I have stayed in Do Centro many times and have always had a pleasant holiday. Hotel is very clean and staff helpful. It is a part of portugese mentality not to be so open and talkative than in some other cultures and they also might be shy about their language skills. When asked, the staff allways helped gladly and gave advice, but there were some new people who weren't as skillfull. FYI: I have discovered that madeirans in general don't always know their island best - get yourself a good map, from the tourist info for example... :)
Location is superb! It is very convenient to move around the island from here, everything is so close and even though the location is central, hotel doesn't suffer from too much noise. The doors to the corridors, however, are not adequately soundproof - for a light sleeper I'd recommend ear plugs, as I would to almost anywhere in the world, but I don't think this hotel was particularly noisy.
Personally, I don't understand reviews in which people long for tea/coffee making facilities etc. in the room, especially in Funchal where there is an ecellent coffee bar on each corner. With these room rates, you'll get an excellent value for your money even though the breakfast is continental and relatively modest. (2-3 different breds or rolls, 2-3 choises of juice, ham, cheese, coffee, tee, marmelade). In my opinion, if you want everything to be perfect, especially for an amazing honeymoon, you should select at least a 4 or 5-star hotel and, even then, the experience and atmosphere could be better some where else.
We have never suffered from any kind of pests, ants or bedbugs in Do Centro, that were mentioned earlier somewhere. Everything in the room was very clean and (drawers and cupboards, bathroom, balcany) also spacious enough, especially for the price they charge.
There is so much to see on this little island that people should not spend their holiday in a hotel room! If you fancy doing that anyway, I might not recommend this hotel - the western hotel area might be more suitable for that purpouse. To my taste Lido (and onwards) is too far from the centre, 2-5km, and there is a looong uphill on the way back if you walk. Also, Lido feels like the Canary islands, where you can spend your holiday with crowds of other tourists, which I don't fancy very much. But there are different tastes, of course.
If you are looking for a good base in which one can have a good nights sleep and, actively explore the destination, rather than the hotel room, this is an ideal choise!
For a rental car there is very little parking space in the center. The smaller roads are also very narrow and terrain can be very steep - driving is not impossible on the island at all, but perhaps not most suited for the unexperienced "Sunday drivers". It is also more ecological to use busses and organized tours. Anyway, the island tour is a necessity in Madeira, you should not miss it at any case!
Excellent places to visit in Funchal are e.g. Botanical garden, Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro, Monte Palace Tropical gardens, Frederico de Freitas House Museum, Quinta das Cruzes Museum, Sacred Art Museum (if one is interested in the subject). Cruise on Santa Maria ( replica of Columbus' ship) is also wonderful! The best seafood restaurant is O'Jango in the old part of Funchal - try their wonderful seafood rice (arroz de marisco), it's really, really good!
I have recommended hotel Do Centro to my friends and they have been very satisfied with the location and cost/value relation. I will also definitely return here again.
