“what a gem of a place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

Tracy and myself stayed here for a week. The staff are excellent and nothing is too much trouble. I am a fussy eater and the kitchen was only to pleased to meet my needs. izza on satyrday night was ordered by a few people and we all struggled to finish.
The other couples who stayed at the same time made the holiday even more enjoyable after dinner chats and joke telling was great. Went on an 8 mile walk with John and we were escorted by a little dog for four miles. A big thankyou to you all without you the holiday wouldn't have been the same.
Mr Santos is fantastic always asking if everything is ok. Buying drinks for everyone and just going that extra mile to make the stay fantastic. ( A portuguese Bazil Fawlty but a real gent).
All the staff too many to mention were very accomodating and always greeted you with a smile.
The rooms were very nice and the shower was supercharged. (A kettle and a fridge would just make them perfect)
Asked at reception if they could do a packed lunch for our walk up Picoa Castela and this was done withing ten minutes.
Big thankyou to all the staff. Even Mecala whos is crazier than me ( not an easy task). x

Room Tip: 105 ground floor just perfect.

we stayed at this hotel for a week for relaxation and total chill out
This was a very freindly hotel and amenities were spot on, except for maybe more Bus shuttle times in the day and at night
The beach and town was a bit of a walk so shuttle then, taxi's back were the order of the day
The hotel was charming and quaint with the staff forever at your beck and call, if you want it
The Owner was there all through our stay and always asking if everything ok
The staff were just lovely and was the chambermaids.. all so friendly and really worked hard so that your stay was enjoyable
In all a very nice place, we met some lovely people and had plenty of laughs
a special thank you to Micala too who was just perfect

Lovely place very pretty & totally clean & tidy all over ,good sized rooms and great shower .staff are just the nicest people ,very helpful .any little problems we my have had where very quickly fixed or sorted ,food good but portions where to large for me so could not manage more than the main course .great place if you like to walk and feel totally safe at any time of the day or night . First time we have been on holiday and got to know & got on with most of the other guests ,which in its self helped to make this a great place to stay & recharge the battery's .obrigada mr Santo and your lovely staff

We stayed here at the beginning of October and found it a very clean and friendly hotel.
There is not much more I can add to previous good reviews. The owner Manuel is certainly a character but he is rightly very proud of his hotel and he provides excellent service to his guests.
We stayed half board and enjoyed the evening meals which were certainly of generous proportions. The house wine is highly recommended and there is good selection of mainly Portuguese wines at reasonable prices available.
Breakfast is bit repetitive with scrambled eggs and bacon every day but if you want fried egg or omelette they will cook this to order. However, there is a good selection of fruit, cereals, cakes etc
to ensure you don't go hungry. Remember this is a small hotel so don't expect the vast array of choices you would get at one of the vast inpersonal hotels you may previously stayed at.
We only ate out one night. This was at the Golf Club. An excellent meal but there were only four other people dining there!
We also highly recommend the jeep safari which takes you to places far too difficult to reach on foot and is highly informative about the island.
For those of you who like walking, there are plenty of paths from the hotel across country and up some of the small wooded mountains nearby.
The beach is remarkable! We had perfect weather and walked the entire length but had to relax next day sunbathing and swimming in the clear blue warm sea. The stretch of beach between the pier and the harbour is even quieter than the main stretch. We were the only two people on it one morning!
Some guests have commented that the hotel mini bus collects a little too late at 18.30 in the evening but we suggest having a wander into the town centre and having some refreshment and a custard tart an hour or so before catching the bus.
The bus is an excellent ice breaker with other guests and we soon made friends which made the stay at the hotel even more enjoyable.
A highly recommended holiday and hotel for those of you who enjoy something different in a warm and friendly hotel where the staff do everything to help.

Room Tip: We had a first floor room with a nice balcony to enjoy a glass of wine on.

Have to agree with just about all the good things said about this hotel. Lovely location (especially if you are a walker) about 15 minutes and 40 minutes to the start of two of the "official" walks, and about 40 minutes down to town and that incredible beach.
All of the staff are very friendly and helpful - be prepared for your first Portugese language lesson on day 1 from the chambermaids.
Room was very comfotable and had everything you needed apart from the previously mentioned lack of kettle & fridge, but that's not the end of the world.
The courtesy bus back up the hill after a hard day on the beach is also very handy.
Hopefully we will be back

My husband and I chose this hotel as we were looking for a holiday to get away from the stresses of life back home. The hotel is North of the island and is about a 40 min walk to the main town or a 5 min drive. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and welcoming and are always more than happy to assist if you need any help arranging taxi's or trips. If you are looking for a peaceful relaxing hotel this is the one for you, we got to know all of the other guests by the end of the holiday and the owner put on a good bye BBQ which was very enjoyable. I would advise taking your walking shoes as this island has some amazing views from the top of the mountains or walking around the coast. We will be definitely going back.

In August the cloudy start to the day made a welcome reprieve from the Summer sun. Though it wasn't always cloudy, it meant that we could go walking - from the top of the hills behind the hotel you can get a 360degree view of the island which was fantastic. We like exploring and I would heartily recommend the jeep safari as the best way to learn about the island and see fantasic sights. The guides were very knowledgeable, they didn't need a script and took care to answer everyone's questions as well, and it was by far the best excursion we have ever been on.The beach to the south of the island - not far away as the island is the length of the runway - had an amazing 9k long beach totally uncrowded. You can get a lift down to it, taxi or walk. But we loved the hills - take some walking shoes with you!
We liked the waitress service - half board was by far the best option - more shelter outside for after the meal would have been even better. The rooms were lovely - roomy, quiet and clean.
