“Great value for money accommodation.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014 via mobile

Very affordable place, it does not require credit card to book... Very well situated, close to everything, like the marina, Dolce Vita(the mall), a series of restaurants and local comerce... The rooms are simple, and clean... The breakfast is simple but comes included... It has a cool, old, scary elevator... The wireless signal is too weak to use... On the last day there, tobacco smoke was coming into my room from the door, wich meant someone was smoking in a room. Still very good value for money.

My husband and I knew that the residencial colombo was not going to be like a 5*star hotel, but i was expecting to be a little bit better. The furniture is very old, didnt had shampoo, the lights outside the rooms works only when theres movement, and it doesnt stay more than a minute. There should be a vending machine since all the shops close after 9/10 and theres no convenience store. I only like the fact that it was on a great location, great staff, close to the main restaurants, shops and marina. Its a great value for money.

Found the hotel via booking website and chose it causevof the reasonable price. The rooms are good and spacious, with wooden floor and (at least the one i have) big balcony with a bale and chair to sit in and relax. Hotel is located on a busy street yet i do not think anyone spands a day in a hotel when being on madera so do not think that is an isue, it serves descent breakfest on the roof so a good view of the ocean and part of the twon are guaranteed.

Nice, funny old place right in the heart of Funchal, close to independent shops and restaurants. Best of all, close to the bus stops that took us up into the mountains for the most amazing walks along the famous levadas!
Colombo is quirky, cheap, international, no unnecessary mod-cons.

Great location in the centre of the city, attractions easily accessible by walk. Furniture a bit old, but for the price it is acceptable. Nice roof terrace for breakfast, which is simple but nice and everything is fresh including local fruits. Walls are not soundproof, so rooms can be quite noisy because of the lift and the staircase

Room Tip: rooms in the back are more quiet

stayed in this hotel 1 week and it was the worse hotel i have ever stayed in .
They took us to a building around the back , it was dirty , old , smelly and nasty. The room and the bed lining all smelled of cigarette smoke .
we were moved to the main building . it was noisy, there is a games arcade directly opposite this place and it was loud and opened till late .
will never stay here again , it ruined our holiday !
And the staff ? most unfriendly and unhelpful .

Good evening,
Thanks for your honest opinion. The team of Residencial Colombo would like to excuse for the lack of attention and the improper quality of service that was provided. Unfortunately, and regarding the high season, we were not able to give you a better room. Nevertheless, we are constantly working on improving of our facilities and services and are willing to give you a considerable discount if you decide to visit us once again.
Best regards,

The Residencial Colombo is in a great location, should you want to be close to downtown, near bus stops and the Old Town, and if you want to out-and-about rather than spending time by a hotel swimming pool. The reception staff are very helpful, and speak fluent English. On several occasions we asked the young lady on the late afternoon shift for information such as the weather forecast, or bus times; when she didn't have an immediate answer, she would check it out for us and remember to tell us next time we passed the front desk. When we needed to check out early, arrangement was made for night staff to prepare us a pretty good early morning breakfast. Rooms are a reasonably good size, clean, and with comfortable beds. Breakfast, which is provided on the top floor, can be taken either inside or outdoors on an adjacent terrace.
On the down side, rooms look a bit gloomy at night, as light globes seem to be of rather low wattage. Water in the bathrooms of the main building never seemed to get above luke-warm, though in the annexe around the corner from the main building - and where you are put if if a tour group is staying - the water was very hot. Breakfasts, whilst ok, are a bit hit-and-miss: sometimes there is yoghurt and wholemeal bread, other times not, and there was no muesli provided. These minor issues can easily be remedied.
In sum, for the exceptionally modest tariff, helpful staff ,and the terrific location, this is well worth considering.
