We had arrived to Atlantida after a short flight from Lisbon. Funchal is beautiful, and the hotel is located in the center of the town, between the Lido and the old town, which is about 20 minutes by foot.
As we first entered the lobby, a nice receptionist had welcomed us, but an odious smell struck us. I can't explain why or what is the source of the smell, but it had lasted throughout all of our stay.
The rooms are clean and quite spacious, but the furnishing (incl. the beds) seems quite used and not very up-to-date, however sufficiently comfortable. More like a 3-star hotel than 4, but what can you expect with an attractive price as this accommodation option offers.
We found it very nice to use the compact kitchen and fix a fresh breakfast every morning. A shopping center is just a couple of steps away, and has a bakery which offers some very good breads and pastries.
One receptionist, Paula, was very nice and helped us with the tours, as it was our first visit on the island. I recommend to check all the options and plan the excursions before the arrival. We were quite limited in time (4 days), so we took 2 different daily trips - one to the western part of Madeira and another one to the eastern part, in order to explore as much as we coud. These activities are quite expensive, but definitely worthwhile if you choose them wisely. And choosing wisely, or so we learned, is certainly not picking automatically the excursions that your hotel offers; On the first trip, we were teamed with a portuguese-speaking group. Aside from feeling outsiders, we had to wait every time until the guide will explain in portuguese and then tried to understand her (good) english explanation, which was a very difficult mission, according to the microphone which was out of order. These things can happen, even on a serious and large tourist company, but assumingly will have a much smaller chance to occur, so you have to check carefully and make sure that you will pick an excursion with a group of people who speak your requested language.
Back to the hotel. Overall, we had a fairly nice stay there. Unfortunately, one incident affected our honor and respect to Atlantida; A nightshirt was disappeared from our room just after the maid cleaned it. We looked for it all over the place without any success. We didn't find it even after we landed back in our country. So, the nightshirt was disappeared, as it had been swallowed by the earth. This is not the main issue, however. During our presence, the staff checked with the maid and respond negatively, but a woman, who seems to be the manager, promised us that they will handle a more comprehensive search and mail us the nightshirt, if found. She promised to update us with the condition by e-mail and wrote down all of our details. Since today, almost 4 months after our stay, we haven't heard a word from Atlantida. I don't have a clue how a nightshirt could be disappeared without being taken, however, the neglect of the incident by the hotel staff is a concerning method of service these days. A hotel which respects itself must first respect its guests, a principle which surely haven't been taken care of in our matter.
