“Quiet tropical garden, service to be improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We stayed 1 week at this hotel for our first stay in Madeira. This was a great starting point to tour the island and go for various hiking trips. The best part was enjoying breakfast every morning on the terrasse in the tropical gardens, with the jasmine smell and the birds' song. The best possible start in a vacation day!
Our room on the 3rd floor was ideally situated with a great view on the garden and the ocean (in the distance). It was very quiet and the bed was comfortable.
The only thing to be improved is the service level, which did not correspond to what you expect from a 5 stars hotel. The gentlemen at the reception often did not really have answers to our questions, there was no concierge service, no real advice on what to do on the island. There were often 3 or 4 people at reception, but you felt that only 1 professional person would be more helpful than 4 "amateurs". For instance, it was the flowers festival, and we did not get any good advice on what to see and when for this special festival. We had to look up ourselves on the internet.
Only 2 staff members deserve a special thank you for their great service: Rubina (reception) and Cristina (restaurant - breakfast). They were really helpful and always smiling!

Room Tip: Choose a Superior room on the 3rd floor and ask for an ocean view.

From the moment we were welcomed through the entrance we knew we had chosen the right hotel for our weeks holiday in Madeira. EVERY member of staff made us feel extremely welcome, were more than helpful and were always cheerful.Nothing was too much trouble for them, from directions to a particular venue on the Island or the preparation of a particular Cocktail.
The food was excellent and delicious whether eating Breakfast on the Terrace, Lunch by the pool set in the midst of Sub-Tropical Gardens, or Dinner in the elegant surroundings of the Restaurant.
The ambience of the Hotel is one of sheer elegance, comfort and relaxation.
A place to return.

We stayed for only a few days, but had a lovely time exploring Funchal and enjoying its hospitality.
The hotel itself was very nice - the service was second to none, the staff were very friendly & professional and the overall experience was excellent.
The Hotel's greatest asset is its location - in a quiet residential area, away from the bustle of down-town Funchal, up in the hills, with lovely views over the town and surrounding area. The historic building and the well-kept botanical gardens are an absolute delight. We particularly enjoyed the late-night walks through the lit-up gardens and swimming in the pool in the mornings.

Sadly, our visit was marred by staying in a room that didn't live up to its expectations (room 203). We had booked a Historical Junior Suite (in the old quinta building) to celebrate a special wedding anniversary and had made enquiries with the hotel a few months in advance, explaining we'd like to stay in a quiet room, if at all possible.

The room itself was beautiful, large, clean, and contained a four poster bed and everything else we needed. Its (small) balcony looked out onto the tiled roof of the breakfast room, so not particularly pretty, but as were outside most of the day, this didn't bother us too much.

The main issue was that this suite is situated directly above what appeared to be the kitchen and servery. On our first morning, we were woken up between 6am-7am by sustained, loud shouting and banging around by hotel staff, directly below us.
On complaining to reception, no other room was available, as the hotel was fully occupied. Instead, we were promised that kitchen staff would be informed and that there would be no repeat of the disturbance. To the hotel's credit, subsequent mornings were much quieter and noise levels were acceptable.
However, the air extract equipment from the kitchen areas makes the floor vibrate (only in the mornings, not late at night). Not much one can do about that, but annoying nonetheless and not what you'd expect in a 5-star hotel, or when paying a premium for the room. In addition, cooking smells penetrated the room in the mornings, possibly because we had opened the balcony doors, which didn't seem an unreasonable thing to do. Again, not a 5-star experience either.

We didn't expect a 'silent hotel', but having specifically enquired about a quiet room and noise levels before booking, and having stated that this was a special anniversary celebration, it was very disappointing that the hotel would have allocated us this room. It detracted from what would otherwise have been a superb experience.

Overall, the old quinta, the beautiful gardens, the nice pool and the excellent breakfasts & lunches made up for the annoyance and disappointment. The Hotel tries very hard, but it has the potential to do even better.
We'd love to stay at QJdL again at some point in the future, but not in room 203.

Room Tip: Room 203 (Historical Jr Suite) is located above the kitchen, so expect noise, vibration and cooking...

An excellent hotel - comfortable, good food and really helpful staff. The gardens were beautiful - it was delightful to wander around admiring the tropical flowers and to see the tortoise and pond with swans and fish. The pool area was so lovely and relaxing and perfect for lunch and /or a swim. We would not hesitate to stay there again when make a return visit to Madeira.

