“Fab November get away”

First time on Madeira and picked this hotel for the "Boutique Style" reference in the blurb. This sums up this hotel really well. It is fairly small - 119 rooms and so felt quite personal. There is a complimentary tea tray on arrival but, they wanted 3 euros per day to refill this - there was fridge however and so we bought milk and tea bags at the local spar and this was not an issue, the same applied to water, first one free charged after that. On the plus side you could order a newspaper for collection from reception each day for 3 euro - most British newspaper titles were available and it was that days paper - to buy yesterdays paper in the local shops was 3.80. Basically their sister hotel would download that days paper and print it out and deliver this to the Savoy Gadens.

Most other people have covered the food and cleanliness etc, just to say this was all excellent. one of the things we liked was no pressure about tips and so you really felt that you were tipping becuase you wanted to. The house wine was excellent and wines were not really pricey on the menu.

The pool area was great - no witing for bed's to be available and the panorama terrace on the roof with the honesty bar was also great. This was a good place to get the last rays of the sun as you saw excellent sun sets from here.

Room Tip: If you are happy to pay the extra then go for a sea view but, mountain view rooms are just as good...

Stayed at the Savoy Gardens at the end of October for one week. The hotel met all our expectations, good food, relaxing pool area and roof terrace with jacuzzi and honesty bar. Hotel public areas and gardens were imaculate and rooms were spacious with the bonus of AC and fridge. The food in restaurant was buffet style with a different theme each night the food was of a high standard. The hotel was on a hill but not a problem a pleasant 30min walk into Funchal downhill and the number 24 bus back stops right outside the hotel. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful as were the thomsons holiday advisers and entertainments team. Overall a fantastic holiday and I would definately stay at this hotel again.

Just spent two weeks at the Savoy Gardens hotel in Funchal and was very pleased with our stay. The hotel is almost exclusively a Thomsons resort, and found it to be excellent with a very good restaurant, lovely pool and a roof terrace jacuzzi. The first week we were there the hotel was branded as a Thomsons Gold hotel but it then changed over after that to become a Thomsons Couples resort. Apart from the branding and slightly worse entertainment it was difficult to see the point of the change or the difference. However, both brands at this hotel meant it was adults only which was great, no ankle biters anywhere. The food was buffet style with a different theme each evening involving three or four different choices and plenty to choose from at breakfast. Thomsons were very good and left us to our own devices but we opted for a couple of their excursions which were only marginally more expensive than other operators, but importantly Thomsons' partners are fully insured. I can recommend the Levada walks but choose carefully, some of them are quite challenging but the guides we had were brilliant and really enhanced the walk with their local knowledge. My only criticism would be that the hotel is a stiff walk (30 mins) from Funchal and it's all downhill which means the return trip is tiring unless you get the No.24 bus back which we did on occasions. Having said that, all of Maderia is a challenge since it's so hilly so be warned. Overall a good stay and would return to Madeira in the future.

Had a lovely holiday this was our first time to Madeira (Funchal). Our Thomson holiday was very good, lovely weather just the right climate not too hot (July). The hotel was very nice kept very clean rooms were very nice we also had a sea view which also looked the pool area.Plenty of daytime activities which was very good.Free sun loungers. The staff who looked after the activities were very friendly and funny and also done the entertainment most nights with additional guests. The food was very good and lots of choices hot and cold.It is very hilly in Funchal but you could catch a bus or taxi and still do some good walking.Plenty sightseeing or just laze around the pool. The only downside to the hotel is around the pool area there is not a lot of room the sun beds are quite near to the pool. This didn't put us off we had a great time met some lovely people and friendly staff especially the entertainment guys and girls.Shame it's not going to be a Thomson gold next year. One good reason we picked the hotel it mentioned in the brochure no children under the age of 18 and that was a bonus. Nothing against kids as we already have 2 (adult ages) but it was peaceful.Would go back again even just to chill and do nothing.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms look over the pool area, also a road runs in front of the hotel which can be busy and...

Had a fabulous holiday thanks to the people we met. Food good but cold, if you complain to the restaurant staff, they just ignore you, so eat the salads they are warm. Bar staff fantastic and after you have walked up the hill to the hotel you will really need a drink but take lots of money its very expensive. You pay extra for everything (tea/coffee making etc in your room, fridge mini bar extra). Reception great got a problem they will sort it.

Room Tip: must have sea view

First time in Madeira & first time for a Thomson's holiday - the hotel was immaculate,
room was excellent with a terrific view; pool area and the jacuzzi very attractive, as was the Palmeira cafe; plenty of daytime activities to keep us occupied if we fancied it - games room and small putting green, boules etc; the staff were so friendly and attentive, everywhere spotlessly clean. The reps were very helpful - nothing too much trouble. Food choice was very good - the downside being it wasn't very hot!

Although the hotel is about a 25 minutes walk from Funchal itself, this didn't spoil our
enjoyment of this beautiful island. Lovely promenade areas to walk and usually we
got a taxi back to the hotel (4-5 euros). Caught a local bus a couple of times and did
one of the 'open-top' sightseeing tours - excellent service.

All-in-all, a most enjoyable holiday and we'd love to go back but I understand the
Savoy Gardens will no longer be a Thomsons Gold hotel after this year? Shame
about that - we had a magical stay there.

Room Tip: We had a first-floor room with balcony overlooking the pool and views out to sea - a little road no...

Just back from lovely Madeira and the Hotel Savoy Gardens. Having selected another Thomson Gold holiday and this time taking with us our 2 grown-up children (well Chris is 18 early next year), we hoped for a great time and I am pleased to say we were not disappointed! The hotel was immaculate with bedrooms well appointed and stylish. The only minor issue was that the beds were not particularly comfortable. The food was the best we have had as a buffet with lots of choice and great flavours. The hotel staff and Thomson holiday advisers were always friendly and helpful, providing excellent service. The pool area was lovely, sun-beds a plenty and comfortable. By joining in with the daytime + evening activities we not only won lots of prizes (towels, bags, a very useful travel wallet (already tried and tested) and a BAFTA!), but we also met some lovely fellow holidaymakers - and in our experience it is the people who make a good holiday. So, saving the best for last, we take our hats off to the Entertaintainments Team: Lauren Jane Harry, Josh Alan Trask, Elisabeth Ruth-Webb, James Harris, Rod the technician and resident entertainer Trev Jones. ALL were excellent, providing both daytime activities a plenty and a fantastic range of music/comedy and professional musical evening shows - which were the highlight of the holiday (Legends of Las Vegas being exceptional). We truly hope that you ALL go on to bigger and better things and we hope to see you in the West End one day. It is a real shame that the Savoy Gardnes will not be a Thomson Gold hotel from here on, as this means we will not be returning. If it had stayed in the Gold collection it would certainly have been on future shortlists!

Room Tip: We had 2 x mountain view rooms which were absolutely fine and saved us quite a bit of money. To get...
