“excellence, quality and charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

a year later this beautiful Pousada has preserved its great quality. A pleasure to return to. This time I had a chance to experience the indoor pool. very pleasant with heated water and lounging chairs. Both sauna and turkish bath perfect. Buffet breakfast with variety and lovely fresh fruit. And the splendid view from the dining room over the Douro river.

Stayed at Palacio do Freixo for 4 nights.
The hotel has two parts next to each other the old palace where you find the common areas and the accomodation building ( seems also historical - old industrial facility magnificently adapted to function as a hotel.)
Had Suite 200.
Rooms: large, confortable, modern decoration, all that is required from a 5* . Bathroom on the small side. Had a balcony with great view but from what i saw most rooms only have windows ( still they have the same river view - at least most of them.)
Breakfast: standard for a 5 *... which is pretty good.
Location: the view comes with a price: the hotel is located a bit far from the City centre... nothing that 10€ taxi won't solve.
The common areas are simply wonderful, both outdoors and indoors ( nice indoor pool).
staff: very nice and helpful.
All in all a fantastic stay and an hotel I highly recommend.

Wow, what a beautiful Pousada. We stayed just one night on the way from Lisbon to Baiona and were relieved at how easy it was to find on the outskirts of Porto (just need to get the right motorway bridge over the river!) So glad we chose it though. An absolutely stunning building with wonderful views from the terraces over the River Douro. Our room in the annex was large, contemporary and luxurious. The pool terrace and bar, and gardens are gorgeous. Not the right place if you want to be in the middle of Porto, but great for a stopover, or as a base to explore the Douro valley and countryside alongside a city break. We got the impression that it is often busy with various events - a Vinho Verde producers conference, and a Japanese TV crew were in residence when we were there, with a Volvo agents' meeting due the next day! But we enjoyed the buzz, and the hotel is large enough to cope. Only small criticism was the lay out of the breakfast room. Beautiful, but the buffet is set out where everyone queues, and a lack of staff meant people were having to wait to be seated whilst others had to push past to choose their breakfast items - an unexpected bit of inefficiency in a hotel that seemed to be running very smoothly everywhere else. This certainly did not put us off one of the best hotels we have stayed in over the past couple of years.

We stayed at this Pousada 2 nights... a perfect ending to our 15 day trip to Portugal. Our room was a large corner room overlooking the Palace section, the parking lot and hills behind which was fine as we didn't spend much time in the room. Being the largest Pousada that we stayed at on our trip, things seemed much busier here at breakfast/dinner than other places we stayed(reservations recommended for dinner). We were there on a weekend which might explain that. We were advised not to drive downtown, not that the driving itself was a problem but parking would be. Taxis to the Ribeira or upper town were reasonable, ~ 6 euros. We had a disappointing lunch at one of the many sidewalk restaurants along the Ribeira... seemed like preformed battered (frozen?) fish sticks & calamari instead of fresh grilled we thought we'd be getting here....assumed all these places that seemed busy would be good... bad decision. Lots to see & do walking around town but lots of hills. Took Yellow Bus tour mainly to get to Matosinhos to experience the seafood restaurants there for lunch (used Yellow Bus tickets from Guimaraes for 25% discount).... this route runs only every hour so was a long wait till we got the bus, the pre-recorded tour was ok/earbuds worked ok and the views interesting. Matosinhos was quite the experience with all the seafood restaurants grilling fresh fish right on the street... amazing smells. We just picked one of the many places along the street where the bus dropped us off. We enjoyed grilled salmon steak (large portion) and tender grilled calamari along with some house vinho verde, plus cover and appetizer cod cakes (good) for under 40 euros for 2. After lunch we walked along the beach area to the South and caught the tour bus again taking us back to downtown Porto.

Had one dinner downtown Porto at a modern multi-level restaurant across the plaza from the MacDonalds and where the bus tours left. Had the final dinner of our trip in the Pousada dining room... was very enjoyable. Very good food and service. Front desk staff at the pousada were very friendly and helpful. The Palace building (reception, dining rooms, bars/lounge areas) is so beautiful. Lovely pool area with pool bar... nice place to enjoy a late afternoon drink watching the sun go down and boats go by.

I didn't really know what to expect from Porto as I was on a group weekend and had not really researched the city. However there was no disappointment as both the city and the hotel were fantastic.
The only minus point was that when we returned from a day out our room had not been cleaned but this was resolved very quickly after a phone call.
Both indoor and outdoor facilities were wonderful and the breakfast was amazing - even for a fussy vegetarian like me!!
Absolutely recommend the city and this hotel in particular.

The Freixo Palace was built in 1742 and converted to this luxury hotel in 2009. The reception, dining room, lounges and meeting rooms are all in the old palace and the bedrooms are in a converted flour mill adjacent (painted pink). The bedrooms are finished to a high standard and you soon get used to taking the lift to floor zero, walking across to the old palace and up to floor 1 to reception and the dining room. It is situated with stunning views on the banks of the Douro River a little way out of the old town of Porto which was no problem for us as we had our own car but may be a problem for others. Breakfast and dinner were good but the place was very busy (in October) and we felt the staff were a little pushed to be friendly.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the river.

I had originally booked into the Pestana in the old town but due to an administrative error on their behalf we were moved to the Palacio. I had looked at it originally but had been put off by the fact that it was out of the old town centre. I needn't have worried. It was stunning. Yes if you want to go in and out it is a drive (either a hire car or a taxi) but if you book tours (as I had done for the group of 6 of us) then we were met at the hotel and returned there).

The surroundings are amazing. The old palace is beautifully maintained and houses the reception, bar and restaurant with a multitude of meetin rooms. The formal gardens are small but stunning and the outside pool and bar designed to fit in well with the surrounding area. The bedrooms are very modern and tastefully done in the restored flour mill next door.

The staff, especially those on reception, were charming, polite and fun. Would I go back - absolutely. Would I recommend it - this is what I'm doing now.

Room Tip: Ask for one over looking the river - it's beautiful