Reasons to book this hotel:
1) The Staff, with capital S
From the maitre d'hotel to the housekeeping all well trained professionals. Eye for detail, genuinely friendly, helpful and efficient
2) The breakfast
If you like to take your time for a long lazy breakfast, enjoying all kinds of fresh fruit, different flavours of bread, croissants, bacon, sausages, beans, eggs cooked a la minute your style, pancakes...whatever...with the opportunity to enjoy this in a magnificent garden... this is the place to be
2) The room
Clean, spacious, all with view on the garden, and on most 2nd and 3rd floor you see the ocean and Funchal. Beautiful wooden floor which of course has a small draw back. You hear footsteps in the room above you. Ask for a room on the 3rd floor if this bothers you, and be gentle to the guests below you. Nice furniture. The entire hotel is decorated with fine furniture and tasteful art which fits in the concept.
3) The garden
One of the main attractions in Funchal is the botanical garden. Why would you go there if you have a superb botanical garden in the hotel compound, included in the price of the room, for the length of your stay?
4) The restaurant.
The restaurant is top notch. They can easily compete with the sub top of Belgian restaurants, and I don't think i am a chauvinist by saying Belgium has very high standards in dining. Some may say it is expensive for Madeiran standards ( 50 to 60€ pp for starter/main course/desert + half a bottle of (good) wine + half a bottle of water). Compared to Belgian standards for comparable quality and setting this is a bargain. We had nice food downtown Funchal for 20 to 30€ pp, but it is what it it is: nice food. The Quinta offers a classy evening out experience, and you do not have to pay for a taxi. I’m not he kind of guy who goes racing through the hills Funchal after (more than) half a bottle of wine.
The setting of the restaurant is top. Beware: a minimum of dress code is required. I have seen a gentleman in bermuda, but after checking it was a Burberry's and his polo was a Ralph Lauren. I have also seen some men with formal jacket and tie, and ladies with flowery evening dresses. You can't overdress, but a tuxedo is over the top :-). This is part of the experience in the restaurant, so don’t spoil it with slippers and a T-shirt with "I love Madeira" on your chest.
5) The apero bar
You really have to enjoy the best Mojito ever, or fine vintage Madeira wines. I'm sure they will not be surprised if you ask a dry Martini, stirred not shaken. Happy hour between 7 and 8. Good lazy jazz music in the background.
6)The pool
Beautiful, large swimming pool in an exotic garden. Very quite, plenty of room, and I have never seen more than 15 people at the side of the pool, and never more than 5 at the same time in the water. Excellent and affordable food and drinks served at the pool bar. No push for consumption. A dream for sun seekers, or just o relax after a day of walking.

Suggestion for improvement.
I would suggest to the hotel management to invest a couple of 100 € in extra WIFI repeaters. The( free) WIFI is erratic because the signal strength is poor (at least in our room) . But then again, my wife would like there was no WIFI at all . So one can’t please everyone.

Room Tip: I expect top floor (3rd floor) rooms have less noise comming from other rooms. Most of the will hav...

Whilst we had only a week at the Quinta Jardins do Logo, it was a perfect one in every way. The hotel is a wonderful old country house set in beautifully maintained sub tropical gardens. A haven for any gardener with many varieties of unusual plants, with wonderful walks to explore. The standard of the hotel is superb and very comfortable. The staff are both charming and helpful beyond the norm which made our stay in Funchal even more enjoyable. And if that was not enough to satisfy the most discerning guest, there is also the excellent and delicious food, both in the bar by the pool but also the imaginative menus of their renouned 'Beresford' restaurant. We cannot wait to return.

Room Tip: All rooms face south but we had a ground floor garden room on the east side which was very peaceful.

Our title says it all! Yet again a lovely week at Jardins do Lago. A great welcome from many familiar members of your staff, who are all so friendly.

Delicious well balanced menus for dinner, we had half board. We had wonderful weather and breakfast in the garden each morning was a delight. It was good to have a daily free mini bus and we appreciated the free wifi! We shall certainly be back, hopefully next year and shall be interested to see the progress on the foreshore.

Room Tip: 208 is a good room with a corner balcony and keeps the sun longer than other rooms we thought.
