“Very nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Very enjoyable stay... Amenities covers all of the basic needs. Staff was friendly and we would be happy to stay here again. The rooms were cleaned on a daily basis, It's in an ideal position for holiday makers as the sites and restaurants are pretty much on your door step. As for value €24 a night is as cheap as it gets. We found it very useful to have our own microwave and fridge giving us the option to dine in or out. With the additional balcony it gave us the option to enjoy the evening with a glass of wine!

arrived in funchal end of may prebooked this so called hotel well the reception is small and clustered the owner was working on something in that area I was shown to my room on the same level as the reception area thats the first floor no lift located right next to the main doors to hotel and reception noisy all night long the room very basic indeed the floor was sloping down like being at the top of a hill the floor was in need of repair deparately the shower and toilet were disgusting full of mold when you showered the water ran out into the bedroom the towels needed a wash could not stop the tap it was a disgrace the worst i have stayed in the morning at breakfast you were served with one coffee and a juice after that you had to pay for any extra you got your breakfast in a bag containing one piece of bread a butter and a jam no cereal nothing else had better in police cells the view from the window was of a square which was load at night the only good thing i can say is there is a bar underneath which is not connected to the hotel were you can get a good breakfast

Room Tip: stay away if you can but the best are the front

Service = warm, friendly and efficient from helpful staff (e.g. let me change rooms no questions asked.)
Value = at €24 per night, this is a bargain, given its location.
Sleep quality = poor in courtyard rooms (noise magnified from reception area) and front (from adjacent bar.) Might be better in side rooms.
Cleanliness = spotless, quite an achievement in an old building full of character.
Location = city centre, unsurpassable.
Rooms = full of charm in this traditional Madeiran building, so much more pleasant than a modern, purpose-built slab hotel but, sadly, lacking the latter's sound-proofing in rooms.
Overall, would not return as do not enjoy resorting to ear plugs to achieve my prime need from a hotel; sleep.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms opening on to the noisy courtyard, or at the front of the hotel above the neighbouring b...

Great place to stay, in the middle of it all. Way better than the hotel zone. Everything is couple of minutes walk away. Clean, relatively well equipped, safe. Spent there three days, very happy with it.

Room Tip: Rooms with double bed have great views to the a beautiful square.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I stayed here recently for a few weeks and chose it specifically because the reviews were more good than bad, but primarily because it was inexpensive. Sadly, as in most cases, the good things are simply stated and taken for granted, but bad things become glaring by comparison. Don't give more weight to the negative just because I added comments, the positives are pretty amazing.

Good points:
All of the employees are lovely, helpful and friendly. It's easy to find. Centrally located in Funchal with truly easy walking access to most of what you want to see there. Great view from front windows directly at the port and cruise ships. Very clean & cleaned daily. Free wifi (when it's working-90% of the time it is). They wash/dry/fold/deliver your laundry for 5 euros. Free breakfast (only bread/butter, OJ and coffee). No bed bugs (I checked for 20 minutes when I arrived)! Plenty of water/plenty of hot water, decent water pressure, clean bathroom. I'm sure I'll think of more and can update later...

Bad points:
1 - There are 20 steep stairs to reception, 20 to the 3rd floor and another 20 to the top floor. Not easy going to the top floor with a 50 lb suitcase, much less to climb after walking up up up up for hours a day in Madeira.
2 - The single most uncomfortable mattress I've ever slept on in my life, and lumpy unsupportive rewashed pillows that were equally bad for the neck/back. I'm a physical medicine doctor, so believe me, if you have any back problems or are over 25 years old, they're likely harmful (not neutral) for your back (I couldn't turn my neck the last week I was there). I understand the pillows being washed, and appreciate how clean they were, but take your own if you go there and if you're uncomfortable in the bed, ask for another room.
3 - Ask for a room at the back of the building, NOT on the square. It is the noisiest place I've ever had to sleep for many nights with almost 24/7 loud traffic, shouting and background noise. The trashmen picked up glass recycling at 12:20 am, crashingly audible at every restaurant for many blocks around for at least 20 minutes.... imagine that sound waking you. My only full night sleep was my third Sunday, when it was raining.
4 - This might just be a personal pet peeve, but there are few things I hate as much as a plastic or fabric corner shower curtains billowing in and clinging to my butt, arms, back, belly...while I'm showering. Corner showers are never big enough, and I spent literally half my time in the shower fussing and fighting with the curtain just to give myself enough room, and not be shoving it off me constantly. This, to be fair, happens in many small hotels.

I gave them a 4/5 because I would and will absolutely stay at Zarco again, the people and location are fantastic and absolutely worth it (while making a few modifications).

Room Tip: But my advice is: take your own pillow, and earplugs (they saved me). Refuse the rooms in front on...

If you are looking for a budget accomodation, you need to look no more. Residencial Zarco is situated in the centre of Funchal, so it is close to all major attractions (old town, port, funicular line to Monte, bus stations etc), and also just a few steps away from many restaurants and bars. The service is nice, everyone is friendly and helpful.
We stayed there for 5 nights, and our room was cleaned and maintained every day, including changing of towels.
As said before, the breakfast is basic (OJ, 2 fresh buns, some cheese, jam and butter, and a hot drink), but you can bring your own food and they will keep it in the fridge for you.
Our room was not too big, but we actually used it only for sleeping and didn't spend any time in there during the day. As for sleeping, the matresses are covered with plastic wrap, so it makes it a little bit uncomfortable if you toss and turn during the night (my friends were not bothered with that, but it disturbed me a little bit!).
There was a small TV in the room, and the choice of channels was good.
I would probably stay here again ;)
