“Another pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2014

Stayed for the fourth time in these apartments last September. Booked superior studio again. Very comfortable stay, nice and quiet even though it is in the centre of funchal. Very central, 3 mins away from supermarket, very close to restaurants coffee shops etc.
on the minus side rooms were cleaned late in the afternoon which was a nuisance at times, one evening wit 6.30!

I stayed in the Atlantida for 3 nights. The location was great however we should have been warned of the nearby construction works that were going on & started at 8am. A couple of things needed to be repaired in the room and the cleaning was not of the highest standard. Very stuffy/smelly room and not enough lighting. Good size room and I paid a good price for the location- everything you could need on your doorstep. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Rooms were clean, quiet and spacious but a bit dark, however, amazing value for money, so it is a little bit of a trade off.

Great location two streets away from marina and next door to a shopping centre where you can pick up supplies.

Highly recommended.

Booked a 2 bed apartment which turned out to be 1 double bedroom and double bed in partitioned off lounge area (so no privacy). Nice kitchenette spoiled by lack of decent equipment and crockery ( 3 mismatched wine glasses + 1 tumbler were the only glasses). Balcony overlooked derelict buildings. We also had no towels for 24 hours and no functioning air con for 2 days, despite contacting reception many times. On the positive side, the location is excellent - next to municipal gardens ( with cafe bar), upmarket shopping centre with supermarket, restaurants and main street, but quiet. No other facilities onsite such as bar, swimming pool.or terrace.

The only good point of this place is that you are near the city center and near shopping, if that is where you want to be. I was not expecting luxury when booking this place, but I do expect a place to be functional, which these apartments were not.

Bathroom is very tight, with a strange, very low, and deep counter. Hard to use. Floor is much lower than the bath and very slippery; thus, dangerous. Door hits the toilet when it opens inward. I thought they may have designed the low counter for a wheelchair, but there is NO way a person could enter this bathroom in a wheel chair and then turn themselves under the counter and reach to the faucet. It would also be impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to enter the tub or get on the toilet, unless they dived headfirst into the tub and then crawled onto the toilet from there. Thus, there is no excuse for the hard to use counter and sink.

Kitchen is NOT well equipped. No sharp knife, no cutting board, no bottle opener, no corkscrew. Top of fridge was packed with ice and snow and not functioning. You have to stand on a steel track to do anything in the kitchen.

Room is very dark, table is crammed in a dark corner so that you cannot even get on to and off of the chairs. I turned the table and pulled it a bit out of the corner and put the chair on the side, as I was alone. Even two laptop cords do not reach to the outlet in the kitchen.

Floors were dirty for the whole week. Two huge dead cockroaches were left in plain site for 3 days until I picked them up, since housekeeping clearly was either blind or did not care. The first dead roach was right in the entryway when I arrived, and the second one I killed in the bathroom the first night. They were both the size of a person's thumb, so it was truly amazing to me that housekeeping would not see them and sweep them up.

You have to pay if you want to use the in-room safe, and the two deep, square box-like chairs in the room are utterly useless, except maybe to lay your suitcase across.

Two nights there were very loud concerts in the nearby park that prevented sleep. Another night, some sort of alarm or siren went off repeatedly for 7 hours, preventing sleep.

I don't want to complain endlessly, but these were all things that made my stay more painful than enjoyable. I had seriously wanted to "cook," not just heat up soup or pasta. And I had planned on sleeping for seven nights in Funchal, not just four.

Room Tip: My room was at the front. Maybe the noise issues would be less of a problem on the back.

The apartment block is in the centre of Funchal away from the hotel district. Its quiet yet just off a major shopping mall. The staff are very helpful and a credit to both the apartment owners and reflect the very friendly nature of the people o Madeira. Our studio was spacious and stylish. However the hard beds took a time to get use to and the safe didn't work. You can store valuables in the apartment safe. The continental breakfast was fine with a very good choice of fruit dishes. This apartment was good value for money outlaid.Remember to take a bottle opener

Room Tip: no pool or fitness centre

If you want to be in an ideal central location to see Funchal at ease then this is the place to stay.
If you don't wish to cook at all then everything is on your doorstep.
The apartment we stayed in was well equipped in the kitchen. Excellent beds, slept soundly the whole time, particularly quiet even though so central. A few niggly things which could have been fixed with a screwdriver, bidet towel rail, bidet plug, fridge door.
The reception staff were very friendly & info leaflets were always updated & added to.
We would definitely stay here again & hopefully get better weather next time.
