“Good "base camp" to visit Madeyra”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Main feature or this hotel is location. The city center is right here, you can walk everything you need. The only problem with that - problems with parking (this is only for those who rent the car for vacation). You can leave the car near the hotel for night (the street is opened for car from 20:00 till 09:00 during working-week and is fully opened on weekends), but there are few opened streets around and there are two paid parkings in 5 mins walk.
The room is very simple, the kitchen is not the kitchen in full meaning of this word - the stove, fridge and the sink are located right near the beds, total size of kitchen corner is around 1*0.6 meters. But that was enough for two persons to prepare breakfast and sometimes supper.
The equipment requires renovation, we had to buy sponge, cleaning gel, salt and even a pan (the one in the room was so old i could not cook anything on it). We used to shop in "Pingo Doce" - everything we needed to but was very cheap.

The hotel has some sun beds on the roof, so you can take sunbath right in the hotel.

Overall impression - this is good hotel to stay in is you are not going to spend a lot of time in the room and if you are not going to create culinary masterpieces during your vacation.

The accommodation is very basic and in need of renovation. Everything in the room had that 'well worn' feel. The fridge worked - but the shelves kept filling with water. The TV was OK, but the volume was restricted to such a low level that we couldn't hear the BBC news. The room was cleaned every day, but we still had more than a few ants to keep us company. Having said that, the location of the hotel is excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Being right in the cenre of Funchal, being based here means that you are just 5 minutes walk away from the stops where you can catch the excellent local buses & travel cheaply to anywhere in the island. Quiet at night too as the surrounding area is pedestrianised. The staff are friendly and helpful and the studio rooms have most of the things you'd want in a kitchen to enable you to self cater if you don't feel like eating out every night.

We booked this hotel because of the Tripadvisor reviews which indicated the views from the roof were spectacular. For New Year's Eve we were 360 degrees surrounded by fireworks - couldn't have been better. The room and kitchenette were 1950's basic but adequate; appliances worked & dishes, etc. were sufficient. The reception desk staff was very friendly & helpful. Parking in Funchal was terrible and finding places very difficult because there were few street signs, everything is up & down & around corners, and building numbering system difficult to figure out. The hotel is right in the middle of downtown & close to everything.

We wanted a cheap week in Madeira for the sun. This apartment was ideal. In the middle of Funchal, near the Cathedral and all the Christmas celebrations. We ate out all the time. The weather was lovely. the staff are very friendly and helpful. Even to wishing my husband happy birthday. The rooms were cleaned well every day. Don't expect Claridges but you will get a good clean apartment.

I visited Funchal for the first time , and decided on this place...I didnt want a resort hotel or a place with hundreds of rooms. This place was perfect . First of all the staff could not do enough to help me with all the information I needed. Step outside the door and you are in the heart of thebest part of the city in my opinion . You can walk to the city centre, the Cathederal da Se , to the waterfront , close to the cable car, the revitalized area of cafes and restaurants where the doors are works of art...steps away from the hotel there are streets full of cafes and restaurants with great prices...the apartment was more than enough for me as a solo traveller and the fridge was a bonus to keep snacks and beer and wine chilled..also close to the theatre and so much more. while there , there was a festival and there was music everywhere. If you are a traveller that enjoys the local flavor I recommend you stay here , enjoy the neighborhood , the cafes and restaurants, by the way try the special madeira shishkebab with the cubes of a type of fried polenta cubes...all available a few steps away ..if you have time take a trip to Porto Santo ...this Island s 2 hours by boat, and worth the trip....if you have time stay a few days...It's the place to go if you want to escape for a while....I can never thank the people of Funchal for the warm welcome , help, and hospitality ..
