My wife and I spent 5 nights at the Bracara Augusta, conveniently located on the Praca da Republica. We wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel was clean, comfortable and charming. A great base to explore Braga and the Minho region. The hotel is 4 stories tall (includng the ground floor), and there is an elevator to help you take items up to the higher floors.
Room:
Very cosy room with hardwood floors and a very comfortable bed. There was a small refrigerator with mini-bar items... a little too small to be convenient for storing your own wine, however. There was also a digital safe for storing valuables. Tiny TV... but why are you in your room watching TV in such a great location. The bathroom was very nice... marble floors and very good shower.
Location:
Nearly flawless location. Right in the heart of the old town. Less than 5 minutes stroll from the fountains of the Praca da Republica. About 10 minutes walking distance from the old Se Cathedral. There is a Pingo Doce grocery store on the north west corner of the Praca (about 5-10 minutes walk) in the BragaShopping mall.
Staff:
The staff was incredibly friendly and spoke English quite well. They had several good suggestions for restaurants in the area. Free maps of Braga are provided and they will draw out directions on how to get to the main attractions. They also sell a wonderful guidebook there called "Minho em mil sugestoes"... "Minho in a thousand suggestions". It's a very good local guide to the area that is written in both Portuguese and English. If you have a car and are planning to explore the region, it's a great resource.
Breakfast:
Very good continental breakfast. Good selection of cold-cuts and cheeses and great fresh juices as well. Additionally there is an small hot buffet that included scrambled eggs, bacon and two varieties of sausages. They also had a nice variety of fruits and cereals. The coffee was quite good. The breakfast area is also a very nice restaurant in the evenings (closed on Sundays though). Our first dinner in Portugal was here and it was very nice.
Internet:
Free wireless and wired internet in the rooms. My wife and I were on the top floor and had a great wireless connection... never needed to use the cable. Upload and download speeds weren't super fast, but were good enough to check email, browse the web and send a few pictures. If you don't have a laptop, there was a free computer in the lobby for their guests.
Parking:
There is a parking deck underneath the Praca da Republica. The hotel will provide vouchers each morning to pay for the hours from 9PM to 9AM. You put these vouchers into the payment machines before your ticket and it will automatically deduct that amount. The rates are pretty reasonable... we found that we spent about 11 Euros a day if we didn't move the car at all. For days where we were out exploring in the car, our cost was much less.
