clean, polite staff, good food and fantastic rooftop terrace.
This is a good quality hotel with childish entertainment programme for the early diners.
The evening begins with silly games i would expect from an all inclusive type resort, prizes includes out of date diaries and notebooks and carrier bags. You have to sit through this to wait to see the better quality entertainment at 9.45 pm.
The hotel is at the top of a steep hill even the coach could not access the hotel via road.
The island is pretty refreshing and safe to walk out in the evenings.

This Hotel is easily the best value for money experience we have ever had. The Thompson Gold status gives exceptionally good Reps, Entertainment team and service. The Hotel is simply excellent. It is four star, it does not try and have every facility, but what it has, is provided well. Beautiful comvenient location for buses. Good area to walk in. Madeira is hilly, but as long as you know of this, and realise this hotel is on an incline, you will find the bus stops are only 50 - 200 meters away, Good views from upper rooms and roof terrace. Evening entertainment standard very good. Food, again, very good. It is true the package deal half board is what gave such exceptional value. If independently buying a room only you would have had to pay a lot for food. But when it is all in as I think all residents seemed to have, it was really good.
Reps permanently in Hotel, and they were very good at their jobs. This hotel seems to get 5 stars on many sectors from most guests, and I am adding more.
Thanks to the management of Thompson and the Hotel for this experience.

Just back from 2 weeks in the Savoy Gardens in Funchal Maderia with Thomsons.
A well run hotel that is clean and tidy with a helpful staff, the food we had was varied and top quality. We liked the themed food every night; this makes sure you don't get the same dishes night after night that we have had in some other hotels. The only way the food side of the hotel could be improved in my opinion is to do "Show Cooking".
This is a Gold hotel with a great entertainments team run by long tall Johnny with Alan, Jan and Emma, all working very hard all days and nights. The shows these guys put on were well worth seeing and the acts sent from the UK were also top quality. For once the rep's were very good and available to help if needed. Local advisors were also on hand, we did a local walk first day with Victor and a short Portuguese language lesson that was fun.
I do wished that the hotel would provide free internet as in this day and age I feel that it’s a must have at any hotel, the charge of 5 Euros per hour is way out of line and for me looks like penny pinching by the management. To improve the day time activates we would have liked things like archery and rifle/pistol shooting in place of the quizzes, some day seemed full of quizzes and events that were of no interest to us.
Weather in December was not very good with rain most days but you can still get around the island and do some very nice levarda walks using the very good bus service on the island, no need to pay for trips that cost far too much.

This is a very clean, well run hotel. We booked last minute and booked a standard room. We were given a very large room, with a sea view on the top floor. There was no balcony(as expected) but we did have sliding doors onto a small step out view point, an unexpected bonus. The views were excellent. We had only one flight of stairs to the terrace with its jacuzzi! One down side is the noise from the aircon unit which made for an annoying hum, if this is going to bother you take earplugs for night time. The location of the hotel is ok if you dont mind walking as it is about 20-30 walk down hill into Funchal itself and slightly longer, uphill on the back. The food was plentiful and reasonable quality but very geared to british tastes. There are themed nights so the food does vary, the salad bar was particularly good. The free safe and fridge were a welcome bonus as was the welcome tray with kettle etc. You can take the Thomson trips but if you dont mind the short trip down to the shopping centre check out Strawberry World trips, almost half the price and no time share sell. Becareful of other cheap offers they usually include some sort of presentation. This is an adult only hotel, but with lot of activities organised by the reps. no pressure to join in but there if you want them.

Thanks to everyone for all your reviews. Savoy Gardens Hotel is a really nice hotel. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Free safe, small fridge, kettle and decent-sized cups were useful in the room. Housekeeping service was unobtrusive and efficient. The buffet selection was varied and plates and food were always hot. The food on the 'Gala' night was also very good.
Our only small gripe was the 5 Euro per hour charge for wifi (which is free in the Dolce Vita Shopping Centre and many other places on the island).

Great hotel, great staff, great food, great weather, very clean and fantastic entertainment!!
What more can be said really? Well we booked last minutes with Thompson and their Reps were great on site and very helpful. The hotel is so friendly and we loved our week and only came back 12th November 2010. The highlight if there had to be one was Jonny and his entertainment team who where the best we have seen especially D&A (singers) who were first class. You wont go wrong booking here at the Savoy Gardens as we couldn't find a negative.
