“Peaceful with amazing views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

We have just arrived home from a great week at this hotel
I had read the reviews before booking so did wonder how it would be
It is a beautiful place to stay The location is just great
We were so glad we were not at the other end of town where there is just one modern hotel on top of another and building still going on
We stayed on half board basis There is a limited choice for breakfast and evening meal
The majority of visitors seem to be Dutch or German and this is reflected in the breakfast menu choices, the croisants are not like ours here in the UK or in France
The hotel is always peaceful and is imaculately clean throughout
We had a room in the original older part of the building with the best view of the sea ,harbour, mountains and the town It was lovely to sit on the balcony at the beginning and end of each day
If you have a room in the newer part of the hotel the view is just of sea
The pool area and gardens are lovely and never busy, again the views ar amazing up there You pay a deposit for a towel which is refunded at the end of the week
The staff are all friendly especially in the restaurant at evening meal time
The driver of the shuttle bus is quiet but he drives more cautiosly than the taxi drivers If you have chance I would recommend taking the all day trip to the north and west of the island
Bedding and towels are regularly changed
The weather was always warm but mainly cloudy however when the sun did shine it was quite hot The forecast for the week was inaccurate
I would recommend this hotel for couples especially who like a peaceful place to stay

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Bay and town rather than just sea view There are two lifts one in the old par...

Stayed here from 7th-14th June 2013. The hotel is set high above Funchal giving lovely views of the sea and over looking Funchal. This makes for some nice sights at night when the sun is setting. Being so far out of the way it would be impractical to walk down to the centre, the hotel runs a mini-bus that must be booked, book early or you'll end up on one of the later runs, they start at 10am! You can also catch the number 39 bus in to town.

The rooms are very clean, for such a small hotel of around 40 rooms it has a lovely garden and quite large grounds. The staff are friendly, reception will phone various places on your behalf, the restaurant staff are very nice and friendly as well as the man at the bar. A great hotel overall!

One HUGE minus when staying half-board is the food is awful. Two choices for each course, salad or soup (soupa!), then usually a meat or fish dish, followed by some pudding or fruit salad. The pudding is basically the same thing each night with a different sauce over the top of it, passion fruit pudding puts in an appearance a lot which is a thick creamy desert with hard pips in it.

Main meals are also quite poor, the size and actual food is very poor, frozen veg, dry salad and meats/fish which are of low quality. For the price I would expect something a little better, or perhaps if they charged a little bit more they could offer better food. The difference between room only and half board seems to be quite a lot, room only being around £250-ish and HB being the low end of £400... the food definitely isn't worth this difference.

We would definitely stay at this hotel again but would think twice about going HB, most of the food you eat just because but would be better going in to Funchal and finding somewhere cheap but cheerful to eat.

The only other downside is the bath is full of mouldy sealant, the rest of the room is spotless and this really lets the whole room down, see our photos for more details.

Rated this 3 out of 5 because of the poor food, would of been a 4 or 5 out of 5 if the food was better.

The hotel looks stunning and has surroundings and views to match! Our room had a seaview as do most and was of a high standard as were all the public areas. The staff were all very friendly. Food was good. There is a courtesy shuttle into town. Absolutely no complaints, would definitely stay there again.

My first visit to this hotel last year I didn't know how I would feel as travelling alone but loved the place. Decided to book again this year and had doubts (never the same if you return and all that). All doubts diminished when I saw familiar faces and it almost felt like a homecoming ...sounds cheesy but that's how I felt this time. Views to die for and all rooms have views. As this was my second visit, I found it very easy to relax. Reception staff were helpful and informative as usual and the restaurant guys were a joy and made me feel quite pampered at dinner. It's been a long time since I got emotional at the end of my holiday but I so wanted to stay longer. Already saving for my next visit but hey...shouldn't be broadcasting all this as I selfishly want to keep it for myself.

