“BIG, BIG MISTAKE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2011

Thompson Google map location is incorrect. The property is miles out of the city in a very hilly residential area. The entrance gate opens directly on to a dangerous busy main road with no footpaths. You have to climb a very steep road with blind bends and then cross a dangerous junction to get to the supermarket and takeaway. The location is anything but peaceful with dogs barking and cockerels crowing night and day. There was no air con or ceiling fan, a filthy three piece suite and rugs, rusty chipped enamel bath, tiny bedroom size tv with poor reception, broken parasols and bases, old and dirty sunbeds, and a dirty swimming pool. We did complain to the Thompsons rep in resort, however if you wish to move you have to pay in full plus a cancellation fee. We have complained by letter to Thomsons holidays which was, you guessed it, a complete waste of time. You have been warned.

The appartment was bigger than expected & well equiped with toaster & kettle plus plenty of what you need, albeit a very mixed selection of glasses! It's not brand new but it is very nice. The bed was hard, which I loved but I can see the complaint. What dogs? They aren't that bad.

Only 6 appartments in the block, which looks like a private house, nice swimming pool & terrace area. Bus stop close by taking you directly to the city centre, ask about the giro bus ticket if you plan to use the bus. Super market is very good & plenty of little bars in walking distance at considerably lower prices than in the city. Excellent take-away with firendly English speaking staff, you can eat in too.

after reading reviews about barking dogs we thought we could live with a bit of noise however in reality the barking was almost continuous all day and all night this together with the hardest most uncomfortable matress we got little to no sleep during our 7 day stay. the appartment was clean but it was so dated it was like visiting your grannies house. as for being self catering the cooker did not work leavng only and microwave and toaster to do any cooking on. being tall the sloping ceiling in the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen was a nightmare. no safe deposit box in room meant you had to hide passports and valuables in room. the walled balcony is so high that when you're seated on the poor quality patio furniture you get a good view the wall not a sea view as stated in brochure. there was a nice black tide mark around the pool obviously never been cleaned in ages. only a few poor quality sun loungers around pool. on a plus side there is a big supermarket and nice restaurant/takeaway 10 minutes walk up the hill but beware there is no pavement making it a hazerdous walk especially at night. very disappointed with villa and location definately would not recommend.

We have just returned from a weeks' stay and it exceeded our expectations.
It was a package through Thomsons and the price was very good.
We had a studio and expected the normal one square room with everything in but were very pleasantly surprised because the layout gave it more of a sense of a one bedroom apartment. It did have sloping ceilings and you did have to mind your head, luckily we are not very tall and my husband only banged his head twice!
It was however spotlessly clean and the maid was in every other day. We arrived just after mid-day and the room was not ready, we expected this, after all, the other people had just left that morning and it does require a bit of time to prepare for the next lot.
The lady who met us was so nice and very apologetic about it but we assured her that it was no problem at all, after all, if you book into an hotel, you are lucky to be allowed in before 2pm. We could leave our luggage there so this we did and set off up the hill less than 10 min walk, to the supermarket, however, across the road from said supermarket is a wonderful pastelaria which has the loveliest cakes and bread etc., so of course we had to sample some! There is also a pharmacy there and a butchers.
Suitably refreshed, we went into the supermarket. Inside there is also a cafe/bar, a phone shop, hairdressers, shoe shop and newsagents.
The supermarket itself is large and well stocked with local produce and some English items.
Arriving back at the avista, our room was ready and lovely it was too, the balcony is smallish but lovely views of Funchal, the mountains and the sea.
Facilities included tv with some english speaking channels, fridge, oven (both quite dated but working, but beware, oven has only two temperatures, hot and damned hot!)
We did manage to burn a rather nice chicken meal. Studio also has microwave, toaster, kettle and adequate crockery/cutlery. Also nice dining area inside if you don't fancy dining al fresco. Very comfortable sofa and armchairs and double bed has rather firm mattress but we found it very comfortable. The avista is situated such that it probably would not be suitable for the less mobile.
Funchal itself is about a 30min walk downhill which we did but got taxi back, about 6 euros, there is a good bus service but we didn't use it.
We prefer the old part of Funchal, we weren't too keen on the lido area, it didn't have the same character.
All in all a lovely accommodation on a lovely island.

Near supermarket, near cafe and bus stop. Big 1 bed apartment with nice big balcony and great views. Supermarket is close, which is good for a self catering apartment. Really enjoyable stay.

Negative points: gas didn't work on cooker. Dogs did seem to be having a barking match one night, but generally not too bad. Light above table didn't work.

There was a TV with sone English channels on. All films were not dubbed and had subtitles.

Owner offered good advice, but we didn't see him after the first day.
