“Comfortable, warmth and... great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

great place to stay if you want a comfortable inn with history and a family touch heritage. Arthur is the perfect host: is kind and present but not intrusive. The place is in the middle of a rural area but a short distance by car from Braga, Guimarães and, even more important, from Ferrugem and São Gião, two of Portugal's best restaurants. You should try Arthur's 'vinhão' grape red wine, as well

This was definitely the best place we stayed during our two weeks holiday in Portugal. Arriving is already a treat as the scent of ripe grapes start to clean your mind while oranges fell of the trees ready to be eaten. You can feel the rich history of the Quinta immediately as soon as you step inside. This 18th century building was very carefully renovated and should make Arthur, the owner very proud. He made us feel very welcome. We stayed in the fantastic Canopy Bed Room and loved it, just like sitting on the terrace watching the sunset with a glass of wine after having a nice refreshing dip in the pool. Just everything we needed after a hot sunny day. The breakfast was amazing with great local food and fruits from Artur's garden. Strongly recommended!

Although it was early April and the weather was not spectacular, we had two great nights at this Quinta. We had looked it up before on tripadvisor and it held up to our high expectations. The host and owner Arthur was very friendly and made us feel at home instantly. The breakfast was terrific. Arthur shard many stories with us. Overall, its a great place to stay, very conveniently located for surrounding sites.

What a delightful experience we had staying two nights at this recently renovated quinta which has been in the host's family for centuries. We had comfortable and charming accommodation in the rustic style "doll's house" apartment. The property includes a lovely swimming pool, vineyards, fruit trees and gardens. An ample breakfast was served in the main house and featured delicious homemade jams and cake.

Best of all was our wonderful host Arthur who went out of his way to make us feel welcome and was always available for help and advice. We especially enjoyed his invitation one evening to share a bottle of local wine and engaging conversation about life in Portugal today.

There are no restaurants in walking distance of the quinta, but Arthur directed us to an inexpensive and quite good nearby local restaurant (5 min. by car) as well as to a particularly good restaurant in Guimaraes about 20 minutes away. Be aware that without a GPS in the car it can be difficult to find your way home at night.

We would gladly stay again. One little tip to Arthur -- there were not enough sun beds at the pool when several of the guests were down there at one time. Otherwise -- a wonderful stay that more than lived up to our expectations!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

We recently had a wonderful 3 night stay at Quinta da Cancela, at one of the Modern Rooms with an extra baby bed for our 3-year old daughter.

Pros:
- The service was definitely 5+ stars, it was something really special and personal. Arthur and his wife really went extra miles to help us and make us comfortable. I enjoyed being able to hear Arthur's first hand accounts of the life in northern portugal as well.
- The house is a gem - a beautifully restored 18th century house filled with antiques, surrounded by large garden, fruit trees and grape vines. What an experience to stay in such a place.
- The room was clean, functional, and was an interesting mix of old and modern. I liked the high beams and fresh flowers.
- Breakfast was amazing, filled with local products and treats, often directly from their garden, I'm told. His wife's hand-baked cakes were the best.
- The house is located in a rural area right in between Guimaraes and Braga, 5 minutes drive from Caldas das Taipas. It was easy to find, and a great location to explore Minho with a rental car.

Cons:
- I felt somewhat misleaded by a previous raving tripadvisor review about a stay with two small children (“Top pick in the North”). While our stay went well, I believe Quenta da Cancela works better for adults looking for beautiful and pampering vacation, as opposed to for self-caterers. In particular, I couldn't help being nervous about our running-around 3 year old among all the antiques and her footsteps echoing in the house. One night we tried to cook dinner at the kitchen (it's was a full kitchen but apparently most guests don't really cook), and we kept our daughter outside, where she happily played with the host's cats and ride on a swing in the yard. (We're from California, where antiques are rarely more than 100 years old, thus other travelers may be more at ease than us.)
- The modern room is on the small side, where the bathroom and the showers are both directly in the room. The bed was tough for us. (Meanwhile there are plenty of spaces outside the room that the guests can use and enjoy, and our host quickly gave us a mattress pad, which helped).

Overall, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Quinta da Cancela. It was a true treat to be in such a beautiful and welcoming place; a place like this makes the best part of the foreign travel experience. Arthur said that it's been only a year since they've started opening up the accommodation to general public, so now is the time to go and enjoy, before the words spread out and all rooms get booked up. If you have active toddlers, though, just be aware that this is a family heritage house with many valuable breakables within reach.

Hello Chihiro !!!
Thank you for your review!!
I am so glad you found your stay to be 5+ Stars !!!
Altough the house may seem like a museum, it feels so much better
when there youngsters are running around!
...and you know we have that big, big window facing the garden, so even when I
was sitting down, I could still see "J" in the garden, carefully chassing the cats!
It was a pleasure having you around!!
Greetings to sunny California !!!
Arthur

We travelled for 23 days in Portugal and stayed 5 nights at the Quinta da Cancela. It was a memorable experience. Although we enjoyed all the places we stayed, this Quinta stands out at the top of the list, and a place we must return. Arthur's enthusiasm and extreme helpfulness were highlights our our stay. One day after touring, he saw us having bread and cheese and brought us a salad made from fresh ingredients from the garden. Another day he brought us a sample of the dinner he and his wife were having. Early in the morning we saw him picking oranges from his trees to serve us fresh juice for breakfast. The last night of our stay we reserved our dinner at the Quinta. A different wine was served for each course. It was a fabulouse Portuguese dinner. What a treat. It's the little things that makes the time away from home special. Coming home from touring, it was wonderful to sit in the garden by the pool. Thank you Arthur for treating us so well.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cottage and enjoyed it. The the heritage rooms also looked inviting.

Since one of the main reasons you would find yourself in this area of Portugal is Wine, where better to stay than a traditional quinta that produces its own Vinho Verde using traditional techniques? We were made to feel very welcome in a home that is overflowing with family history and has been restored to an incredibly high standard. Our host provided a warm welcome on an otherwise cold and miserable day and sent us on our way the next day with a complimentary bottle of house wine to drown our sorrows at having brought such dreadful english weather with us. Fresh bread and homemade conserves made for a delightful breakfast. All in all, highly recommended!
