We stayed five nights at Phil's haven. The hostel is situated 20-30min walking outside of Funchal's center. It is a nice little walk along the coast, which saves you the daily bus ticket. Phil was very friendly and helpful and the hostel is quite charming with a great view on the ocean (from the breakfast table). Our room was clean and bright. The value is very good considering that breakfast is included (however it is unfortunately nothing special).
The only downside is the kitchen, which is not very well equiped and a bit small and chaotic for the amount of people living there. Also the kitchen and toilet were a bit messy at times.

Anyhow, I'd really recommend the place!

We enjoyed our ( unfortunately very short) stay at Phil´s haven a lot. Phil is most helpful providing you will lots of useful information. Also it is conveniently located to walk to downtown (20 Minute walk) the kitchen is fully equipped and our room ( private 2 people room) was quite big. Everything was very clean and you felt the love Philippe and Anna put into this place. The only downside might be that you hear whenever somebody else is awake, the floor shrieks quite a but and you hear the water running like it your having a shower of your own.
Anyway all in all I can just really recommend staying at this lovely place and enjoy it for yourself!
Thanks!!

We had a really great time staying at Phil's, we were there for 4 nights and 5 days. The hostel is gorgeous and in a really great location. the walk to downtown is gorgeous and the view from the hostel of the ocean is amazing. Phil is also amazing. He helped us plan our excursions so that we could do more of what we wanted with our time in Madeira and a lower cost (thanks again Phil!!). One night we went out with everyone from the hostel, Phil showed us some local drinking spots and everyone had a great time. The breakfast was also really good! we were very hungry so we got our own eggs, and having full use of the big kitchen was very handy. Also when you go to Phil's make sure to try the fresh mangos growing outside the house!! they were delicious and ripe, even in december. And free ;)
Also the hostel was very very clean! upon arrival we were greeted with freshly made up beds with freshly clean linens.

Feels like youre in a 5 star hotel ;)

Would recommend to anyone traveling to Madeira for a night or a few weeks!

Room Tip: we stayed in the all female dorm, it was on the main floor with 6 beds. it was close to the kitchen...

I arrived at the Funchal airport at 8:00 pm – Phil greeted me and took me back to the house where he resumed bbq’ing chicken for dinner. I sat down to a potluck dinner with 12 people from 12 different countries – the evening was magical – people had developed friendships and the wine was flowing. Phil’s Haven is a beautiful house – clean, non-smoking, well organized, friendly. The quality of people this place attracts makes it a fun, desirable, community-oriented place to stay. Single travellers will love this place – it’s a guest house with the vibe of a hostel. Phil and Anna are young (early 20’s), well-travelled, interesting hosts who are dedicated to ensuring their house encourages socializing, community, and the development of friendships. Phil’s Haven is what I term “destination accommodation” in that it is an attraction unto itself – a reason to return to Madeira. The house overlooks the ocean, has several common areas, a shared computer, a clean, well-organized kitchen with the necessities you will need. There are private rooms, as well a dorm style accommodation. If your accommodation priorities include 1) fun 2) cleanliness 3) meeting other travellers 4) amenities – then you should stay at Phil’s Haven. For those who have stayed in hotels all their lives – I encourage you to try something different – hotels cannot replicate the social atmosphere of this guest house - and if you have never tried the shared accommodation experience - this is a great place to introduce yourself into this type of travelling. Cheers!
