“Ridiculously Overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

The decor is wonderful in this old castle and the service in the restaurant was good. The food is blend, pretty much tasteless and completely overpriced. Pasta (and a very small portion) that did not taste anything special with 3 shrimps for two digits! I had a soup as a starter, the typical Portuguese "Cale Verde", had much much better at other restaurants for 4 times less.
Only reason I gave it more than one, is the decor and the service. For the food, go somewhere else.

“Lunch in an 18th Century Baroque Palace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

The view, if you get near a window, is breathtaking. The Palace itself is a fascinating piece of architecture, especially when considering that the hotel portion of Pousada (meaning high-class inn) Palacio do Freixo, and located next door, was once a flour factory. Though much of the original art and interior design of the Palace has been re-done and can have a bit of a tacky mixed with classy feel, the restaurant was comfortable and modern.

Since we went during the yearly 'Porto Restaurant Week' and ordered off of a fixed price menu, it's a bit hard to judge the food on the regular menu. However, I do believe in consistency and fixed price or not, I'd expect the quality to be similar every day of the year. What we did have was generally good. I've rated this restaurant as very good, but I would have preferred a 'good' option. The food was above average, but below very good.

Our appetizers, smoked duck and a tomato and cheese phyllo parcel, were very tasty. My husband's black pork main dish was tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. My salmon was slightly over-cooked and desserts were sweet, but enjoyable.

I think it's a nice option in Porto, perhaps not the best, but you can't beat the history, the architecture (if you're a buff) or the view.