Have just come back from a week in this hotel, its a good 4 star hotel with great sea views
and very friendly staff, room clean and tidy,
only problem is its to far to walk in to Funchal, there is a free hotel bus that runs most days at set times

Room Tip: we had room 131 it has to be the best room at the hotel

Stayed the last week in April, check in was good with friendly staff. I booked a sea view room but we got a bay view, which was nice, the room did'nt get the sun on the balcony during the day but this could be a bonus in the hotter months, however it was great on the evenings watching the sun go down with a bottle of wine. The room was a bit dated but was very good and very clean, the only problem with the room was that there was no safe as advertised, mentioned this the the staff member at reception, who said they had been having problem was the safe mechanisms, so safes had been removed from some of the rooms.

I chose this hotel because we did'nt want to stay in town particularly in the lido area, wanted to stay in quite hotel with a view and this hotel fitted the bill, excellent views and gardens, this is very much an adults only hotel which for us was a bonus. We booked the flights, transfers and hotel independently which we found worked out cheaper than a package holiday, however we were very surprised to be invited to the usual package holiday style welcome meeting when we checked in, don't attend these when we do go on package holidays so had no intention attending this one.

We visited the pool on the second day even though the hotel guests are mostly Germans there was no culture of putting towels on sun beds, we checked out the facilities, the sauna was clean but wasn't switch on at the time, think you just switch it on yourself by turning the timer, the jacuzzi on the other hand was disgustingly dirty, there was a film of dirt floating on the top, smelt disgusting with flies hovering over the top. My husband's profession is water hygiene and this was one of the worst jacuzzi's he's seen, even if the water was drained, jacuzzi cleaned and dosed, the bacteria will be still in the filtration system and anyone who uses it could end up in deadly circumstances, particularly as the average age of the hotel clients were in their seventies who could be more supeptiable to illness by using the jacuzzi particularly if not in the best of health. Personally we wouldn't use a jacuzzi / spa but I advise nobody to use this one. Another issue was the swimming pool, the water level was at least a foot below the normal level, another indication that there is a poor pool dilution / hygiene regime, the pool was topped up on our next visit which was a few days later but it is not acceptable to let the water level drop to the level it was on our first visit. It was a shame because apart from this all other areas of the hotel was well kept especially the garden.

The breakfast was basic but enough to set you up for the day, however I have never seen so much blatant food taking from the breakfast room, people were walking out with ready made sandwiches and yogurts, there we even taking the tea spoon for the yogurts and filling empty drinks bottles with the juices, it's one thing sneaking a bit of fruit in a bag but this was people showing themselves up.

As mentioned most of the guests are German and a lot of them are on the half board option, we looked at the choices on this option and was glad we didn't opt for this. We did eat in the restaurant a couple of time and although more expensive than town the food was excellent with excellent service, waiters are very knowledgable especially John ( not how you spell his name but pronounce similar).

Apart from the pool issues we had a pleasant time at the hotel and would recommend it if you want a quiet hotel. We used the No.39 bus to and from town which I can only describe as a roller coaster ride without the harness, the hotel guests would get off the bus looked at each other had a giggle about it.

Stayed here late November 2012 for a week. Had a superior room overlooking the bay. Beautiful views, enjoyed watching cruise ships arriving and departing daily. Room was clean and tidy, cleaned regularly. Would have liked tea and coffee making facilities for that early morning wake up routine but it appears very few hotels in Madeira provide such facilities, according to other tourists we met whilst there.
'Soup or salad, fish or meat', if you go half board, you will get to know this phrase very well. The quality of the food is OK, but does become repetitive after a while (about 2 days) but you can go al a carte and get some reduction. The al a carte food if very good.
Getting into Funchal is easy, either use the free shuttle mini-bus (but remember to book at reception early), the local bus services or arrange a taxi. Tended to go in on the bus (stop immediately outside the car park) and take a taxi back (paid around 6 euros). Funchal is very attractive and safe, good restaurants and bars in town and enough to do for a few days. First time in Madiera, weather was good (rained a little but still pleasantly warm, lots of rainbows).
Highly recommend the cable car ride and a toboggan ride back down, take the taxi at the bottom back into town, very long and steep walk otherwise, legs like jelly at the end.
The hotel has the best views in town but it is remote and may not be suitable for everyone. If you don't mind being out of the centre and having to travel into town to go anywhere, I would recommend. In my opinion, it is good value for money.
Took a wildlife safari trip, took a Levada walk and sailed on a pirate ship - all very good fun.

Room Tip: Upgrade to superior bay view
