“Quirky Independent Hotel in the City Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Although this hotel isn't a 5 star palace, it certainly has charm and personality and the location is great. There is no parking, but they offer a voucher for a lot down the street (15 Euros per 24 hours). The rooms are tiny, but you aren't supposed to spend a whole lot of time there anyway, so why do you need something massive? They have an elevator if you have heavier bags, and the breakfast buffet is decent. They served cold cuts (meats), an assortment of cheese, quiche, eggs rolls, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and more. It wasn't piping hot, but there was still plenty to choose from, and we left full. For the price, this place was very decent. It has antique decor and furniture placed throughout, as well as a reading room with lots of helpful information in every language. Don't expect luxury and you won't be disappointed. Friendly multi-lingual staff.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't sleep next to a family with children because the walls are kind of thin.

What do people expect for their money!. Centrally located, quirky, unique, character, excellent breakfast in a superb breakfast room. Plenty of hot water, clean sheets & towels every day. May not be the biggest rooms but who lives in a hotel room unless you are a 'travel hermit' Service whether front desk, room cleaning or breakfast room first class. Here for New Year in a front room & yes it was noisy & hectic but it was New Year. Imagine could be a problem in Summer as no A/C & balcony windows have to be opened to allow a breeze, but nothing a few glasses of Port cannot put right!

Room Tip: Believe rear rooms quieter but cannot comment

By entering Grande Hotel you jump into the history of this Old house and you are treated as if you would be a permanent guest.
Professional reception attendance, renovated rooms, every angle of the hotel deserves your attention before a pantagruelic breakfast buffet in a 19th dining room.Nice garden with good views of Porto.

Very obviously not a chain hotel. A great feel of the old fashioned splendid townhouse hotel it once was. Very touching and quirky displays of past peoples and equipment used (including toilet seats !). Great breakfast in fabulous dining room. Bedrooms adequate. Can be very noisy in the frontrooms over the street with late night revellers. Well worth the experience.

Room Tip: Rooms at rear can have balconies and have town views.

The hotel is the oldest in town and it feels so, and mostly in the good sense. The breakfast room is beautiful (and so is the breakfast itself), the character makes feel everywhere, especially in the small details, in the grande staircase, the high ceilings, the wooden floors (or were they wooden, well, doesn't matter even if there was carpet, the feeling is like they are all wood). Very nice feeling, indeed.
However, don't wait for perfection, after all it's a 3 star hotel, and you see that here and there some repair is needed, bathroom amenities are not perfect (and neither is the size of the bathroom, even if this might have been the case with my room only, the other ones I have seen were larger), and wi-fi is only available on the ground floor (this is supposed to be change, according to the manager).
Overall, a very nice place, and at such a low price in such prime location, it well meets and exceeds the expectations.

Centrally located in the hilly old town near all the main city attractions and good restaurants. A lovely old hotel, good service, gorgeous public areas. The bedrooms are a little dated but functional with a balcony, great shower and lovely city views. A delicious breakfast spread is offered with plenty of choice. Very good value.

Room Tip: Floor 3 was very quiet at night with good views.

The Hotel is something of a Tardis. A small entrance which opens out as you explore further.

We stayed for three nights. The first two nights we had a room at the front (street) side and found the noise from revellers excessive - the second night the noise did not subside until 5:00 in the morning. However, we asked for a transfer to the back of the hotel for our last night. This was done without any fuss.

The breakfast menu was extensive and we could easily have enough to get us through to mid-afternoon. we also discovered that they have a "happy hour" which lasts three hours.

Pros. Location - only a few minutes walk to the city centre and about 15 minutes walk to the Ribeira area. It is also close to the nearest Metro station. the breakfast is good. The staff are helpful. The cost is also very reasonable - only 140 euro for three nights.

Cons, The rooms are quite small and those on the street side noisy.

Room Tip: Avoid street site rooms
