Hold on because it's like nothing else before. I haven't read about any accidents but it stayed fresh in my mind. Still, way different from anything else. Combine it with tropical garden and one way cable ride. Negotiate taxi to 10 euros and team up with another couple for the ride back to downtown.
I expected it to be bumpy but it wasn't. We went very fast and the only way our handlers had to slow us down was to zig-zag. This meant we were hurtling towards the wall at the side for a lot of the time. I didn't like that but my husband did! As well as the 2 guys with us there were people posted where the route intersected roads - altogether a fairly labour intensive service. At a cost of 30 euros for 2 of us the price seems ok to me.
Long before setting off on holiday we decided to give this a go. In Madeira everyone we met from the UK made out that this was a hairy ride and naturally convinced this to be so. Well it wasn't.We were expecting it to break into a sudden outburst of speed but no. For the cost (15 euro each) we were left naturally disappointed. Now we were warned that the ride stopped halfway down the mountain in the middle of no where. So we were all prepared to walk the rest of the way to town but it is a heck of a trek when you then have to walk a long way back to your hotel! So if you are going to walk back, then break your journey.
Loved the sled ride down and I agree with previous reviews. Did not like the taxi prices. There is a cafe at the top and the bottom. And there are toilets.
What a quirky thing to do. This was, by far, the best experience of our trip! We absolutely loved it! Wished we could go again, or that it was longer. We walked the rest of the way down---quite steep but a nice walk.
