“Great way to see Madeira”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013 via mobile

Alvaro was our guide on the Paradise Valley walk, which is a fairly untaxing short walk. But you'll learn a lot about the culture of the island, it's history and what grows there. More to the point how big or fast it grows. I've been on another much longer walk which in a way is more rewarding, but as a starter or a warm up walk this could be worth doing. Wear layers though, as it can be much colder up in the hills than it is in Funchal or when you step off the plane.

“Levada Velha walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

This walk near Portella is charachteristic of all the mountain irrigation channel walks, something every age group can do from baby carriages to seniors. Well worth the experience of seeing the irrigation channels and the volcanic formations and beautiful trees and flowers. No charge and an easy 3 km roundtrip with a great view at the end before retracing your steps.

“Pretty views with some hair raising moments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We enjoy walking, and the levadas which hug the mountains and hills and transport water to the terraces for the agriculture are a good way to get exercise and see some lovely views. Some do have sheer drops here and there so if it's a guided walk it might be advisable to ask about the likelyhood of vertigo as even some described as easy do have narrow paths and big drops. The guides are all experienced and won't take you to places you wouldn't feel comfortable with. It's a bit difficult to get information for self guided walks. We did a couple on our own, Levada do Bom Sucesso which can be accessed to the right of the cable car station at the top of Monte (To the right as you go up) Some parts interesting and pretty, other parts downright terrifying with little or no path as the sides and long drops so don't look down. By contrast, there is a levada that overlooks Funchal that is easy to get too by walking uphill on Rua Casa Branca towards Rua Unidos Da America. It's not in old Funchal but to the right of the main road that runs past Reid's Hotel. It's an easy walk, and you can look down into gardens and houses and have good views over the newer part of Funchal. Some houses have their entrances off the maintainence path and so we assume that the postman walks the path every day to deliver. You can come off the levada at any time as there are many flights of steps between houses (Some are a bit precarious). We enjoyed the walk-and it's free!

“Taxing but fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

There are levada walks for pretty well everyone, but you must be able bodied. Some go through hand cut tunnels in the hills, our hotel gave us levada walk plans which were invaluable. The views from the walks are super if you are a gardener, walker or just a tourist you will enjoy a levada walk. Beware though some are more strenuous than others, ask before you set off.
