookings.com and asked for a crib, which was in the room as we checked in. Sheets and lateral protections, everything a crib needs, was in place. The room matched the pictures online, which is rare, so we were pleased. The room had a lot of space, which is nice. The staff was very friendly. And the TV, even if we didn't watch a lot, had a lot of channels with series and movies, also a nice surprise.
During the reservation I didn't pick breakfast, but I added later on, as €4 per pax with a buffet like breakfast (lots of options) seemed really good value for money.
We left the car in the parking, mainly due to the logistics of a baby, otheriwse would probably try to park the car outside and spare the extra cost.

The eighth-floor family room we had was clean and spacious with a good view across Porto to the sea. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet fairly extensive. The service was very good, but it is the location of this hotel which really singles it out. A 10 minute walk from Casa da Musica Metro station and right next door to Shopping Cidade, a small-ish shooping mall with a good foodcourt - ideal for travellers with children since it offers Portuguese food alongside Pizza and McDonald's among others, all day. Avoid the restaurant right opposite though, unless it is for a small snack, drink or cake.

Every time I go to Porto with friends we tend to choose the same hold Tuela. (from the same group and just around the corner from Fenix which I’m reviewing). But this time the price on Fenix was better so we gave it a try.

It’s a bit old fashioned, but it’s quite reliable. It has a nice quality/price, clean, good location, and 3 single beds p/ room. That is really hard to find.

I haven’t really noticed any difference between the Tuela and the Fenix.

We've got very nice and spacious room on 11th floor, with views over the city and ocean. Hotel is very modern, everything works, fast Internet connection, good breakfast - maybe not outstanding, but good. Location is also good, but a bit far from city centre. Reception staff is very friendly, you can feel they are trying hard to make you happy. Secure garage is available, some people complained it is too expensive, but comparing to other cities, 14 euro per day is not much.
I can't really think about anything worth complaining.

Room Tip: Get room above 6th floor, higher - better, views are amazing.
