“Good choice for dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

This part of town is very nice. You can see the bridges and the river well illuminated. Very good restaurants around. Very nice walk.

“A living monument with people inside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

The area near Douro river is one of the most genuine places you can find in Portugal. It is some sorte of a monument that keeps running its daily life like many centuries ago.

“Good for relaxation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

It is still a small strip. Although a tourist location. It is not a tourist trap. The food was good and the prices are fair. Enjoyable.

“The bridge makes it all work somehow.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

We walked down from the Boa Vista area to the riverside on the day of arrival and were instantly drawn into the charm of the place. The main road by the river is usually heavy with traffic but the long walk by the River Duoro includes a raised walkway over the river bank safe from harm. Not a pretty walk but interesting to see the old three storey houses. Elsewhere in the world this would certainly have been developed into a fashionable district by now. The real "Riverside" area is near the Louis bridge and this is a little over commercialised with trinket stalls and lots of touristy restaurants and a few buskers.
We liked the little local café bars off the riverside best but succumbed to the convenience of the food outlets more than once and were not disappointed but then not particularly impressed either.
There are several ways up to the town including some steep energy sapping steps and some less steep local roadways (avoid the tunnel it's horrible). It's the Louis bridge that draws your attention as you sit gazing out across the river - it makes the whole thing work somehow.
