We were in Porto for 3 days during a 2 and a half week trip in Portugal with my sister-in-law. The hotel had recommended a wonderful restaurant for our first dinner, we relied on my guide book for the 2nd. That was a mistake. Our experience was nothing like the description. Since there were no empty tables in the outside section along the water, we were taken upstairs. There were a few occupied tables and expected reasonably good service. Just the opposite: there was one waiter running around creating a very tense atmosphere. The service was slow, the food mediocre. The wines in the wine menu were overpriced, they were out of the wine we ordered first. The real insult was when they charged us 7.50€ for the couvert and we had him take the appetizers away. One learns very quickly in Portugal to not have them keep the appetizers on the table otherwise one is charged for them. The one positive is that Portugal no longer allows smoking inside so it was a smoke-free atmosphere. Dining al fresco you never knows if there will be smoke drifting in your direction from the next table.
